Message to my fellow Charlton fans

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
Theres one thing I wanna know:
Whats so funny bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
Whats so funny bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

cause each time I feel it slippin away, just makes me wanna cry.
Whats so funny bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
Whats so funny bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

cause each time I feel it slippin away, just makes me wanna cry.
Whats so funny bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
Whats so funny bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
Whats so funny bout peace love & understanding?

N. Lowe.

Nick Lowe is the Bard of Brentford and a truely great musician and songwriter. Wrote these song lyrics while with Brinsley Schwarz circa 1975 (best decade for music)

Had hit with Cruel to be Kind as well as producing a lot of albums for Stiff Records such as Elvis Costello.

Worth checking out Basher - Best of Nick Lowe. His latest At My age is just a great album of mellow songs reflecting on age and getting on.

Don McLean does it for me

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
    `cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
    The day the music died?

    We started singing,
    "bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

You stick to your Led Zepp nonsense and leave Joni alone. Anyone who can ryme "Take all the trees put them in a tree Museum" with "Charge the people a doller and half just to See 'em" is a genius.

Endless fun working out what the lyrics mean.

Helter Skelter is about the Beatles and the Manson family.
the Bird is the Byrds Eight Miles high
and Dylan is the Jester in a cast - after his motorbike accident.

Don McLean - any one who can write the following is a genius to me:

    ============================

    Starry starry night
paint your palette blue and grey
look out on a summer's day
with eyes that know the darkness in my soul.

    Shadows on the hills
sketch the trees and the daffodils
catch the breeze and the winter chills
in colors on the snowy linen land.

And now I understand what you tried to say to me
how you suffered for your sanity
how you tried to set them free.
    They would not listen
    they did not know how
    perhaps they'll listen now.

    Starry starry night
    flaming flowers that brightly blaze
swirling clouds in violet haze reflect in
    Vincent's eyes of China blue.

    Colors changing hue
    morning fields of amber grain
    weathered faces lined in pain
are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

And now I understand what you tried to say to me
how you suffered for your sanity
how you tried to set them free.
    perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you
but still your love was true

and when no hope was left in sight on that starry starry night.
    You took your life as lovers often do;
But I could have told you Vincent
    this world was never
meant for one as beautiful as you.

    Starry starry night
    portraits hung in empty halls
    frameless heads on nameless walls
with eyes that watch the world and can't forget.

Like the stranger that you've met
the ragged men in ragged clothes
the silver thorn of bloody rose
lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

And now I think I know what you tried to say to me
how you suffered for your sanity
how you tried to set them free.
    They would not listen
    they're not list'ning still
    perhaps they never will.

    =======================

Makes me cry everytime I read/hear it.

Agree, very moving. Playing it now on my iTunes.

Anyone heard the new Billy Bragg Album Mr Love & Justice. Back to his best. I know a lot of people think of Billy Bragg as a shouty protest singer but he writes some of the most moving songs ie Levi stubbs tears and some great love songs. I also like the "15 fame filled minutes of the fanzine writher" line from Great Leap Forward.

My hands were all a quiver
I slowly removed her suspender belt
and her leg fell in the river
