I was thinking about the fouls in the box thing the other day and undoubtedly they are a little less harsh with fouls in the box, and I think I'm generally pretty ok with it. We'd probably have a ridiculous amount of penalties if they weren't, or have defenders terrified to make contact with a forward in the box. Obviously this 'leeway' is incredibly arbitrary and probably leads to some inevitable inconsistency, but I'm happy enough for it to be there.
The ref was just poor. Didn't have to give a yellow so early, could wait till the player goes off on a stretcher and when it was obvious he wasn't taking a leaf out of Nicky Baileys book of acting he'd have a fairly good idea that there was bad contact even if he didn’t see it at real time. The Bailey and Burton booking were a joke and he missed the Sodje block, got other decisions wrong both ways.
If they use the video technology days later after the incident surely the fourth official can have a monitor solely for those 50/50 decisions and then he can advice the ref. The fourth official is part of the match day officials and I think should be included. Surely his role isn't just to hold the board up and to tell the managers to get back in the technical area.
Also the fourth official is a more static official compared to the ref and his assistants who are constantly on the move perhaps he has a different view
Perhaps if the fourth official is consulted more the game will be less about the ref and more about the game of football

The ref could choose to ask him if he's not sure about something, and each side could be given one challenge each half, a bit like in tennis. If you challenge and the rewatch shows you were right you get another challenge; if it shows you were wrong then you have to put up and shut up for the rest of the half. It'd mean an increase in stoppage time, but hopefully not too much.

Who decides when he is consulted?
