Memories of Luton

edited November 2010 in General Charlton
Queensland Addick mentioned our heavy losses to Luton in the past and yes I too was present for the 7-1 drubbing away and the 5-1 reverse at home .
I remember travelling to Luton on the back of a good run and we were completely walloped ..Lil fucillo(it may have been Ricky Hill) hit a shot from about 35 yards that left Jeff Wood rooted to the spot ,they also scored a goal from a free kick routine/through our wall ( almost walked the ball into the net ).the pre match drinks in the little social club underneath the old stand were the highlight ...we were well and truly mullered ! the drive home with my LAC Rovers "oppos" was very dispiriting ....we gave them Paul Walsh , Paul Elliot and Matt Tees ...we got "Killer " ....
Luton had a damn good side then managed by Harry Haslam ...

The 5-1 at Home was demoralising....didnt they go on to Promotion? 7-1 was just plain embarrasing.....why cant we dish those scorelines out to the opposition....
  • Options
Away - The team having a new shirt sponsor (Viglen) and Garry Nelson telling our fans behind the goal that he had no idea who they were either.

Home - The great Paulo Di Canio single handedly sparking a fightback / penalty shoot-out, that became the catalyst for a brilliant season.

Yes I was at the 7-1. Went to Luton by train, the police "escorted" us to and from the ground and tried to keep us away from the pubs. As far as the game was concerned Luton were just far better that day.

Back in the days of "HOME" fans only Luton games in the late 80's i think..i managed to get hold of a home season ticket or credit card thingy for one of our games at Kenilworth Road.

I seem to recall there were quite a few Charlton in the end i was situated.

I was one of them . It was home fans only and i got in with a Luton Town supporting friend behind the goal. Wish i hadnt. Terrible day.

Only been there once, without doubt the worst away end I've ever been in! We also lost in extra time in a League cup game.

was the meeting pub the brewery tap?

remember everyone getting tickets except me as i had been promised comps.
the comps didn't turn up and i had to give a steward a fiver to let me in for the 2nd half.

also 1 year remember persuading a luton fan to 'sign me in' as his guest.
they let me pay for the ticket, get through the turnstyle before taking me to a police room to have my mugshot taken. the luton fan had his s/t confiscated.
a few years later, imagine how proud my dad was when he worked at the valley to find i was on some known hoolies list.

Went there on a Junior Reds trip at the time of the away fan ban. Main memory is Ben Tegg banging on the back of the stand to lead the singing amongst our motley crew of little herberts, but I'm pretty sure we lost though.

The 4-4 cup game in 2003, only a few days before the Lisbie Liverpool game.

We started awfully but Parker and then Di Canio dragged us back into it.
McSheffrey scored a blinder for them.
Campbell Ryce came on and set up Di Canios third, thought we had unearthed a talent on the wing.
Pens seemed to go on for ages- 8-7 I think before their player's was saved by Deano.

think we had squad numbers on our shirts for the first time and thought i pulled a fast one on the spread bookies buying the shirt numbers at 22ish (which is what it would have been for a standard 1-11 match) ..... justice was done and as usual i lost the bet

They were probably doing it for your own good. Nothing in Luton should be approached without wearing plastic gloves, a gasmask and a condom. It is the absolute arsehole of the world.

As someone who has lived in Bedfordshire for 9 years (without ever being tempted to visit the cesspit) I feel I have the right to pass this totally objective comment. And if the Oak Road stand wasn't the worst in the league (when they were) I can't imagine which one I've missed

The pub did a large trade in 'pub meals'. After ordering you were given a ticket and called over the PA system to collect your food when it was ready.

Some wag managed to get on the mic and announce "would Stan Flashman please come to the bar"

For those who don't know the infamous Stan, he was a well known ticket tout, google him!

Was at the 7 - 1. Got caught in amongst Luton fans walking through the town after the game. Ended up clapping anti Charlton songs and threatening to do damage. About 70 Luton running through the high street with me in the middle red and white scarf tucked under the coat. Can still feel the fear !!

    yeah i think so

I went to most away ganes then and the rumour on the away terraces was that you could buy tickets in the Brewery Tap and that's where I got my plastic entry ticket thing. I seem to recall that the bloke selling them said they were given out to staff at the factory where he worked. He collected them up and sold them on to whoever wanted them. Makes you wonder how Luton went bust?

I was at Luton in 89 when we got beat 5-2!

About a dozen of us got in as the people I was with were postmen from Woolwich who knew postmen from Luton I think?

There were other Charlton scatted all over the ground as when we scored you could hear a faint cheer from 3 sides of the ground!

First match I went to watch Charlton at Luton was the opening match 81/82 season. We had just been promoted from the old Third Division and were outplayed by a very good Luton team. One of the ugliest grounds I have ever visited and my recollection of it is the surrounding narrow streets full of little houses reeking with a strong smell of curry.

Horrible place with nasty supporters. Hope to see them drop back down to non-league asap. Only been there once in the early 90's. Went on my own and before the game went to the away entrance thinking it was "pay on turnstiles" only to be told you had to purchase tickets from box office which was situated at the other end of the stadium. On one side of the ground there's no road, just a walk-way. Whilst walking up there, although plenty of people about i got jumped by 4 of their thugs, floored with a punch to the back of the head. A few kicks launched at me littered with toilet mouth threats. Now i aint no coward but i aint stupid either. i just stayed down and they quickly lost interest when they realised they weren't gonna get a scrap out of me. Don't even know why i was singled out as i wasn't wearing any colours or anything to signify i was charlton.

My sister (who is a copper in plumstead) told me the other day that their "intelligence" (sic) is more concerned with the luton match than they were when we played the spanners last season, so expect a high police presence on saturday.

Anyone recall which game at kenilworth road, probably 70s, there was constant fighting on the terrace? One of my earliest away games but in the home end as a 9/10/11 year old watching on. From the list JT has posted, must have been one of 1-7, 0-2 or 1-1?

Was Sam Bartram manager of Luton?

I was at the 5-2 game. We needed to win as we were in relegation trouble and think we were 4-0 down at half time. One was a Walshie o.g. My brother and I got tickets through a mate's mate who was a Luton fan and we had to buy the knob a pint after the game to say thanks. Grim night, grimmer place.

Loads of Charlton in the ground though, which at least meant it was a game still talked about.

My other memory from when Luton banned away fans was when they played Tottenham and they had about 5,000 fans in the ground. Ridiculous decision to go along with the electronic turnstiles and plastic pitch.

I remember that they turned up mob handed last time we played them.

Also remember getting into their ground back in the 80's when the ban was on. Lost 1-0.
