  • Was this game played in black and white ? :-)
  • I was there with a schoolmate who supported QPR. A great day in a poor season. Not sure why we were so bad at that time, because we had some fine players -- Curtis, Went, Reeves, Peacock for a start -- though I thought Kenning was largely a spent force during his second spell at the club. Peter Reeves was an excellent defender, who marked the mighty Rodney Marsh out of many a game. I seem to remember that he had the curious distinction of scoring only in the first and last of his many games for us. Can this be right? I do know that we missed him terribly when we lost him to injury. I'd forgotten that Marsh hadn't played in this one. Had he moved on by then? I hadn't thought so.

Yes. Colours were invented in 1973.
  • As said before..........
    My 1st Away match.
    I was 8.........

    Call yourself oldish? Huh!
  • [cite]Posted By: Ru1986[/cite]Venables i never knew he played for QPR.

    I bet there's a lot you never knew ..........

(Sorry, Rupert ..... bit harsh, but I couldn't resist!)

    ;o)
  • my first ever away game was with my old man. I think we lost our next game at home 4 v 2 --- a long long long long list of corners which we never did actually turn.

This could also be the season we drew 2 v 2 at home to Millwall where kenning scored 2 screamers but the report in the national press said " a great game spiled by continued crowd trouble on all 4 sides of the ground".
  • [cite]Posted By: Goonerhater[/cite]" a great game spoiled by continued crowd trouble on all 4 sides of the ground".

I wonder if this had anything to do with the fact that you could walk right the way round the ground? :-)

I liked Reeves he always gave you 100% effort, but He didn't always get the better of Marsh. I remember him marking Marsh man to man for one of our home games but eventually Marsh undone us and gave a class performane (couldn't stand the bloke, still don't) the Rooodneey Rooodneey echoing round the Valley still rankles me after all these years.
  • "Rodney is a fairy", was our riposte. What masters of wit and repartee we are.

I remember that! He didn't like it either as i recall
  • i still think its the main reason he hates us to this day.

mind you he was a class above us in that 3 v 2 cup win for QPR at The Valley

We were 2-0 up in that game and two superb finishes from the Fairy drew them level by half time, Bridges finished us off in the second half....
  • Was that Barry Bridges, who I remember seeing playing for Birmingingham, Chelea and Millwall?
  • yes and it was Roddddddddneyyyyyyyyyyyy who walked past most of our team to set the goal up for him.
  • Colours that day red and black stripes or was it green and black.Loftus Road always a good place to visit due to this result, and you could get in the home end which was a bit cheaper than the away end,and get an escort around the pitch by the MET.Had a mate who i played football with ,QPR man who would always look out for me being escorted around the pitch.HAPPY DAYS...............

It was red & black stripes, Lewises, I'm pretty sure........ If I close my eyes and think, I've got a hazy memory it was the same as Man City's away kit that year.

    Found this on Ebay......
  • [cite]Oggy Red[/cite]Other names younger fans might not be familiar with - Denis Bond, a fair haired lightweight ex Spurs reserve, who pottered around midfield without ever doing anything wrong but never really doing anything at all
    .

My memories are a bit shot Oggy; but as I recall Denis Bond was anything but lightweight.
I remember him as a past-it Spurs reject who was overweight and had a beer gut that didn't belong on any sportsman.

I'm loving all this reminiscing though.
I just wish I still had the photographic memory that I used to possess.
Some of the detail you guys come up with has disappeared down the drain of age for me and it's great to be reminded and I can smile and think, oh yeah I remember now.
Wasn't at that QPR game though!

  • My mind is a bit hazy about this. I think when we signed Denis Bond we also signed about 5 or 6 other players. I remember walking to London Bridge station after work and we were the sport back page headline in the Evening paper because of the mass signings (all small fry of course). There were small face photos lined at the top.

Does anyone else remember this and who all the other players were?
  • Talking earlier of Peter Reeves I watched the West Ham v Preston F.A. Cup Final at his Mum's with his little brother Anthony who was one of my Primary School mates at the time. Wendover Road just off the Rochester Way if I remember. Coincidentally Richie Bowman and Mark Penfold we were all mates around that time and played for the same Primary School school team. Richie was a year younger but his Dad used to take us to games in in his comber van but unfortunately died when Richie was still a kid. I think Richie was living in Willcrooks Gardens and Mark Penfold was around there too b ut I can't remember the street. Everybody went to Ealdham Square Junior School.
All same type players ...good honest players who gave blood, sweat and tears for the club.

I was very good mates with Tony 'Tiger' Reeves, he went to Bloomfield as did Mark Penfold who was a year younger than us. Tony played for Penhill Standard for years, he was quite a good player but never wanted to emulate his brother, Peter. I remember the day Penfold turned up at the Valley with his brand new curly perm, he didn't half get some stick for it...

As our 4th goal went in the QPR guy next to me ask me why I still looked worried ! Nothing changes !!
  • I know what you mean, Hex.
4-0 up with just a few minutes left on the clock.

We're Charlton, we've seen it all before ......and learned to take nothing for granted!
  • Yep, I remember this one. Strangely, I can remember the scorers but not much about the goals. I have a feeling of Mike Kenning's was a fluke. Graham Moore was great to watch in the side in that period.
  • Sadly not repeated last weekend.

Isn't this the match where many of us walked from Charlton to Loftus Road? Can't remember why we did it but many a 'nawty' event took place along the way...

yes it was but i'm sure the novelty wore off for some at new cross and we got the tube. My first away game with mates instead of my dad i think.

  • What a small world I also went to Ealdham Square school and played football with Mark and Richie and knew Tony 'Tiger' Reeves. Mark lived in Kingsholm Gardens off Shawbrooke Road. I sat behind him and his brother Lee at the Blackpool home game recently. Incidently Ealdham produced another old Charlton player in mid/late 50's by the name of Cyril Hammond who lived in edgworth road. There were a lot of good footballers around the area at that time. Phil Waghorn played alongside Mick Flanagan for the reserves around 1972. Do you remember Steve and Les Beauchamp from Briset Road.
