  • Not a 'latest film' but one of my all time favourites I happened to watch on Sky last night was 'The Prestige'. Featuring Christian Bale (pre Batman), Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, and David Bowie!

Based in Victorian London, two magicians/Illusionists trying to perfect a particular trick.

A fantastic twist at the end of it which I won't spoil; but I strongly recommend!

It's one you have to pay close attention to.

    10/10 (bold claim, I know)

I agree - great film. I think it was a Christopher Nolan one -he's done some other good films, Momento being one of them.

another fave of mine that is not that well known is The Heist - with Gene Hackman & Danny DeVito.

I'd argue The Prestige is Nolan's best film. As much as I enjoy all his stuff, there's a bit too much explaining going on in Inception and Interstellar. Easily in my top ten favourites. His big reveal scenes have become a bit cliched (especially in Interstellar) but this was one of the first times he did it, and it's done so bloody well. And the twist is so in your face it's astonishing nobody can see it coming. But nobody does!

There is some debate around the ending, but I don't think this is the place to do it cos I don't know how to spoiler tag!

I just came out of a British comedy/ horror movie that was surprisingly good, but not allowed to name it for another week. It's about a couple of girls looking to pull a virgin and sacrifice him for whatever reason. It's entertaining enough, and his best mate steals the show (while looking a lot like Jake Gyllenhaal).

@JiMMy 85 you're not telling me you like THAT film. I thought it was terrible and the Dexter Fletcher cameo truly horrendous. Passed on it. That bad :-P
  • Ha that's fair @supaclive, I was quite forgiving. It was no Severence but I think the fake Jake won me over.

Victim to assassin: 'Won't you at least hear my last words?'

Assassin to victim: 'I already did'.

    Great film.

The Prestige as has been said is in my view a classic with a decent Bowie appearance amongst a stellar cast.

Just watched it, brilliant film. Enjoyed every minute of it.

Wow. Never heard of The Prestige but I'll make an effort to see it now.
Also not new, but I finally caught Inception last week. Wonderful movie, and I 've watched it three times now.
  • Nolan is a genius. Inception is better than the prestige just because it continually makes me think and when I do I remind myself it's come from a mans head onto the screen. I can't wait till Dunkirk is released.
  • Watching the Zookeepers wife now, looks promising. Dunkirk is one that I want to see.

Café de Flore is on iplayer at the moment.
It's in French and needs a bit of effort and concentration, but it's a truly lovely film. Watch it with your Mrs and earn brownie points for showing your sensitive side.
  • Okay, which do I go and see tonight?
    Baywatch
    Guardians of the Galaxy
    Wonder Woman
    Pirates of the Caribbean:
    Transformers:

Baywatch No. Just don't. Mildly funny, mostly shit.
Guardians of the Galaxy - decent but still just another marvel movie.
Wonder Woman - again decent, best DC movie so far. Not a classic but people like it for not being shit.
    Pirates of the Caribbean: Woeful.
Transformers: I've heard it be called "the worst blockbuster movie ever made"

  • Wonder Woman it is.

  • Wonder Woman is getting rave rebiews. I just ordered The Presige on the back of comments on this thread. My opinion will follow in late july when I watch it.

    Teetotal. Until Marathon day anyway!
  • Wonder Woman is decent and it's great from a Hollywood/ feminine perspective, but it's not a classic by any means. If you like Marvel stuff, Guardians is marginally better, probably because it made me laugh out loud half a dozen times (the Poppins joke was brilliant).

  • Watched The Prestige thanks to the praise here, great film. Usually buy my mum some dvds for birthday/xmas (amongst other things!) so just ordered this one.

Daughter made me watch Pirates, oh lord, I know I've missed about 3 of these but this was dog poo and I'm pretty sure most of the actors knew that as they filmed it...
  • Not sure why Wonder Woman has got so many rave reviews? I didn't see anything special about it apart from the fact that the leading role was a female?
  • Wonder Woman was the choice made, I am certain I watched a Marvel film.
It was not dark, not gritty, the CGI didn't look great and the acting of the enemies, well that was pathetic.

But I did still enjoy it, Gal Gadot for me was perfect for the role, The movie was just not in same class as DC normally. I felt they'd sold out to the 'Marvel' way.

That's true, that's definitely true. I just don't think we agree in the context here... My all time worst comic book movies:
    1. Suicide Squad
    2. Batman V Superman
    3. Spawn
    4. Man of Steel
    5. Blade 3
    6. X-Men Apocalypse
    7. Ghost Rider
    8 Amazing Spider-Man 2
    9. Amazing Spider-Man 1
    10. The Shadow

Now you have :) i didnt mind it
  • I liked suicide squad, looked at it as its own film in its own universe. The problems came towards the end... A few fit birds in it though...
  • I'd seen The Prestige but after all the comments on here I thought I'd give it another go. It is a very good clever film.
