Stockport County in trouble

A good norvern monkey mate of mine was telling me last night that they are on the brink of going under and out of business for the relatively measely sum of £3m.

Pretty shocking when their neighbours probably pay their reserves that amount in wages.

His old man went on a march to the FA in Manchester yesterday but doesnt look good.

Apparently they had a kind of supporters trust and the finances got messed up somehow.

Terrible situtation and as they are one of the oldest teams in the league with obviously loyal supporters considering the competition in that area its pretty sad.

Havent hear anything really about it on the news and its probably only when a newcastle gets in trouble that the people running football will sit up and take notice.

Jesus we have higher debts than them. Bloody hell its looking bleak for so many clubs atm as you say sad as they are one of the oldest clubs. I hope they dont have to go into admin.

I wouldn't want to see ANY club go under and i hope they can sort things out.

Its devastating for the supporters and when you support an unfashionable club like that it probablyu means a lot more than if youre a Man utd or Arsenal "fan".

Really hope it works out for them. The modern game seems to be imploding and there is practically no interest outside the top four.

Picked up a copy of the Evening Gooner on Monday and as its a london paper expected to see an article about the millwall game but wasnt even a line reporting it.

Shocking isn't it. I cant stand top four corprate wankerish football stadiums full of people eating Prawn sandwiches, dressed in suits doing business not even caring about the club they are watching. To be honest i prefer the league we are in as you get real fans, real people supporting real clubs. I know the football is rubbish in comparison but at least the supporters are loyal.

Pretty much true Ru but I do also sympathise with the proper fans of those clubs most of whom were probably priced out a long time ago.

Yea true, i know that, for example Man Utd were the first Manchester club so not as manufactured as everyone thinks. However Man U have also not always been a top team so you can imagine there are loyal fans who have been with them through hard times. As you say Rod they are probly local lads who have now been priced out by sad posh southerners who have no connection with manchester atall or even worse not even with this country in some cases. So although Man U are not as manufactured as everyone thinks i would say Arsenal are. Arsenal are just a money making franchise as far as i can see. Now we all know Liverpools history so we cant really talk there but again they have their corprate southern element who have no connection with Liverpool atall. Now Chelsea really get to me because allot of my family are Chelsea fans and went every week during the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. When everyone in Stamfford Bridge was from that area when it was a scary place to visit. How money changes some clubs, sad in a way. I remember an Interview with noel Gallgher on MOTD last season after a Man City game and he said he missed cockneys trembling in the cold at the thought of getting a taxi in mosside after the game (i was probly one of them) but i do miss a certain element of the game like that it doesnt need to be violent but banter singing etc is all part of the day out. But yea in a word the corprate element of football is bollocks.

I agree with both these posts. In my area and through my work I know and see many Chelsea 'fans' who barely know anything about the team they claim to support but manage to wear all the gear and slag off people who dare to wear shirts of your bread and butter type clubs. Conversely their are a few honourable supporters of Chelsea that are not only highly knowledgeable about Charlton but also very complimentary saying how much they wish we were still in the Premier League and remembering how many times we beat them and expecting us to return to the top flight soon! These guys actually tend to actually got to Chelsea matches and have been doing so for years, and I respect them as true supporters who just happen to be enjoying the good times having paid for them through the lean times. The rest are just band wagon jumpers.

Yes Pilchard defo and there is memebrs of my family who would fall into that catergory of CFC fan who love Chelsea but have nothing but good things to say about us (apart from when we beat them). I particually enjoy reminding they memebrs of my family about us being the only team in the prem to beat them at the bridge under Murinhio (spelt wrong) on penalties yes and in the Carling cup yes but we still beat them at the bridge under murinhio no other team did it.

    EDIT:

However these fans are part of Chelseas past now im affraid and Arsenal have no such fans and will gain no such respect from me even the memebers of my family who support Arsenal are not real football fans that club is just manufactured ballshite.

I think a lot of the knowledgable old Chelski fan's have been priced out by the Russian revolution but a few still manage to get to the bridge, as I said I have no problems with these guys at all, they are fan's who have seen them in the lower reaches of the 2nd tier and I don't begrudge them their glory. It's the Jump aboard opportunist glory hunters that I despise with a passion.
On the Arsenal front, whilst I have nothing against them per se I have yet to meet an Arsenal fan who watches their football in the stadium, they all seem to be armchair fans.

    From Stockport Vital

By the way do we lose 3 points if they go bust and fail to come out of administration ?

So, having just completed a gruelling hike to Deansgate, Manchester and back, I'll take a look at all the positives and negatives that have come from today's Protest March.

Well firstly, around 300 County fans gathered for the long haul down to Manchester from Edgeley Park at about 11am, and off we went. After a short pause for a rendition of the Anthem in from of the Sky, BBC and ITV cameras we went on our way and down the A6, to many beeping cars and shouts of encouragement from passers-by.

The first port of call was Stockport Town Hall, where protesters climbed aboard the steps and held banners stating 'Brian Kennedy is a Shark', 'Save our Stockport' and 'Hands Off Edgeley Park' aloft over the main road. Whilst we waited, with organiser Dave Schofield waiting to speak to Councillor Dave Goddard, we were unsurprisingly told that actually, our beloved Man-City tie wearing Head Councillor had taken a day off. Big shock.

After a few more songs and chants for the following media, we were off again. Aside from a local chippy worker asking us if he was going to be busy tonight, this walk to the PFA went without any real mentionable moments!

As we arrived into Manchester city centre, flags, scarves and banners were all held aloft again as all kind of County songs were chanted at the passing public. As a mini-police escort was shaken off (through no fault of our own!) the Marchers took a turning into the PFA Car Park, still waving flags and anti-Sale banners.

The successful 'Your Town, Your Team' County stickers were stuck all over the front of the PFA as security guards were told to leave them there by the Head of the PFA, Gordon Taylor, who swiftly answered County fans cries and came out to speak to us.

After a few technical issues with sorting the megaphone out, he was finally heard by the hordes of County fans, and after a quick 'Happy Christmas' he had this to say.

'I can understand your concerns and fears for the future of your football club, and anger towards the administrators.

"I can say here and now that the PFA is totally behind you, and your protests, and we are happy to join you in your fight to preserve your football club and its future.

"As we have done with so many clubs in similar situations in the past, we will continue to use our money to help you and your club at this difficult time.

"We wish you all the best in that fight and I can assure you that we will work in partnership to keep Stockport County Football Club alive."

A big ovation for Taylor was then given by the County fans, happy with what they had heard and searching now for administrators Leonard Curtis' offices.

A quick walk of about 15 minutes followed, with the tiring protesters still belting out the Anthem and 'Gary Ablett's Blue 'n' White Army', making sure the Manchester locals heard.

Amusement was now being found by sticking the County stickers to anything and everything, including taxi-drivers and bus-drivers!

As we arrived (with a few fans losing their footing on the dangerously slippy steps!) at the administrators offices, a bunch of massive County flags, ranging from the Crest to Danny Bergara, were being layed down at the foot of the doorstep.

There was no trouble from the gang of Protesters, but plenty of anti-Leonard Curtis chanting, all of which is currently being broadcast on Sky Sports New, and Dave Schofield was eventually invited in to speak to the administrators.

A full chant of Arthur Brownlow sufficed to entertain the waiting fans, and when Mr Schofield emerged again, it was clear that, though the best efforts of the Protesters, we weren't finding out anything new. Definite negative.

An announcement will be made tomorrow, but once again, all we have to go on is hope and determination. And judging by today's showing, we've still got plenty of that.

Agree 100% mate. The Chelsea fans in my family are exactally as you describe they still get to the bridge maybe 5 times a season because of various reasons. The jump abroad opportunist fans are what i despise at any club. When we were in the prem we had a few who were only coming to the Valley cos Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea were playing. Now Highbury was a different story and the memebrs of my family who are gooners went week in week out to Highbury as they were brought up on Highbury estate there so who else its not quiet severn sisters (spurs area). Now they do not go as not only can they not afford it but they are sick of being told to sit down by idiots in suits who have no clue about football and they also claim the atmos at the emmirates is one of the worst in the country aparently it just sucks as a stadium.

That's because no one generally goes bust, they all come out of administration.

Anyway just checked and Norwich & Leeds have both beaten them as well, so not really a problem. Although, they did take a point off Hudds.

So more or less the status quo ....Charlton, Narrrrritch, Leeds, illwall have 3 points each deducted.

Huddersfield lose 1 point, they are far enough behind us, not to worry. Colchester played Stockport yet?
    Overall, nothing much changes.

Very sad for their supporters if they go under. Crowds numbers are terrible though. Looks like the FA Cup thumping by Torquay saw the end of all hope of raising a few bob. The Rugby Club owns the ground now and they don't want them there. Looks lke curtains!

Won't be the last that's for sure. 2010 will be make or break for a lot of clubs......

My mate was saying that the areshole who owns them want the football club out and so Sale rugby are training on the pitch the day before football matchdays. It has been unplayable as a result and they had to beg macclesfield to play at their ground the other week apparently.

Was a brief story on this on talksport during the week, whilst portsmouth cardiff and southend have been getting the headlines, stockport could be folded up next week. You can't go into adminstration twice apparently, don't know the laws but could really happen this week, so with chester gone first stockport are next. How would that affect our points and the table as all results would be null and void and deleted?
  • Options
Most teams in the top 6 have beaten Stockport both times as you would imagine. However, I seem to remember Colchester drawing with them a few weeks ago.

Basically if they did fold, then Colchester would be strengthened.
  • Options
No what would happen Adam is they would see this season out but unless they came out of administration during the summer they wouldn't be allowed to start next season. You cannot start 2 consectutive seasons in administration
  • Options
also Millwall are due to play them next saturday at home
  • Options
I think if it did happen Colchester would lose 4 points, Norwich and Millwall 3 points and Huddersfield just 1 point.
    Everyone else 6 points.
    Could be a disaster.
