Charlton Players You Were

edited July 2008 in General Charlton
completely wrong about:

Mine has to be Richard Rufus. I remember watching a Kent senior Cup match at Margate and both Linvoy Primus and Richard Rufus were playing. Margate had a striker called Joe Brayne who gave Rufus a torrid time and I famously remarked to my brother that that lad (Rufus) is unlikely to make it if he can't cope with Joe Brayne. Primus on the other hand was a real handful for the Margate lads and really looked the part.

Shortly after that match Curbs released Primus and kept Rufus and I questioned the wisdom of that decision to whoever would listen.

The rest is history....

Johnny Robinson - truly useless for the first two seasons of his time at Charlton.

parker.just too lightweight and was knocked off the ball too easy.i could not see the point in persisting with him and that i would be cheering us on knowing that i expected us to lose.then he went on loan to norwich and a bit later we got his twin brother back who was the real deal.

...more like his last two BFR.

My contribution would be Sweaty Balmer. Wasn't it two own goals in his first two matches or something but went on to become a favourite of mine.

Ralph Milne, he was worse than I thought!

    not charlton but;
i remember a few years ago watching man utd's youth team and thinking they would all make the step up to a professional first team apart from the lightweight flash show-pony wearing no. 7, who'd end up at stalybridge celtic reserves.

    step forward david beckham.

Stuart Balmer.....had a mare of a debut , one of the worst own goals ever and had didnt improve much in a few games after that.

    But a hero eventually.

Mark Aizlewood was poo when he first joined us - but can still see the look in his eyes when he collected the ball a long way out and scored a beauty at Brunton Park.
  • Options
Paul Bacon - had a pretty good 45 mins in a game a upton park (won a few 50/50's made a few passes)
and I thought we'd uncovered the next "midfield general" .....

Yes but to be fair he was replacing Rob Lee so people probably expected loads too much from him.

I seem to remember he got injured within 30 mins of his debut in one of those stupid Anglo Italian cup games.

Charlie MacDonald - i thought he was going to be a star.

    Di Canio

Thought he was past it and came to us for an end of carear pay day. Thought he was execellent the season we had him.

Redfern, really though him joining us would give us more than we already had. In the end he gave less and with hindsight we should have stuck with Keith Jones.

    OH PLEASE EVERYONE

    DENNIS ROMMEDAHL.

I still thought he was quality because at times he could be unplayable which was about once a season BUT always threatened to do it more.

    Great enigma of a player

Kevin Lisbie - Used to get hammered on Charlton Live, sticking up for him.

    Joe Mclaughlin

Had a blinder in his first match, thought he was going to be the rock to build the team on.

The rock turned into a pebble!

The moment we sold Colin Pates to Aresnal, Joe McLaughlin went down hill.

JM came to us with personal problems, his kid had died, wanted a fresh start away from chelsea - at least thats what some bloke told me at the time.

1)Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink. I thought alongside Benty, we'd have a strikeforce to trouble most defences.Major dissapointment.

    2) Dennis Rommedahl. Always looked capable of doing something special, but very rarely did.

Sweaty Balmer for me. Vividly remember watching his first game and thinking oh fcuk, what a pony, but was well pleased to see him turn it around and turn into a bit of a hero as 'Robert McCall' says above.

Dennis has got to be the biggest disappointment ever for me. It sounds totally ridiculous now, but when we signed him I took it as a sign that we had made it as a club. From then on we'd have a world beating team, only ever sign the highest quality players, and would need the urgent assistance of a firm of specialist cabinet makers. As we all know now though, DR just didn't fit in, never fulfilled his potential with us and the cabinet makers are still out of work.

Lloyd Sam, never shown any sign of making it, yet when we first saw him thought he would.

    Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

Watched him as a kid and remember telling everyone, including the Carlton Live radio audience, that we had unearthed an absolute gem.

    DOH!!!!!

As for Charlie Macdonlad, I still think he is the most natural goal scorer I have seen since Killer or Super Clive. The trouble is he is a very old fashioned style of Centre Forward in that he is a poacher and there are not many top sides, if any that can afford just to have a poacher in the team that contributes little else.

Simon Webster was well dodgy on his debut (on loan), we signed him the following week and a few of us thought Lawrence had lost his marbles. Of course, he turned out to be a legend.

Before Parker went to Norwich on loan, he played in a league cup game was total pony. I remember walking out of the Valley and we all agreed he had had long enough and would never make it. Whatever they did at Carrow road really worked, that day at Maine Road he came out like a tiger and never looked back.

Remember when we signed him, that Ladbrokes were doing odds on first premiership player of the month and sticking a fiver on him at 33/1
If only he would kick the ball past the left back and run after it, rather than dribbling the ball straight into them.
Mind you - he was good in the air...

Charlie McDonald just been released by Southend.

Very similar to Paul Gorman in the early 90's, needed that extra 2 yards of pace to make it at league level.

    Bad ones
Paul Gorman - I thought he would bang in loads
Peter Garland - I thought he was going to be a massive star - turned out to just be massive
Neil Redfearn - I thought he'd be perfect. Turned out to be a waste of space in the midfield.
Kenny Achampong - Typical 80's + 90's style "tricky winger" who excited me. Turns out "tricky" translated to "god-awful"

    Good ones
Thought Parker was weak to start with. He turned out OK
Thought Robinson was pants to start. Not a bad player
    thought Garry Nelson was past-it
Thought Alan Kernaghan was a donkey at first
  • Options
Dennis Rommedahl - thought he'd be a world beater
Amdy Faye - Thought he was the Midfielder we'd missed
JFH - Scored goals wherever we went...until us.
Mendonca - I thought he was useless when we signed him :-)

For me the comment i made about Spotty Parker and the fact that i thought he would never make a player has come back to haunt me for the last few years

I was right in the end though

    Wasnt I???

Steve Thompson was a very slow and lumbering centre half when lennie first got him but improved over time and became pretty good in the old first division.

I can't understand how people thought that Parker would never make it. From what I can remember he was making his debut as a 16YO, was plainly underweight and lacking strength, and playing in midfield those things showed up but I could see that he had a good touch, read the game reasonably well and knew what he was doing, just that he was a year or two away from where he needed to be physique wise.
