Jack Penate - Another famous Addick

Ive just found out from my old man that Jack sits in the North Upper G Block. My old man has known his Dad for years and I knew him as a littl'un!! Good on ya Jack (even though youve now got a stage surname!!!)

For those of Ben's generation, Jack Penate sings Popular music and currently has a single and album in the Hit Parade

I've been following Jack for about a year now. He's actualy a bloody lovely guy as well. Always makes a point of saying hello when he sees me. I was taking photos at SXSW in Texas in March and went to see him play in this tiny little bar. It was kind of weird travelling to the other side of the world to see a musician who was born about 5 minutes from where I live.

    I took this photo too

I know he was a poet, but IMHO not a very good one, his novels however are a different story Gormenghast has got to be one of the greatest stories in English Literature and was very well adapted by the BBC a few years ago. I will however always love Mervyn for his illustration work, along with Roland Hilder and Colin Speed took illustration to a whole new place in the 40's and 50's.

As for his Grandson - don't know -don't care but hey at least I got to post on a music thread :)

Tried to read the triology but could never get into it. Perhaps my dislike for anything that might be slightly like Lord of the Rings put me off. I know a lot of people love the Gormenghast books.

You should try again Henry, absolutely nothing to like LOTR. Gormenghast is more of a social satire examining mores and codes of behaviour and is still relevant today. If it's available on DVD try to see the BBC's dramatisation, - visually it's stunning and the qulaity of the acting is out of this world.

It was along time ago in my youth. Always followed Borges's advice of if you're not enjoying a book just stop reading it.

I should try Dickens again as well. Could never get to grips with him or all those depressing Russian writers.
