  • I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the England World Cup squad . He’s liable to do something really stupid at a crucial time . Having said that he’s a better player than Henderson and he still keeps getting in the team.

So you wouldn't have taken Rooney in 2006?

    Or Beckham in '98?

    Or Wilkins in '86?

Shelvey will go alright. There's been a lot of canvassing for him in the press in the past two months - and rightly so.

Yes because Shelvey is as important to England as Rooney , Wilkins and Beckham were!

    My view too.

Not sure about the Rooney and Beckham comparison. Both far better players than Shelvey and prior to 98 Beckham had never had a professional red card and whilst Rooney was short fused his league disciplinary record is better than Shelvey's despite being 6 years older.
  • Precisely. Any England player can be sent off at the whim of the referee.

Indeed, there are a few I can think of that should have been for all the good they were doing on the pitch.
  • Shelvey has only had four yellow cards all season. He seems to have consciously eliminated that side of his game. He's a massive upgrade on sideways Henderson.

Would Henderson get in the England side if he was playing for Brighton or Huddersfield instead of Liverpool?

    I very much doubt it.

Even worse, he's actually been the bloody England captain!

He’s has two red cards this season.

He’s also only had 2 assists and 1 goal in 27 appearances this season.

Not wanting to make him out as a terrible player because he’s a good PL midfielder but I can’t work out where the Shelvey love-in has suddenly come from in the media.
  • Better passer than Alli or Lallana? Do me a favour.

He's a boom/bust player. 75% of the time he's an average footballer but people only look at the highlight reels.

Give him a squad place in the friendliest and see if he impresses. He's by no means a shoe in and if he did make the squad it would only be as an option off the bench.
  • I've always thought shelvey under the right manager would be half decent Prem player. Maybe Benitez is that manager.
Would I take him to the WC? Based on the last squad, yes I would as he adds more then Jack Livermore!!!!

Has bang average Strikers in front of him...

How many key passes has he made that have been wasted, I'd be more interested in that stat

The squad is named before the friendlies.

Final list wont have to be till 4th June so he could be part of a 35 man squad for Nigeria yet will have to be reduced to 23 players by Costa Rica on the 7th June

Over 30-40 yards then Yes imo. Did you see the pass he made for Newcastle's first goal v Arsenal ? He should go to Russia in the summer as he gives something different - a long ball over the top for Vardy or Sterling rather than a lot of tippy-tappy stuff which will get snuffed out.

Hoof ball specialist is what I'm hearing on here. Charlton through and through...

    Agree.

    Agree
  • Shelvey is a considerably bigger talent than anything else England have in his position but he is also a potentially much bigger liability. Such a shame.
  • 3/1 to make the squad
  • I've no idea what Jake Livermore has done to be even called up in the first place

No youth appearances for England (and being at Spurs you stand a better chance of being called up) and then played for 2 mediocre Premier League clubs without doing anything outstanding
  • I hope he makes it
  • I don't think he will make the squad but I think he should. The best English passer by some distance. Also, he's capable of passing more than 10 yards, right onto a striker's toe.

I don't think he'll make it though because England play a short passing game and he doesn't fit that style. Also, his temperament is questionable, especially after stamping on Dele Alli. Shame because Shelvey would find Vardy several times a game. Southgate doesn't seem to want that direct an option.
  • I don’t think Shelvey should go to the World Cup.

Unless we want to win it.
  • No highlight reel analysis from me. I would select Shelvey every time. His ball and player awareness are without parallel in the English set up. He knows almost exactly where he is going to put the ball as it leaves the foot/ head of the player passing to him or picking up a stray ball. It is instinctive. It is immediate.

Such play gives the receiving player more time, more space, more momentum. Invariably at Newcastle someone will cock it up. At an international level such time must make a difference.

The number of simple instant one touch lay offs and passes over 5, 10, 15 yards are without parallel, nearly all perfectly in stride, at the right height and pace.

He is the chess player with the ball because beyond the above he has the vision to see how to stretch the game and then the ability to deliver the 20, 30, 40 yard bombshell.

Just look at the targets he has had to work with at Newcastle. No disrespect to Gayle, Perez etc., but with targets like Kane, Ali, Vardy, Rashford, Lingard he can offer so much more than offerred elsewhere.

He will take risks, he will make mistakes but he will win you games. We need to approach these tournamounts without fear.

Is he a risk in terms of his defensive loss of concentration and his temperament? Without a doubt but if he has modified his approach then you can mitigate the other.

He has to be in the next squad. It has to be about options, options, options. It has to be about creating different challenges for the opposition. Far too often even the most mundane sides are able challenge us because we are one dimensional.

I am not going to disrespect any player but in international terms several can be seen as no more than talented water carriers.

We have too many "butterfly" players, they add value but play in front of and do not hurt the opposition.

    Shelvey can offer more.

Grapevine the great has spoken. His decision is final.

    ;)

Seriously though I agree completely agree
