I think Varney said that after the deal was done he went to the Valley and said goodbye to all the office staff, I thought that was a temendous gesture by him. Varney stated that no one had done that before ... presumably even "real charlton" .... true legend
I always heard it was Pardew's decision, certainly as he couldn't help himself but buy another erratic striker afterwards. Whatever the truth of it Reid ran his socks off for us, he'd pick up ball or tackle in our own third and run half the pitch to setup the 25%'s in our team.
If we went up to the champ I'd love to see Reidy back, especially if Sunderland paid most of his wages. Seemed to play more than Thomas, ZZ, and Ambrose in the same spell and it was no surprise when those occasional ball wanters but non-ball winners were shit as soon as he stopped doing the donkey work for the team.
I wanted JJ as soon as we went down, just so we had cm who'd tackle and pass to his own players. But I also think once Reidy left we were so overloaded by midfielders who were houdinis when the work had to be done, we were one step away from doom with that awful unbalanced squad. JJ and Matty Jarvis, whom loads of us knew was a gem at Gills, may have allowed all our other lazy players to play further up the pitch and be more effective.

Very true, Colin.
People used to say Reidy was overweight and had no pace ........but I remember a glorious night at Bristol City 3 years ago, when in the last minute Reidy collected a pass from Fortune in the centre circle, veered down the left taking on 2 defenders and skinning them both ....... before flighting over the most delicate chip to the far post, where "Big Chris" Iwelumo came thundering in to head the winnner.
[cite]Posted By: mascot88[/cite]It was a 400 percent pay rise... and the opportunity may not have been there the following window.. I dont begrudge him anything... it life, its football.. its money...
