What is the biggest game you have missed.....

edited January 2008 in General Charlton
and for what reason, and how did you follow the game / find out the score ??

Me- Probably the West Ham game last season. Not just a crucial relegation battle, but a unique occassion with the connections of the two managers. Plus we smashed them.

Was on a stag do in Barcelona, found a bar with three tellies, two showing Liverpool and the other one the Charlton game. Everyone else was following the Liverpool tellies, and kept getting the shock of their lives everytime i went mental. Gutted to have not been there, but just grateful i could follow it, it went on to lead to something like a 14-hour booze bender !

  • First game back at The Valley, I was only 10 and that was the season that I started to going. Not overly into football but my old man made it quite clear to me how important it was and i still remember his face to this day...

Villa away in our first Prem season - remember not being able to go up there for one reason or another but was sitting in the kitchen watching final score with tears in my eyes and then Danny Mills banged in the free kick and it popped up on the screen. I jumped up, headbutted the glass lampshade thing and it fell down and smashed but did i care?!
  • The Leeds away game at St Andrews. I used to go to games on my own, and really couldnt do that one. Was listening on the radio and remember running up and down the street when Shirts scored the second ...

Not necessarily the "biggest", but the one I most regret - the 4-2 Boxing Day win over Chelsea in 2003. I was halfway through my rather extended stay at the NHS's pleasure and I never got to see the highlights on MOTD either!
  • What is the definition of the biiggest game, the team you play or what is at stake regardless which team it is, but the answer is simple, none
  • Ipswich at home play-off game. I was on honeymoon in Thailand. Had to wait until the next day to get news of the result. I had watched the first leg on the box in the middle of the night from the hotel room (I always was a romantic) but they showed the Sunderland v Sheff U game the night of the 2nd legs.
  • gotta say i can't remeber any really big games i have missed in last 20 years although if we make the play off final,I won't be there and it will break my heart

I didn't go that that one either. Went to the game at Elland Road and afterwards got whacked round the head with a piece of wood, chased up the road and my mate had his car windows put in. To be honest, I was shit scared to go and face that lot again.
  • I missed the play off final....as documented on another thread of this nature.....listened to it on the radio from a beach near St Malo....went bonkers when we scored and got some really strange looks from the frogs......I flew back the next day for the Town Hall celebrations at Woolwich.
  • Leeds play off game at St Andrews, i was flying out to Corfu that evening and kept phoning my mum to find out the score, when i found out the result i remember running through the departure lounge jumping over chairs screaming YES! and being asked if i had drunk any alcohol and replying that i hadn't but intended to so BIG TIME!

  • pay off game at St Andrews was first class I was only 16,just remember Leeds fans trying to smash emergency exit gate to get on the pitch at get at us (1500).Shat myself when old bill said no police escort to the station and told us we had better start running.Just remember the Birmingham Zulu's comin out of boozers telling us to go home as they were having Leeds that night,I wasn't going to argue with them.
  • It's still to come but it may well be this years play off final. I booked my holiday so that I was back for the 26th May (Bank holiday Monday) only to find that the Championship play off is on Saturday 24th. We'll just have to gat an automatic promotion place so I won't be dissapointed.
  • absolutely fantastic game....Watford Gap services on the way home at 2am didn't know what had hit them with all the singing and dancing !!!!

Can't remember a 'big' game I've missed since I've been going....the one I most regret not going to was the 4-2 win at Highbury, spent that day in the pub laughing at Gooner mates..
  • Got chucked out of play off final after 15 mins (see earlier thread) and was at stag do for the 4-3 Villa away game and cousins 40th for west ham last season.
  • Wembley 98...

You must've done something really bad in a past life to deserve missing out on those 3.

I think that is the one I'm most gutted about. Was especially gutted when I found out that one of my mates had had a spare ticket in the away end and had taken his mum cos she liked Henry!!!!

No but know of him, used to go everywhere, not as many away as i would like but when iit comes to the big ones, never miss it, even if it means the good lady doesnt speak to me for a fortnight
  • The first promotion game at Carlisle.

Ticket and travel arranged, lashed up the night before, felt really rough getting up at about 6am to leave and my sister told me the game had been postponed. At that time in the morning I accept everything that is told to me, so went back to bed to wake up at about 11am.

The 2nd promotion game made up for it. Jim Tolmey's own goal was just wonderful!
  • Dont think I have ever missed a big game but do regret not going to Chelsea for the 1-0 Super Kev win as was on the office xmas party.

And the Man Utd game where we won 1-0, didnt go to all the away games in those days.

Speak to Laura, she's organising it!!
  • only game I've missed where I wished I hadn't is the 1-0 win at Old Trafford. Was thinking of not going to the Play Off Replay v Leeds at St Andrews but bloody glad I did, although I did leave pretty sharpish at the end !!

A lion - that's pretty big, i'm sure you'd agree. I followed him on foot but stepped on a twig and the bastard ran off.
  • 1-0 at Old Trafford was brilliant.....even though I was in with the Mancs!

So nearer to Stuarts goal than the rest of us then.
