74/75 season. We're both chasing promotion. They needed to beat Gillingham in their second to last match to stay in the race. They won 4-0. I remember reading in the Mercury about the jubilant scenes suddenly silenced by the tannoy announcement that we'd beaten Preston 3-1 guaranteeing us the promotion spot. I almost wish I was at Selhurst and not the Valley that night.
It's amusing that the "oldest club" in English football had to fabricate the saddest rivalry in football with a club absolutely miles away, because no one else really gave a shit about them.
At least it’s reciprocated - we’re the opposite of Millwall “no one hates us”!
I've seen hatred consume people. Not worth it. No good for mental health. I've mellowed a bit with age I suppose, life's experiences having altered my perspectives bit. F***ing hate Brentford though 🤣

I've spent a good proportion of the last few years hating us
Shit stadium in a shit area of Surrey, obnoxious plastic fans, stupid kit, London wannabees, ultra bollocks, took us to the cleaners when playing there, biggest rivals are the thick end of 50 miles away. South London my arse. Oldest club bollocks as well - what the f*ck has the Crystal Palace Company works team got to do the the Palace of today? The Royal Arsenal was founded in the sixteenth century - I wonder if they had a works team?
Millwall are rivals based on geography and we live with their fans in our everday lives, and within our families and friends (my wife's family are all Millwall but that will be replicated throughout many families in pwoppa south London). I always want Millwall to lose (unless playing Palace) but I don't really hate them.
I truly hate everything about the stripey c*nts.
That enough for you, Jimmy?
I always imagined you as a mild mannered, placid man
It's a thing and it's because they are not "us". It has a name; it is called Blason Populaire. I've posted it before but this paper is actually a good read. https://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/id/eprint/12799/1/489131.pdf You'll see that CAFC is one of the clubs that gets a mention for facilitating the research. Also the paper expresses the opinion that "political correctness" is the enemy of blason populaire and might lead to it dying out. I suspect some might think that is a good thing.

A rivalry so pathetic and bizarre that their own official website had to explain it......
Whether you hate them or not,I wish our club had been run as well as theirs over the last few years.
Define 'the last few years'. Do you mean since the last time they went into administration, wiped the slate clean and knocked all their creditors? Or since the first time they went into administration, wiped the slate clean and knocked all their creditors?
Fucking stripey Nigel c***s.
Dont know the dates when they went into admin, but if Southall and his mates had been allowed to carry on,we would most certainly have been in the same boat.If the law of the land allows companies to go skint, and then start up again, then you will get people jump on the band wagon.i used to work for a fruit importer, and lost count of the times one of our customers declared bankruptcy and a few days later there they were ,same people new company.Palace have established themselves in the premiership, that is a fact,we have gone from disaster to disaster, that is a fact, and luckily we now at last seem to be building something.I dont like Palace, never have done, and hated playing there for all those years,I long for the day when we can put Millwall and Palace in their place.

My Dad asked me at the dinner table last night why I dislike Palace so much. I realise now he must have been speaking to @jimmymelrose earlier that day. I think @bobmunro has summed it up for me very nicely.
Give me a black clad choir boy over a wanna be hard man thug , still no one can out Cnut The scum in these matters Palace 9.8 miles away and takes forever , scum 4.4 miles away … a genuine local rivalry West Ham and Orient are nearer than your Brighton mates .

Nice one. 307 pages not doable but read intro and conclusion. Am fully signed up PC/woke brigade, but I can't help but get involved with a good bit of Blason Populaire.... which has always fascinated me. Never knew there was a word for it - or studies. Good stuff. Cheers

my keyboard is sticking sorry about this, however my point is ,that while I share the dislike of our friends from Croydon,I cant help feeling envious of their position compared to our dire last five years in this division, while they appear to be getting stronger,(cup semi final)

That makes me hate them even more.
On the envy side - there is absolutely nothing about those arseholes to be envious about.

Palace have always struck me as a club in search of an identity. In my youth, their nickname was the Glaziers. A shit nickname but one with some relevance to the club name. A rebrand has led to them now being known as the Eagles. Why? I’ve never noticed the skies of Croydon being darkened by hordes of birds of prey.
They have also changed their club colours multiple times. From claret and blue, to all white, back to claret and blue and then finally ending their current ghastly blue and red. Why? Because they wanted to have the strip as Barcelona!
If they ever change or redevelop their ground, you just know they would rebrand it as the “ Stadium of Wonders”, or some other such shite!
Really worried about their FA cup run. Villa on the face of it is tough game but with Villa's champions league campaign I think they may well be very undercooked. Praying they do the business and knock Sainsbury's Superstore FC out.

You know whats going to happen, as sure as eggs are eggs they will beat Villa.
I've been hating them since the night we beat them 1-0 at the Valley way back in the mid seventies, when we went up that season and they didn't. Malcom Alison and his big mouth, a third division manager that the press loved a quote from no matter how ridiculous. Ron Nodes is another reason to hate them, he sucked the blood out of our corpse of a club.

Didn't that reason die with him in 2013, or do you think his ghost is still haunting us?
The way I see it, it's no skin of my nose if they win the thing, so I'm not worried about it, but I'd rather they didn't, even though my nephews live in deep in Palace territory. Both Gooners 🤣

They demolished Villa 4-1 only a month ago and even drew 2-2 with them when Palace were shit earlier in the season. They have won 11 of their last 14 games I think.
A wide Wembley pitch will likely play into their hands too.
I make Palace favourites but hope they play badly and get spanked.

They just don't allow any other fanbase a chance.

Thankfully United equalised and then went on to win it.

Mind you, I do struggle to eat a whole one in one sitting these days.
