COWS!

edited May 2010 in Not Sports Related
just went out to walk the dog up the woods with the wife and kids, for the record im wearing a bright red england world cup bomber jacket. the route we normally take there are some cows that spend the summer months in one of the fields and we had been told how friendly they are and that they will just walk away when you go near them, we had seen this for ourselves following being told this so had no problem with them but were advised to keep the dog on the lead as it frightens the cows.

anyway today we went on a different walk and came to a field we hadnt walked through before, we go over the sty and start walking through the field, about halfway (2 or 3 mins later) we notice about a dozen cows grazing about 100 yards to our left, we wernt really too concerned after what we had been previously been told so carried on and as we did we notice that they seem to be gathering into a more formidable group and moving in the same direction as us. I said to the wife jokingly if anything happens then to run back to the gate which is still just about within reach. all of a sudden the cows gather momentum changing direction and their trot has now turned into a canter, i turned to my wife and said "leg it back to the gate", i grabbed my son and we ran back for dear life, my daughter (obviously the wise one) had taken off a few seconds earlier and was almost out of sight. We were running back even outpacing the dog, every time i looked back the milk machines were getting closer and closer, about 10 yards to go and it had turned into a stampede you could hear them pounding up behind us, i hurled myself over the sty, dragged my wife over and as we turned round there they were....looking at us the way they do, jesus that got the heartrate going, my wife said she was nearly wetting herself nervously laughing as we running for dear life.

either they felt threatened by the dog or maybe they just wanted to play with us but when we were walking back i wondered if cows had the same mentality as bulls and if the red jacket was anything to do with it

where was the camera when i needed it, it would have been superb youv been framed stuff. been laughing about it for about 2 hours now :-)

  • thye red thing is just a myth bulls are attracted to movement not colour also their coulr sight is not in the same spectrum as ours, i reckon you just got mistaken for someone who was going to feed them, you had a close escape i reckon when they get going nt much can stop them
  • There has genuinely been a couple of incidents in recent years where people have been killed by 'stampeding' cows. Consider it a near death experience!
  • they seemed quite friendly when there was an iron gate between us

i dont think they get aggresive i may be wrong but they are big stoopid inquisitive beasts who 99 times out of 100 just want to eat and if you are in their field they pressume you are going to feed them, i had a bull run at me whilst walking in a cattle mart that scared the poop out of me i had to jump on a wall and get out the way quick time the flipping thing was raging

It was the dog....almost 100% certain....did they have any calves by the way...that 'always' makes them super spooky....although certain herd's (though by no means all) with calves or not, will always see off a dog or any human accompanying one, you're just part of a dog pack to them.
Best advice is if you have a dog with you (on a lead or not), is don't go into a field of cows, heffers or bulls under any circumstances.
There have been a number of unfortunate deaths over the years, indeed far more than us townies realise....I don't wish to alarm you choice but I have to say you were extremly lucky, once they decide they're going to rush you they stop for nothing................ and I do mean nothing.

    Woman killed by Cows

18 People killed in the last 8 years apparently!
  • Didn't you ever watch 'Rawhide' ? Rowdy only had to drop a plate and they'd go charging off somewhere!
  • This happened to me and my family when I was a nipper, they surrounded us. Ever since I've had a fear of them!
  • My elder brother Jim was a stockman in the Cotswolds (where he still lives), for some years....he has had a few narrow escapes....not all herds react the same it's simply best to respect them...they aren't always the silly docile creatures we like to think of.
  • i no somebody who knocked a cow out once.

    Mooooooooooooooooooooo!!
  • This has happened to me before when working in a field full of them - I was walking away from them and they were about 100 yards away but because they had Calves with them they were being very protective. Very scary experience and it's amazing how fast they can bloody run!

Also once got surrounded by a herd of them (including a Bull) when doing some work next to a dead oil well in Canada. Was scary at the time, but I laugh looking back now - I was knelt on the ground frantically trying to take a groundwater sample from the well while the 6'7" ex Basketball player I was working with tried to fend them off with a big stick.

I used to think they were utterly harmless, but I'm quite wary of them now especially if they have calves.
  • Sounds like the Cow Days episode of South Park.

i thought they looked quite nice when they were on the right side of the gate, ones nose was even dribbling and they were sniffing baileys nose quite happily and he was returning the placid gesture, no calfs were present.

also do different coloured ones behave differently. the black one was the leader backed up by a white one. the seemingly nicer ones were brown
  • [cite]Posted By: windscreen[/cite]Any cows like any dogs will attack if threatened, although in saying this Friesians (black & white) would rather run away.

Don't you believe it....'never' count on that.
  • Ah, the old dribbling nose trick eh? Fools humans everytime that does!
  • im starting to feel we had a lucky escape....

Like I said there are some herds (we're talking about cows here) who will charge at dogs and their owners whether they have calves or not...it largely depends on the herd matriarchs character....if she's a faisty old girl (which she often is), she'll take the others into battle no messing.
Yes, it's true Fresians are generaly more placid with humans but when it comes to dogs I'd say that definately isn't the case.....just don't take the chance.

would it be worth putting one in charge (no pun intended) of the team for the play offs maybe?
  • I find that quite shocking really. I've never had a problem with them before. Well the ones on my uncles farm are placid old beasts and I spent my childhood quite happily rounding them up for milking. Now you have me worried - i might be a bit more wary in future.
  • Gills fans taking out their relegation frustration!
  • Many years ago when I was a kid me my mate and his dad were "threatened" by a load of cows in fields near the waterways in Hythe. We'd been doing a spot of fishing and were on our way back. A small herd of them came after us and only a lot of shouting and yelling stopped them running at us. Pretty scary weird stuff. It was like a scene from "The Birds". Only with cows.;-)
  • Bulls dont respond to red, thats a myth.
