Is today the day I get made redundant?

edited October 2010 in Not Sports Related
A few weeks ago, it was announced that 10 percent of staff in my bank would be made redundant. I made it threw the last round and thought I'd have no probs with this one. But, last night it was announced that everyone would be told today and I am now crapping myself. We've been told that out of the 100 people in my department, 16 will be going and I can't help to think that i'll be one of them. Just wanna get today over with.

  • Terrible position to be in. Good luck.
  • Fingers crossed the odds are in your favour but gonna be a shitter of a day
If they have any decency it'll all be sorted very early on today so as not to prolong the agony

    Good Luck

    .
  • Seriously best of luck. It is a horrible financial time but hopefully they'll hold onto you especially with the fact you have to put up with being a cafc fan too.

Hopefully they'll tell you all as your shift starts that way if you are to be made redundant you can say you are too distressed to stay in the office/bank today and get the search started.
  • I've been there mate!

    Good luck!
  • The first thing to remember is that you cannot do anything to change their decision at this stage, therefore stay calm and start thinking about the action you will take if the worst happens. I was made redundant in March at the age of 72. I immediately updated my CV and got to all the Agencies that I could find using the internet, local papers and such as Yellow Pages. Don't wait for jobs to be advertised, be pro-active. Start drawing up a list of anyone you know socially and in business, and make them aware of your availability. Think about local companies who you might like to work for, don't restrict yourself to Banks, use your background as a weapon for jobs in Accounts departments etc. Smarten yourself up, do your homework on companies you are going to speak to, always wear a smile. I started work again in May, make your own luck, I wish you well.
  • all the best mate, fingers crossed.

Some good pointers from Granpa there. Another option is to start up your own business, which is what I did - it's high risk and at the moment all I am doing is covering costs.

If the worst does happen, let me know because I know a recruitment consultant who may be able to help.

    Whatever happens, good luck.
  • Oh mate best of luck xx
  • Best of luck mate.....

It may sound mercenary - but if you have any stuff on your work PC that might be useful in your future endeavours you might want to get than on to a usb memory stick ASAP. Some companies will escort you straight off the premises and not allow you back to your PC before placing you on garden leave so if theres anything you might want/need I suggest you get your hands on it

    PS - good luck
  • Best of luck
  • Good luck, this happened to me just over a year ago, its a terrible experience.
  • good luck m8

I know this is off topic but fair play to you mate, most people would've had enough and put their feet up at your age.
  • good luck Blinkant. I too work in Banking and was told in May that my position was under threat. Now looks like I'll be out on 31st December (Happy New Year !!). In my case it's the suspense that kills you. Some good suggestions here especailly with reagrd to getting stuff on a memory stick or emailing it home just in case. Hope you are ok though. Good advice from Grandpa although, if you are 72, my advice would be to retire and put your feet up !!
  • Good luck Blinkant. Been there myself, not a nice place.
  • Thanks for the advice guys. My Dad worked into his eighties and I guess I take after him. I can't stop the brain working yet and I love to wake up to a challenge. I am sure that if I did retire now I would head for dementure, so many retire from an active life and don't last very long. At the moment I do Telemarketing, but believe it or not I still have plans to write a series of plays for TV. I guess the guys in the white coats will come for me before too long. No fool like an old fool !
  • Number 1: Good luck today.
Number 2: Be very careful what you take off your PC - you could end up getting sacked & sent packing without a payoff.
  • Good luck - having been there I know how horrible this must be for you right now.

Good luck to you. I hope everything works out right for you (but that *might not* mean you keeping your job - moving on might end up being the best possible thing for you).

It's a fraught, frustrating, horrible position to be in. I know - it's happened to me six times, so far...
  • Good luck.
I have been in banking all my life and I can tell you that the market is picking up.
After temping for last 3 years I have to get a perm role as got first littlun due next month.

There are definitely more roles out there than earlier this year.
Get your cv on E financial Services and City Jobs but also send to agencies directly.
I had to take first role offered although not what I really wanted as needed that security with baby on way but will be looking again in Jan for a more desirable role.
  • oh - and dont work with Chizz !!!
  • Good luck Blinkant and Large, everything crossed for you. Hope it works out okay.
  • Well its all over and thankfully, I still have a job. Was really difficult seeing a few of my mates leave and quite upsetting.

    Thanks for the luck guys.
  • great news for you though obviously sad for those going.

So now we know Blinkant is safe can anyone beat Chizz's 6 redundancies.

I've had two. One voluntary before I went self employed and one which back fired badly on the twot of an MD who did it to me when I got a better paid job with one of our clients two days later - boy was he unhappy. Even refused to give me a reference and wouldn't say goodbye.
  • well, pleased for you but as you say not so great for some mates/colleagues. Here we are shredding nearly 50% of our staff over a three year period. Most that have gone so far have been here 20 years plus. Not great seeing people you have worked with for that long leaving. Moral here is rock bottom.
  • what bank by the way Blinkant ?
  • Only once, that was "voluntary". (I didn't think so) and that was one to many.
Always feel for people with the threat of losing thier jobs, its a bloody awful thing to happen.
Unless you are planning to have a long holiday around the world like a couple of my friends did a few years back.
  • Good news Blinkant
