ive had one for yonks major downfall is no digi tv tuner, doh... previous price wasn't justifiabe as a result but that's Apple i guess
one cool feature, if you hook up your pc in your living room to your tv as I do, you can sync your itunes between both devices over the air/wire, but also play music simultaneously using the apple tv as a slave, and thereby piping same music around the house

Won't be able to sync with new one as there's no hard drive! Personally the old ones are better, you can put a card off eBay in them which will allow them to stream Full HD (when they're hacked)
[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]720 is hd last time i checked.
obvs not 1080 quality but will still be great.
Alright, if you want to get picky, SHD (for 'Superduper') )
Thing is, that non-HD remark was a bit disingenuous anyway - most broadband connections in the UK haven't a prayer of holding up under a 1080 stream. The point is, this is a crippling of an already crap product - yet appletards will still buy it in droves.
I could be wrong but 720p/1080i which I assume is what the apple tv streams at is as good as a lot of skyhd content and indeed a lot of blu ray, and as not everyone will have full/true hd anyway, it may not be a big deal. Bit daft that the new ones aren't 1080p tho like the ps3 is.
what does it do that your PC doesn't?
your pc may not have hdmi output unless its a media centre so you can't hook it up easily to a big telly
it is also far smaller than most PCs, particularly the newer version
So almost four years down the line after actually buying a first gen apple tv as it had a hard drive I've decided to sell it and will either get a third gen apple tv or possibly a roku 3.
Has anyone got the roku and could recommend it or shall I stick with kind of what I know and get the apple tv and hack it?
If you get an Apple TV and you've already got other Apple stuff (iPhone, iPad, iTunes) you can stream the other items' content to your TV via the Apple TV. Don't think you can do that with the Roku (happy to be corrected). If you are going for the Apple, I heard on a podcast that advances in Apple TV are coming, however this may be just updated software so I'd recommend doing a bit of research on that to see if a new one is just around the corner.
Are these boxes essentially similar to the one that Talktalk is now giving away free to customers? That is youview plus 30min delay plus 7-day catch-up plus streaming (but no hard drive). The Talktalk box has a bit of a quirky menu but the streaming works well.
I mainly want it for netflix but the roku also allows you to plug a USB memory stick in the side and watch films off that. I've got quite a lot of films on a hard drive so that appeals to me.
I've got a popcorn hour with a 1Tb hard drive. This has done everything I've needed it to and can watch all sorts of film formats on it. Had mine for about 4 years now. Best bit of electronic kit other than my canon 5D2 I've ever owned
I have a jailbroken Apple TV 2 which i can watch films wireless from my NAS or from other apple devices. I can also use it to stream various football games and films through 3rd party apps and it is tiny - you can watch 3d through it as well although it is only 720
I gather that 2nd Generation Apple TVs are very easy to hack, giving you access to all sorts of TV. According to the mac specialist in Currys, at least! Mine is gathering dust somewhere, might put it on eBay.
EDIT: Just saw Reading Addick's post. Now I'm definitely dusting it off...

Just get a dodgy sky card for fifty quid mate. All the channels free - sport, films etc.

means never having to go to blockbuster again but seeing as they are going bust thats no bad thing
They 'slashed' the price and made it smaller by removing the hard drive.
The most amazing thing is that most of them know they're being conned - they even seem to actively enjoy the fact.
should be called 'apple tarts'....... up for anything, just haggling over the price!
