I feel sorry for Pardew

Yesterday I was like everyone else I guess, shocked, angry, dissapointed and calling for the head of our manager. Having slept on it and calmed down a bit I can honestly say that I feel sorry for Pardew right now. He has obviously tried his hardest and wouldn`t want us to be in the situation we find ourselves. It has been pointed out that we are only 3 wins from a position to challenge for a playoff spot. Don`t get me wrong I am not confident this will happen but perhaps just perhaps AP will come out fighting and turn this mess round. In any case I can`t help feeling sorry for him.

bud i wish i could forgive but the man has got me mad, i have no sorrow for him i feel the sorrow for everyone on here more than him he is to blame only he can change the predicament and that is by walking
  • Do you honestly think that if we stick by Pardew and he then takes us down, that he will show the same loyalty to us should a bigger club come calling ?
Of course not, he'll be off like a shot out of a gun. So no need to feel sorry for him. He earns more in one year than most people do in 20 and he's doing a very poor job.
  • Suggest you keep your sympathy for the 21,527 (minus a couple of hundred delirious Barnsley supporters who couldn't believe their luck) who wasted good money on watching such a spineless performance yesterday, SHG !
  • i do not feel sorry for him at all
  • Pardew doesnt feel sorry for me, i travel from cardiff every home game getting back 3oclock in the morning for midweek games. HE MUST GO NOW. i have been going since 1977 and this team has no heart and no fight. Most of the points we have, we have got by luck. We are the worst team in the league by a long way.
  • I do take all of your points. I really do.
  • I don't feel sorry for his because he isn't doing what is right for Charlton, i.e. slinging his hook, he is doing what is right for no1!
  • Nope I dont feel sorry for him at all...what Razil said...
  • No one should feel any sympahty, the only person who feels sorry for Alan is himself. I've never known a man put so many exuces out there everytime he loses a match.

The sad thing is as others have said he seems honestly to think that our current position has very little to do with himself. He is lucky that he now has 2 away games where he wont get bombarded, but I am sure if we fail to win any of them he will get a proper roasting at Valley after that, I predict he will get sacked after the Sheffield game by which point we will bottom of league.
  • I dont feel sorry for him I feel that he has turned our club into a laughing stock.

Free season ticket if we get promotion, don't make me laugh. With Pardew in charge we won't be in this league next season we will be in division 1

  • I find it impossible to have even a modicum of sympathy for someone taking c£800K a year from our Club and not doing a decent job nor the decent thing right now. I actually feel much more sorry for all the players as it is their careers he is messing up too.

    Couldn't agree more.

I don't feel sorry for him.

I certainly believe he has tried to make things happen and I still feel that he has been let down by his players on more than one occasion but he has had time and money since relegation - for which I don't blame him - to at least build a team and a squad that can compete in this division and play to some or any sort of system. He has not done so. Yes ZZ and Fortune are big misses but injuries affect all teams.

I felt his record and his personality was very very over praised when he came and his flaws ignored. A lot of people bought into the Pardew "image" and gave him a very long honeymoon period when he could do no wrong. His public announcements were once seen evidence of his intelligence and wit. Now they are described as excuses and baffling nonsense.

Personally I don't care if he reads out the phone book in press conferences I just want to see progress on the pitch. I can't see that.

Time for him to go IMHO. Easy for me to say on a message board but a lot less so for Messrs Chappell, Murray, Whitehand et al.

They have to balance the cost of getting rid with the cost of continuing failure plus weigh up if the alternatives would be any better. A tough decision to make but sometimes, even if we don't agree, the right decision is sticking with what you have. We shall have to wait to see what they do but please let's not interpret a lack of immediate words or actions from the boardroom as a lack of appreciation for the seriousness of the situation.

Rednapp and Kinnear have shown that, in the short term at least, an experienced head can have an impact and lift previously underperforming players. Who else is out there would could come in and have that level of impact on the players? Curbs is obviously one and Sam Allydyce is another but both bring their baggage with them and there is still a cloud over big Sam.

We could look to the lower divisions for a fresh young coach but no obvious names spring to mind, or my mind at least.

We could look abroad to a different type of coach as did West Ham but again who is available. I have no idea.

We could keep it in the family and go for a Di Canio or Jorge Costa but both are untried. Mark Bowen knows the club but would he be likely to leave Man City for us? I doubt it. Kinsella, Brown, Powell were great players but other than that what do they have on their CVs to make us think they can do a job here and now.

Personally I have a lot of time for Phil Parkinson and his record at Colchester, if not Hull, stands up. But is he too close and too much a part of the Pardew regime to make a difference. Maybe with a Powell or Kinsella as coach although both could equally assist Di Canio or one of the other names.

Put a gun to my head and I would have to pick between Big Sam (if we could afford him and ignore the bung rumours) or plump for Di Canio with Powell.
  • Powell/Kinsella/Di Canio is a nice idea, but it would be a big risk. Could work out, but could make things worse.

Who we replace him with is the main issue for me, no one that we can realistically get stands out. Maybe someone would if I looked further into it.
  • 'A lot of people bought into the Pardew "image" and gave him a very long honeymoon period when he could do no wrong'

    Spot on!

Bar his first month or so in charge he has been taking us slowly but surely down two divisions (I know we were nigh on relegated in his first season)

WHAT HAS HE DONE TO IMPROVE THIS CLUB????????????????

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Dave Penney (Darlington), Mark Stimson (Gillingham) or Nigel Adkins (Scunthorpe United).
  • I hope the problem is Pardew because at least that can be remedied (have to say though I was one who thought he was a very good appointment). My worry is that we just aren't good enough to maintain even our current position.
  • We have the players to keep us in this division and maybe challenge for a play-off spot.
  • [cite]Posted By: Sideways[/cite]Dave Penney (Darlington), Mark Stimson (Gillingham) or Nigel Adkins (Scunthorpe United).

Good shouts but I'll admit knowing nothing about them.

Adkins comes over well on TV but that is a well dodgy surname for a Charlton boss ; - )

A Gills boss? Didn't we do that once before?
  • No I don't feel sorry for Pardew. He started off by saying he had a two year plan to get us out of this division, and he could well achieve that if we don't improve - unfortunately going the wrong way. Given that the transfer window is closed, the board should not rush into anything. If we could get someone in to give us the 'Redknapp effect' then clearly we should consider that. But nobody springs to mind.

One name not mentioned is Mark Robson. I understood the club rated him very highly, so it was a surprise when he slipped away in the summer 'to have a go at managing'. Not sure what he's doing now. Mark Robson attended an Essex Branch event a couple of years back and made it clear he loved the club and dreamed of managing the club one day. Obviously we can't know how good he would be - there's no guarantees - but we should be able to afford him and there shouldn't be any skeletons in the closet.

I have seen patches where this team / squad have played some very attractive stuff over the course of this season. It hasn't been done consistently nor has it been done over the course of an entire game. Most of this I firmly believe has to do with psychology and motivation. The fact that it has been there in patches means the team can play. We just need to be consistent. I also base it on the fact that we have players proven at this level and the next. From looking around the division and seeing the likes of Brizzle City and Ipswich play at numerous points this season, their squads are on a par with us and just look where they are. It comes down to the managers of these teams getting the tactics right, picking the players in their respective squads that are on form and not on the basis of being matey with them, (something that Pard's I think is guilty of), and ensuring the team picked for the day is balanced and motivated to go out and do well. This division flatters to deceive and with the exception of Birmingham the teams are very average indeed. For example, Nicky Bailey is far from being a gifted player but he is doing incredibly well at this level as his fitness and motivation is very high. If we could get 11 of him we wouldn't go down. In the Prem this would not be the case…11 Nicky Bailey types would be the equivalent of a Derbyesque type effort, but in this division it is enough to survive. Of course I’m not saying we should be happy with surviving…far from it but the point is we have enough to stay in the fizzy pops top division and the doom merchants have it all wrong.

Of course this is just my opinion and people can disagree. Oh and don't forget I said MAYBE make the play-offs but we are DEFINITELY good enough to make the grade in this division.

Wasn't a great success though. Di Canio has no experience at all as far as I know but I'm warming to the idea.
  • I fail to see how anyone can have any sympathy for Pards. We are going backwards and the buck stops with him. Yesterday about two shots on target, Ipswich one, the previous home game only a couple. C'mon the guy is turning us into a joke and all on only 800k per year. As for whether we can afford to pay him off ? Surely the question is can we afford not to ? 800k would be small change compared to a drop into Division 1. As for a replacement, I find it hard to imagine anyone could do a worse job at the moment. Even a novice like Kinsella could motivate this team to do better and instill a bit of pride and passion and that would go a long, long way to sorting out some of the current problems.

I've lost all faith, please walk Alan and do us all a favour.
  • I don't think another round of pass the manager as we did after Curbs will help the stability of the club, however if Pardew isn't able to turn this sittuation around soon I think the board will have little alternative but to make the change in the hope of the Rednapp effect.

A possible solution could be to put Peacock in charge till the end of the season when it would give us better scope and time to make a better long term choice.

CAFC through and through he has managed other clubs so has experience and is well versed with Curbs ways, which would be more apt to playing the type of no nonsense football needed to keep us up and get us out of this mess.
  • SHG i agree with you but it is borderline now after barnsley :o(
  • I feel more sorry for Les Reed than Pardew.

Must have spent the last 22 months sitting there watching us get worse and worse and thinking 'even I could do better than that...'

What's more, with the benefit of hindsight I think he would have done...

I've got a lot of time and respect for Les but even I thought it was right to let him go. The abuse he got because he wasn't as good in press conferences as Alan Pardew though........... ummm
