My first season and will always be my favourite team. Some great memories. Arsenal away in the cup, beating Derby at home (getting in late as got the wrong train at London Bridge), beating Middlesbrough and Cardiff on Good Friday and the next day I think.
Where did it all go wrong the following season?

    Great memories
  • Too many draws that season. Those Palace games were amazing and how big was our support in all of them. The Arsenal game proved how big our support was, I just remember that the North bank seemed full of Charlton as did the streets outside of Highbury. 32,000 against Derby that season, yeah right??? add 10,000 and that was about it. Was that not the season when we played in red shorts? My favourite season as it was so unexpected.
  • How many of that team now passed away?

    Bob Curtis
    Graham Moore
    Harry Gregory
    Ray Treacy

Remember them all when they were young, fit athletes.

Another time but it doesn't really seem so long ago

    All smokers. ..
  • And all died too young - as did Paul Went
But they were part of a great team - happy days

I think you can add John Keirs to that list.

That whole season was one of the standouts in our history.

Agreed but too many home draws cost us promotion
from memory i think we drew 3 in a row at home
  • Those were the days. Great team. Was only 8 at the time but remember that we stood down at the front on the Terrace that is now the Sainsbury end for that match.

Always remember the Palace games from those days where the Covered End boys would go into the Holmesdale End. Have a scrap and get marched around the side of the pitch.

    Didn't know that

    RIP John

We did indeed: against Villa, Carlisle and Palace in February and March 1969: each 1-1. Attendance at The Valley against Palace was 32,768. After finishing third that season and just missing promotion, we finished third-from-bottom in the next two seasons, before being relegated in 1972.

Most of the time, we stayed in the Holmesdale ... there were always far too many of us. It’s the Palaaarse lot who disappeared.

Was going to say that, whenever we went on the half a mud tip that was the holmesdale we stayed there. In 68/69 both games there were thousands of Charlton on the Holmesdale

If i remember rightly, we started walking from Charlton village then jumped on a 75.
Yep, i can remember upstairs trying to rock the bus.

    Bloody hooligan
  • I was there, 2000 herberts marched from the Valley. reported in the Kentish Independent with a picture on the front page with a very young me in the middle. Unfortunately lost the paper many years ago. Initially we went in what is now the sainsbury end but saw pushing & shoving going on at the Holmesdale so everyone ran around. (the arthur waite had yet to be built) Strangely palarse disappeared, now there's a suprise  2-0 up, 3-2 down & I think Harry Gregory hit the bar with a penalty but possibly scored the equalizer with another pen. Happy days

    Brilliant Fella!

My first game was against spurs in the seventities when we beat them at the Valley and I was hooked with the covered end and the Arsenal game in 69 sounds amazing as older chaps confirmed to me on future away games. Respect.

    Indeed....i was 12.
  • Played cricket with Steve Kember a couple of weeks ago. He still works for Palace part-time as a scout. He was asking whether we'd sold Patrick Bauer and how Dan Bowry was getting on (Steve taught him at Whitgift School).

It's a shame very few of these old Palace v Charlton games are on video. I've seen the one from the early 80's at Selhurst where Derek Hales misses the open goal from about 7 yards after a brilliant run by Martin Robinson but that's about it.

The first one I went to was the Easter Monday home game in 1982-83 season; we won 2-1 in front of less than 8,000.

Was that the game Terry Brisley scored?
  • Carl Harris and Steve White in the 2-1 win. Ally Brown (ex-West Brom) for Palace.

Ian Walsh two goals in the 2-0 defeat on The Big Match.

I was there. I'm always there. But I don't remember it.
  • The Easter game was really important (despite the low crowd). We'd just been tanked in our previous four games (I'm getting help from the Colin Cameron book here!)

    Blackburn away 0-2
    Leeds home 0-1
    QPR away 1-5
    Middlesbrough away 0-3

Palace were fellow relegation rivals but we both did enough in the closing weeks to scrape by in the final match of the season (I remember this bit....I was at both games)

    Charlton 4 Bolton 1
    Palace 1 Burnley 0

Mentioned this before. Am I the only person who bought and still has the video of that Bolton game?

That Palace 1-0 against Burnley, didn’t they get some ridiculously huge crowd of over 50,000 or am I dreaming?

Yes they did, a few of us tried to go... to support Burnley but could not get in.

Also, law of averages says we’ve been to more legendary games...and if you were lucky to have been around in 1968/69 then there probably hasn’t been a better season for stories...fuck, just realised that was also the first season I had a season ticket...
