Like others I loved Reidy because he felt like he was 'one of us' and showed passion , for example the way he celebrated the win at Selhurst and socialised with fans watching the Gaelic Games the following day means he has a special place in our hearts. I genuinely believe he loved Charlton and was grateful that we put his career back on track.

However , I know Football is a business and I have no doubt he would want to move on for more money .

I think the other thing to remember was that Reidy was injured at the time we sold him .For an overweight injury prone player , the fact we virtually doubled our money on him which I'm afraid makes it good business. Not bad for a Dowie signing. Had he been fully fit I may have taken a different view.

Our problem is we did not properly replace him . At the time I'm sure Johnny Jackson would have been available from Colchester for a fraction of what we received for Andy Reid and probably less than Lee Cook's wages. I remember being very impressed with Jacko when Colchester beat us that season on New Year's Day and had followed his progress since his Spurs days .

Since Jacko has moved up pitch I think we are now finally seeing what a class act he is and although I would say Andy Reid is a much better player , until now we have not really had left footed options up pitch and the fact we have Kyle Reid as well means we have exciting options in a position where we have been weak on and off for a decade .

I think Varney said that after the deal was done he went to the Valley and said goodbye to all the office staff, I thought that was a temendous gesture by him. Varney stated that no one had done that before ... presumably even "real charlton" .... true legend

I always heard it was Pardew's decision, certainly as he couldn't help himself but buy another erratic striker afterwards. Whatever the truth of it Reid ran his socks off for us, he'd pick up ball or tackle in our own third and run half the pitch to setup the 25%'s in our team.

If we went up to the champ I'd love to see Reidy back, especially if Sunderland paid most of his wages. Seemed to play more than Thomas, ZZ, and Ambrose in the same spell and it was no surprise when those occasional ball wanters but non-ball winners were shit as soon as he stopped doing the donkey work for the team.

I wanted JJ as soon as we went down, just so we had cm who'd tackle and pass to his own players. But I also think once Reidy left we were so overloaded by midfielders who were houdinis when the work had to be done, we were one step away from doom with that awful unbalanced squad. JJ and Matty Jarvis, whom loads of us knew was a gem at Gills, may have allowed all our other lazy players to play further up the pitch and be more effective.

    Very true, Colin.

People used to say Reidy was overweight and had no pace ........but I remember a glorious night at Bristol City 3 years ago, when in the last minute Reidy collected a pass from Fortune in the centre circle, veered down the left taking on 2 defenders and skinning them both ....... before flighting over the most delicate chip to the far post, where "Big Chris" Iwelumo came thundering in to head the winnner.

And people said Reidy had no pace?

McClaren has still got slight traces of his Dutch accent! I thought his last job was in Germany.
