[cite]Posted By: jimmymelrose[/cite]I love these threads. Being outside the UK it's impossible to get to find out about new music in a 'natural' way.
Listening now to 'Hiding neath my umbrella.' Certainly a time and place for that. Not sure about other songs on this album though.
I don't get all the fuss about Artic Monkeys either - it sounds very unoriginal.
Surprised that no-one's mentionned The Temper Trap yet - excellent stuff when building up to a match with my Vets team!
Arctic Monkeys defined a generation with their first album alone. Maybe they wouldn't of taken off quite as much as they did without bands like The Strokes, The Libertines and Kasabian who made Indie/Rock music fashionable/good again.
They're pretty original in the sense they're not afraid of experimenting with different sounds to the style their fans are used to. The trouble with the success of Arctic Monkeys is that it spawned a lot of copy cat bands such as Kaiser Chiefs, Wombats etc who are truly terrible.
Why are people so anti Kaiser Chiefs? They didn't feature at all in the Top 500 Albums of the 21st C from Q mag or whatever it was that someone posted on here a while back. I'm not into much modern music but I like them far more than those pretentious Monkeys. As for calling anyone in the music business a Copy Cat.......!!! Get real!

The Kaiser Chiefs formed before the Arctic Monkeys and released their first album before the Arctic Monkeys, so you can't really accuse the Kaiser Chiefs of copying them. Neither of them are much cop.
[cite]Posted By: Rothko[/cite]The White Lies album just leaves me cold, there trying to hard to sound the way they do, which is different to say Delphic who sound orginial
I found out at a big family gathering last year that I'm related to the White Lies bassist, but still, I agree. The best summary I read of them was a review that said it's like they were made by an indie generator.`

There sometimes seems to be a confusion between 'pretentious' and depth. Just because the Arctic Monkeys have more to them than the straightforward sing-along pop of The Kasier Chiefs, doesn't mean they are 'pretentious'. That they're lauded so much can get nauseous (as Red Robin says, The Strokes and Libertines set the blueprint well before) but that doesn't change the fact that Alex Turner is a brilliant lyricist.
just been listening to God Help The Girl - very good! Reminds me I forgot Regina Spector's album "Far" which is in a similar vein and extremely good - my no.3 I reckon.
Heard Delphic on r6 and didn't think much of it but comparing them to New Order means I shall have to listen more now!
[cite]Posted By: Rothko[/cite]Mentioned Delphic elsewhere on here yesterday, going to be mega
Saw Delphic on Tuesday with all their Electro machines - some really good stuff! No where near as popular as Liam Fray though who stole the show at the XFM gig.
My favourite records this year would be from Kasabian, The Cribs, and errrrrrm SUBO
Bon Iver - For Emma album this year - may have been released last year but I got it this and it's superb stuff.
Wintersleep - Welcome to the Night Sky - pretty good, slightly marred by the lead singer sounding like Rich Hall when I saw them live
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes - Once again not exceptional but drew me into listening to music of a different type which was great.

That's cheating Sco, it was also released in 2008 :-)
Otherwise it would definitely have been on my list!
Madness - The Liberty of Norton Folgate ... a London mini-opera which takes their music to a new dimension, overtures and anthems, truly excellent. Don't expect chart hits on here ... it's very different. Dickens meets The Mighty Boosh.
Florence and the Machine - Lungs ... wow, what a great voice and terrific songs too, I can't wait for the next album.
Cat Stevens (Yusuf) - Roadsinger ... what a return, wonderful music combined with his distinctive voice.
Bat for Lashes - Two Suns ... seems wrong to leave this out, but just misses out on top 3.
Mumford and Son - Sigh No More ... haven't yet bought it so not included in my top 3 ... but if it were already in my collection, it would definitely be up there.
Comments
Jamie T - Kings and Queens
Jack Penate - Everything is new / Horrors - Primary Colours

Dreary, camp, nuurthern accents the both of them.
Good band though are Cribs
The copy cat point's a good one though! Maybe I didn't choose the right words there, as the history of music has been built on copy cats!
In this light and on this evening - Editors
