    Jawbone

Imagine if you can that Mike Leigh or Ken Loach decided to do a boxing film then Jawbone wouldn't be too far away from they would come up with and that is by no means a criticism in fact I really liked this.
This is the story of a former youth boxing champion Jimmy McCabe who, after hitting rock bottom, returns to his childhood boxing club and his old team, gym owner Bill and corner man Eddie but to make ends meet he agree to take an unlicensed fight against someone much bigger and younger than himself.
This film is not so much about boxing but about the struggle against alcoholism. Johnny Harris is brilliant as the troubled fighter and genuinely looks like he can box.
There isn't a bad performance in this film. Ray Winstone and Ian McShane do what they do best and Michael Smiley is great also.
If I has to pick a hole in this film and believe me it's hard , its that the person they got to be Jimmy's opponent didn't look like he knew how to box despite being ripped.
Overall though a very good film.

  • I'll give that a watch off the back of that review Beds. Was unsure when I saw it in Store.

Off to see Baby Driver tonight. Really looking forward to it.
  • Baby Driver - by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead / Hot Fuzz etc.)

It's about a kid called Baby who is an amazing driver, forced to be a wheelman on bank jobs by Kevin Spacey's crime boss.

Music is a major part (Baby has an iPod on at all times) and annoying at first, but makes more sense as the movie goes on. Much like many of the characters (I wanted to punch the kid for the first half hour).

It's really entertaining. The script is watertight, the set ups and pay offs are all logical and the characters are very well fleshed out. The music does bother me a bit (I find it lazy when movies are cut to cool music) but it is fully justified here. It's mostly diagetic (meaning the characters can hear it too).

The real hero is Wright and his editor. The trademark clunk-clip editing (think of when Simon Pegg buys a cornetto) is relentless and makes it zip along at pace.

    I'd give it 8/10.

  • Watched Kajaki and Jawbone over the last 2 nights based on reviews from here.

2 great British films I would have known nothing about had it not been for this thread.
  • My name is Lenny....... a delightful rom-com about Lenny McClean and his differences of opinion with Roy Shaw. ;)
  • Whitney Houston doc is pretty good. It gives a good sense of what her life was like although it didn't get as specific as I'd hoped.

Logan Noir - surprised at exactly how good Logan looks in black and white. Dare I say it even improved it. Sets it completely apartment from the comic book world.

We Steal the old way......... good old british film, with lots recognisable faces off the tv. Not a great story line, just a film to sit down and enjoy. ;)

Saw it a while ago. Bit cliched but I enjoyed it. 5/10 for me
  • Life. Great cast, very well acted but a little bit predictable, but saved by an unhappy ending. Well worth a look 7/10

Small Crimes. Disgraced ex cop Jamie Lannister....I mean Nikolaj Coster Warner, returns home after serving his sentence and lands himself straight back into the mess that put him in jail. Labelled as a black comedy, but I dont remember laughing much. Gritty feel to the film which makes a change from a glossy production. 6/10

    Agreed, it's a bit of fun 6/10
  • I watched a 2015 film the other night that was so shockingly, screamingly awful that I couldn't believe that anyone had had the temerity to put it out. Utterly and laughably amateur, looking for all the world like someone had made it with an iPhone for a dare.

A Hitman in London. Definitely the worst film I've ever seen and by a massive margin. And with actual known actors in it..Eric Roberts, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Jeff Fahey, Dominique Swain.

Then you look at the reviews on IMDB, and every single one has clearly been written by the director or his mum. Watch it, I dare you. And then name me a worse film if you can.

Oh wow, that's a cast of desperados and no mistake. I need this film.
  • Toni Erdmann.

It's a German film that picked up a few awards, and is about an eccentric father's struggle to maintain his relationship with his daughter who is pursuing a brilliant career as a management consultant. It is described as comic, but is not a comedy. It's also a bit longer than necessary, but if you like thoughtful films about real people, and can live with subtitles, it's rewarding. One of those films that stays with you.

As an aside we got it from ITunes and for the first time came across the rental option. So at £5 we took it. But the bloody thing kept buffering, we had to restart it 5-6 times. And they wonder why people download illegally.
  • iBoy. Kind of like a feature length black mirror episode in a way. Wasn't bad, wasn't great.
  • The Mummy - terrible

Wonder Woman - pretty good. Expected it to be rubbish. Very watchable.

The Mummy, lasted 10 minutes before I lost interest.
Wonder Woman, ok but my mind kept drifting off to the Linda Carter days. ;)

Preferred Gal Gadot - good name!

Now THAT'S a good film PA. Never mid your Bagginses. The film is as eccentric as the father (and the daughter) but I really warmed to all of them. Available free on Amazon Prime.

  • Forgot to mention, but we watched Snowden a couple of months ago, and enjoyed that too. One of Oliver Stone's better recent efforts, I think. Interesting to see who gets the sympathetic portrayals (apart from Snowden himself). The Guardian jourmalists (named real-life people) look like people with real integrity in a potentially catastrophic situation for the paper. Glenn Greenwald, a bit less so. Well worth a look.

It's a great film and a worthy interpretation of the story.

Saw it a few months ago. Agree, not great but not bad so a 5/10
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I really unexpectedly enjoyed the first one so I didn't expect the second to be as good as it was. Some really funny scenes involving Racoon, and Baby Groot was brilliant. Loved it and it's a 8/10 for me.

Not a 'latest film' but one of my all time favourites I happened to watch on Sky last night was 'The Prestige'. Featuring Christian Bale (pre Batman), Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, and David Bowie!

Based in Victorian London, two magicians/Illusionists trying to perfect a particular trick.

A fantastic twist at the end of it which I won't spoil; but I strongly recommend!

It's one you have to pay close attention to.

    10/10 (bold claim, I know)

Fantastic film. Caught it once on late night TV and couldn't believe the twist at the end

The prestige wasn't pre-batman, it was post Batman Begins.

    Still a great flick though.

I'd argue The Prestige is Nolan's best film. As much as I enjoy all his stuff, there's a bit too much explaining going on in Inception and Interstellar. Easily in my top ten favourites. His big reveal scenes have become a bit cliched (especially in Interstellar) but this was one of the first times he did it, and it's done so bloody well. And the twist is so in your face it's astonishing nobody can see it coming. But nobody does!

There is some debate around the ending, but I don't think this is the place to do it cos I don't know how to spoiler tag!

I just came out of a British comedy/ horror movie that was surprisingly good, but not allowed to name it for another week. It's about a couple of girls looking to pull a virgin and sacrifice him for whatever reason. It's entertaining enough, and his best mate steals the show (while looking a lot like Jake Gyllenhaal).
