SWFC - Post Match thoughts

edited September 2008 in General Charlton
Just got back.....(although I am ranting Andy Gray scores and we win 3 or 4 with ease).

What can you say?. We have lost to a team that I wouldn't even consider to be good enough to be refered to as one dimensional. I'll accept the Wolves game, they are flying and played us off the park. Weds were shite. We weren't much better. Weds had nothing but a hoof it forward and hope for the best mentality and we didn't have an answer.

To say we missed a hatful of chances is wide of the mark.

We had an awful lot of the ball in their half but time and time again the delivery was dire. I have been thinking that Varney looked like he might need a game on the bench, but to be fair to him he was the only one to put in a shift today.

Primus looked ok but a distinct lack of understanding with Hudson - summed up by the "after you, no after you old chap" routine for the first goal. Hudson has his worst game so far. Probably his only stinker to be fair.

Both fullbacks were terrible. Youga is getting worse and worse. I actually rated him quite highly. His distribution is nothing short of criminal. How many times did he hoof the ball into touch when trying to find Bouazza?. His football brain isn't up to much either - ball juggling 20 yards from goal when we are 2-1 down?.

Cranie is nothing special - perhaps he is a CB I don't know. He certainly isn't committed to the cause. Twice he looked like he fancied pulling out of 50/50 challenges. He offers nothing going forward.

Talking of offering nothing - Lloyd Sam.......if he was a race horse surely he would have been shot by now?. I just don't get it with him. No end product, no crossing ability and the strength of a feather. Please Pards drop him for Ambrose.

Talking of Pardew - some baffling tactical moves today. The worst of which saw Youga (who was already having an appalling game) move to RB to accomodate Basey. Why?. If Cranie was injured surely Semedo should be on?.

I am not one for rumours but I really think something is goinbg on with Zheng. Not fit my arse......

Back to 4-5-1 on Tuesday and a backs to the wall 0-0?

Mid table and mediocre this season - if we are lucky.

LLoyd Sam is a decent player and actually got the ball in the danger area on a number of occasions in the second half but no one attacked it. Cranie never offers him any support going forwards and the Centre Mid was annonymous, you can't expect a winger to have a great game when you bang the ball to him and then don't support. It is absolutely no coincidence he plays 1000 times better with MOoToo behind him as he then has support.

Youga i just don't know about, his passing is generally abysmal and in to touch but then occasionally he hits a great ball (like in the first half when he nutmegged one of their players playig the ball to Bouazza).

Who reckons we could move Pardew 'upstairs' as Directof of football? Don't thikn he would accept it but in my opinion he can find great players on the transfer market (i know he has bought some duds but so does every manager), his big problem is that he gets nothing out of them on the pitch and his tactics are baffling, i mean Holland as Centre Back when you have Cranie on the pitch!! We could then bring in an older manager who is tactically astute. Just look at the players...Youga - came back from Scunthorpe looking great, now average at best, Bailey, looked a world beater in his first couple of games, today just passed him buy, Varney - 27 goals in one season for Crewe, now 'a hard worker', Grey - top Championship scorer for Burnley,,,now poor...

LOL! ..... Made me literally laugh out loud...!!!

Poor old Sam, improve your crossing or it's the slaughterhouse for you.
I even feel a bit sorry for him.

I actually thought Lloyd Sam was better than he has been all season today.

He beat some defenders and crossed the ball for a change.

Sam has done next to nothing so far this season. I lose patience with him when he plays as he lacks end product. He does look good when he plays with Yassin though. Time for Ambrose to have another crack I think.

Lloyd Sam has no end product, today was the prime opportunity to give Jonjo 30 minutes to come on and express himself and change a game i think we need to have him on the bench for cameo's such as today.Pardew needed to change things after 10 mins of second half not 25 mins.I not concerned with play off's or top tow as we aint good enough I have a real fear of bottom 3 we need to be stronger.

I really didn't think we played that badly. Weds had 3 shots all game. We should have battered them. Hudson had a shocker and cost us the game, along with the wayward finishing. Why he escorted Small into the area to score rather than putting in a tackle, I'll never know.

I thought Primus was excellent in the first half and to describe Youga as terrible today baffles me. He combined well with Bouzza several times. I think you're harsh on Sam too, who had a great shot well saved.

I know we lost but I still think that we're going in the right direction.

For me our wingers don't do enough to play both of them together it leaves the full backs and 2 central midfielders under too much pressure. We aint good enough to afford that luxury.

I suppose everyone sees the match differently to others. I actually thought we played ok today. we certainly dominated the game throughout, but a couple of times we defended badly and got punished. We still had enough chances to win the game, but lack the firepower up front. If you are only averaging just over a goal a game, you're not going to win that many. I think we need to try something different, and maybe give Dickson and Todorov a chance to impress . I'd also give Shelvey another go in midfield to try and create more chances. We've got the grafters, but lack someone who offers something different.
  • Options
we need to have that option on the bench of flair shelvey, dickson?

Varney was excellent today the only one to come out of it with any credit. The guy worked his nads off.

I actually think we should drop the wingers and put in a diamond midfield. ZZ and Bailey inside. Wow look at me the next Terry Venables.

    My team for Tues :

    Weaver
    Semedo/Crainie Hudson Primus Youga
    Basey
    Bailey ZZ
    Ambrose
    Varney Todorov

For me do we work hard enough when things aint going our way do we track back put the hard tackles in do the smelly stuff.IMO we don't we gotta start being more determined when things aren't going our way.We have to earn the right to play football.

3 shocking bits of decision making and a shocking bit of finishing cost us today

    1. First goal, the lack of a decison between Hudson and Youga was horrible, just dump the bloke and take a card if needs be, but nothing done, and 1-1
    2. Bailey 10 seconds before the second goal trying to do something clever when something simple was needed, he'll learn
    3. Hudson deciding not to tackle or go to Tudgay, nothing done 2-1.

and as for Gray miss, jesus, take a touch

Have to disagree with the "Lloyd Sam has no end product" bandwagon. He put a shedload of decent crosses in in the second half, and the lack of "end product" was down to the fact that no bastard was in the six yard box attacking them. That's an issue with the forwards not him. He was way more effective than Bouazza today, and to be honest rather than take Gray off I'd have moved Varney wide when Todorov came on instead - although in hindsight Todorov really needs more games under his belt yet, he was well off the pace when he came on.

Little to add, Clem Side has said virtually everything i think. Almost to the word.

To me basically, it was 'one of those days'. The painfully frustrating thing though was it was 'yet ANOTHER one of those days'.

    Weaver
    Semedo/Crainie Hudson Primus Youga
    Basey
    Bailey ZZ
    Ambrose
    Varney Todorov

Good call on the team, although would have Moo2 rather than Semedo.
[cite]Posted By: aliwibble[/cite]Have to disagree with the "Lloyd Sam has no end product" bandwagon.

Not a fan of Sam but thought he was excellent today. Primus was good and was not involved in the first goal conceded that was Youga, also thought Holland played well, although his cameo at CB was bizarre, slow, short and can't tackle =ideal CB

Every season there's always a scapegoat.. Ambrose, Kish (go back through the seasons, there's always one) and this season it seems Sam's getting the ribbing. Why? I could not see much wrong with our attacking play down either wing today although we were better down the left. All this "no end product" shit.. where is it coming from?

Additionally I'm absolutely furious... I don't know why exactly. I can't believe it, how the hell did we lose to that? Wednesday were crap, the worst team I've seen this season. We lost to that!
  • Options
I'm not furious, i'm just really disappointed and a bit disheartened.

We've got no given right to beat anyone. You have to go out and do a shift and earn it. What disheartens me is i really do think they put it in today.

I just hope we go into Tuesday with the same attitude, but also show there is a bit more about us at the same time.

I agree with a lot of what Clem_snide said, Hudson had a mare, Primus will need a couple of games to settle in, the full backs were terrible etc. How on earth has Cranie made the England under 21 side?! The defending for both goals was nothing short of shocking. Some fans near me were moaning at Pardew after the 2nd went in, now he might have his faults but he surely can't be blamed for defenders backing off, failing to tackle, or get a block in.
I thought Sam had one of his better games today. Always an outlet, troubled their full back and got some good crosses over.
Gray for me doesn't do enough, yes he's the top scorer but he's terrible. Not sure we'll get 90 out of Todorov on tuesday but he'd be a better bet. Where was Dickson today? Sub all season then suddenly Todorov has jumped ahead of him.
However all that said on another day i think we could've won 2 or 3-0. We hit the post twice and could've been out of sight before they scored. In fact if we'd got a 2nd they may well have folded like they did at Reading the other week. Unfortunately for us, they got the 2nd goal and gained confidence and belief.
I know Wednesday were bad but i'd feel a whole lot worse going to Palace on tuesday if we'd been played off the park and thumped 4-0. I'd like to think today was just one of those days and i'm sure we'll be fired up and ready to go on Tuesday night.

One other thing i'd like to add is if you're either of the 2 complete idiots who sit in the north upper, H block, row HH (i think), don't bother turning up next week. These 2 morons never get behind the team, didn't even stand up or cheer when we scored, actually seemed happier when Wednesday scored as it meant they could moan and boo, and shouted a load of abuse at Pardew after their goals (when as i've already said, we can hardly blame him for basic defensive errors). If you want quality attacking football and to see your team win every week then f*ck off to Man Utd or Chelsea because quite frankly your 'support' isn't needed at the Valley.

You just know we'll win 2-0 on Tuesday now, though!

don't wory boys I'm going to mny 1st game of the season Tuesday we always win at Palace when I go LOL

was a poor result and for all our posession we didn't create enough. However we did create enough to win the game.

it happens. the team were working hard and SW stuck everything in a blue/white shirt behind the ball in the second half and they did their job well.

Yes I am a bit annoyed that we didn't win, but it wasn't for lack of effort.
Games like that happen (arsenal lost in similar circumstances today), that is why football is such a great game.

The sun was shining, the football was entertaining if not ultimately satisfying, life really isn't that bad.

    agree with you there nss.

we haven't got a decent full back in our squad, the wide players decide to turn up once a month, some people on here were saying fortune shouldn't play (well you've got your wish for another 5 weeks, lets see if you feel the same then), even if varney and gray get 25 goals between them where are the other 30 gonna come from to keep us out of a relegation scrap?
we haven't taken a single point off any team that was in this division last year, with that in mind are we any better prepared than this time last year.
but we are still 5th 14th.

I agree with all of that. On another day, without playing any better or worse we would have beaten them easily. I wondered about the sun factor in the first half, I think it made us somewhat tentative.

Hudson did have a poor game but lets go after him too much because he has been brilliant so far. I think we missed Fortune and the indecisiveness when it mattered, showed. Youga played well, maybe he was part of the collective mistake for the first goal but that aside and three wayward passes, he had a good game.

After watching us play Donny and Nottingham - yesterdays defeat did not come as much of a suprise although the difference was we created a lot more chances than the previous two combined whilst maintaining the deficiencies in midfield, Kelly Youga and lack of confidence in the finishing (Bouazza and Gray please stand up)

Sheff Weds - not a pretty team to watch but it goes to show what can happen if you get given a few opportunities and convert them.

The booing at the half time whistle was uncalled for - we don't have a divine right to winning (as Smudge said).

There are 38 games left so thats plenty of time to either make a decent stab at it or completely fecking it up.
The customary win at Palace will lift the gloom for a few hours :)

At the moment we are not very good but it certainly does not stop me from enjoying the day which I certainly did.
