Carlisle vs. Charlton (31/10/2009) - Poll, Teams, Formations, Style, Worries...

One of the most arduous trips of the season takes place this weekend as Charlton travel up to Carlisle to try and win an away game for the first time since late August.

Preparations for the game have been rocked by the news that the Bob Elliot is going to be out of action “for around 6 weeks”. Whether this means Randolph the Red Nosed Keeper comes in or Carl Ikeme adds to the list of players who have worn the Charlton shirt remains to be seen although it seems Ikeme will start at Brunton Park.

Although Frazer Richardson seemed to go off injured against the Jills, presumably he will remain in dependable Back 4. Although I feel like I am covering the same ground week on week – the two things Parky needs to scribble on/wipe off on his whiteboard at Sparrows Lane is whether to give Lloyd Sam a rest and whether to re-introduce Master Shelvey at the expense of the much derised (but not always justified) Izale McLeod.

It would seem it will only be a matter of time before Dave Mooney replaces hernia-op bound Deon as well.

With Millwall facing Colchester at The Toolbox and the MK Dons taking on Dickson Rovers there seems a chance for us and Leeds to give ourselves a chink of daylight between the chasing pack. But we need to win.

No disrespect to Carlisle but we really should be winning these games, we need to start playing football again and we need to start creating chances more regularly. If not then I feel that “We’re still 2nd” could be the new “We’re still 5th”.

And we all know how that ended up.

Come on Charlton, let's re-assert our authority on this league with a thumping 4-1 win.

  • Bring back Shelvey PLEASE
  • Agree it is time to bring Shelvey back. I would imagine he's hated being on the bench and will be really hungry. Sam should make way for him.

I think it's a shame Burton hasn't already had his op this week. The fact that he hasn't presumably means he will play. A mistake, IMO. I'd start Mooney.

I'd like to think WSS is wrong about the loanee getting the nod over Randolph, but he's far more knowledgable than me so I suspect he's right.

I fear a draw. Hope I'm wrong because that will mean the whole of Sept and Oct without an away win. Hard to see how a team can go two months without winning away from home and still expect automatic promotion at the end of the campaign...
  • I would revert back to 4-5-1, Shelvey replacing McLeod and Burton or Mooney up front - which one depends on how Deon's being doing this week. Need to make sure we time his op right. Ikeme in goal for me.

I doubt it! The Ikeme comment was purely a gut feeling.

3-0 to us Shelvey back in a 4-3-1-2

    Randolph
    Mambo Sodje Dailly Youga
    Racon Semedo Bailey
    JonJo
    Burton McLeod
  • Charlton win with a 4-5-1 formation with the team that started the season except Randolph in goal and Sodje for Llera.
  • Randolph
    Richardson-Sodje-Dailly-Youga
    Semedo
    Sam-Racon-Bailey
    JonJo
    Burton

I'd revert to a 4-5-1 formation and bring Shelvey back.

    Charlton to win.
  • As above, 4-5-1, Sodje and Randolph in

Must win game, think we'll nick it 1-2
  • 4-5-1 for me too, Shelvey in for McLeod and Mooney up front. Send Deon off to get his hernia sorted. Waggy in for Sam who looks tired, Racon wide left and move Bailey inside. Reckon Ikeme will start as why would Wolves lend him to us as a bench warmer only, not that I agree with that.

Worries - we don't score enough goals. A hard fought 1-0 defeat I'm afraid.
  • 4-1-2-1-2 for me
    Randoph deserves his chance
Richardson, daily, sodje, youga(assuming no injuries)
    Semedo
    Racon & bailey
    Shelvey
    Mcleod, Mooney

I reckon we will win 3-1

  • Just seen on the OS Richardson is a doubt and Solly got injured in training an is out for 3 months. If Richardson doesn't make it I'd imagine Basey would come in at left back and Youga moves across to right back, as the OS suggests. It mentions Dailly being an option at right back but I think he's too important at centre back, as is Semedo in central midfield.

Shame for Solly as I think he'd have gotten a few games eventually with Richardson playing with injuries and picking up knocks.
  • I think we will be lucky to pick up anything given the injuries.

    2-0 Carlisle I fear...
  • 0-0 or 1-0 to them. We are just useless going forward.

Racon needs to et himself on the scoresheet soon, its nt good enough at the moment.
  • Well I think 0-0 or 1-0 us
  • Seems Richardson is now a real doubt for Saturday so unless the hinted loan player comes in (http://www.cafc.co.uk/newsview.ink?nid=35038&newstype=x) then it is going to have to be the back 4 that finished at the Jills game you'd think.
  • Charlton to win. Lucky ground ! Ikeme to play in goal.

    [cite]Posted By: Addickson's God[/cite]3-0 to us Shelvey back in a 4-3-1-2

    Randolph
    Richardson Sodje Dailly Youga
    Racon Semedo Bailey
    JonJo
    Burton McLeod
Would love to see us play Jonjo behind Burton and McLeod but with the midfield in a diamond formation as someone on here suggested in another thread, sadly I don't think Parky would have the bottle to do it.
  • With Richo a major doubt I'd go:

    Randolph
    Semedo Daily Sodje Youga
    Sam Racon Bailey Shelvey
    Mooney Burton
  • dont care about formations but 1 thing is for certain we need to start taking our chances and scoring goals the current forwards dont seem capable, hope they prove me wrong but come january we need to go into the transfer market and get a proven goalscorer.

    1-3

4-5-1 formation, with shelvy comin back in and izale up top on his own, burton dropped to bench, dailey to come in at rb and llera to drop into the middle - not what I would do but thats how i reckon we'll line up
  • 1-0 win

    Randolph
    Daily Llera Sodje Youga
    Sam Semedo Racon Bailey
    Shelvey
    Burton

I wouldn't play Dailly at right back .... 36 years, old not as quick as he once was, he could be vulnerable to a pacy winger, especially caught on the break with no cover.

I'd deffo leave Dailly with Sodje in the middle, they are a pretty solid pairing.

With all these Parky hints about trying to borrow a specialist RB, it seems to me that he's reluctant to move Semedo from his central anchorman role.

These 3 are the solid defensive triangle that the team is built on.
Whatever he does, Parky will want to leave that alone.

Especially with a different keeper coming in.
  • I think this game will be more about Carlisle than Charlton tbh. We have become predictable. They are at home and need points. If they are up for it then I can see our recent lack of goal threat costing us once again. All the early season promise is for me anyway starting to look a very long time ago. We are not playing particularly well. Our midfield goals have dried up and we don`t have a striker who looks like he can fire us to promotion. I have sadly gone for a home win.
  • going to be a rip snorting 4-4 us scoring 92 min ...............
  • i think 1-2 or 0-2 in our favour.

messy affair but I think we'll win

    just
  • ---------------Ikeme
    Omusuzi--Sodje--Daily--Youga
    Sam---Racon--Semedo--Bailey
    ----------Jonjo
    -----------------Mooney

This would be my team, bit of freshness to the line up with the return of Jonjo and inclusion of Mooney upfront.
Also having to include Omusuzi at RB, wasn't sure about the keepers spot, but i reckon Parky will bring in the new fella.
Tried to keep the core of the side with the ever-present Semedo, Racon, Daily, Sodje, Youga and Bailey.
Reckon we can nick 3 Points! C'mon you Reds!!!

    Ikeme
    Omusuzi--Sodje--Daily--Youga
    Sam---Racon--Semedo--Bailey
    Jonjo
    Mooney

agree, that would be my pick too.
  • Charlton have got to win this type of game or we might as well forget promotion. I'm going for 0-2 away win for the boys. Jonjo return is a must. Bench for Lloyd but give him a run later in the game.
