I think one of the key things today was that the fans did not get on the players backs whenever a pass went astray. No fear and little anxiety enabled them toplay and that is something they will be able to build on.
[cite]Posted By: ShootersHillGuru[/cite]Forgot to say how disappointed I was with the size of the crowd. Thought someone said that 18,800 had been sold yesterday ?
Yeh the ticket office bloke told me that yesterday, maybe his abacus wasnt working properly, dissapointed with the attendence as well
Agree Plymouth didn't offer much (Peter Reid's claim that they were the better side is ludicrous, apart from the first 15 mins of second half).
But I thought we were really good. Still work to be done, of course. But it was so obvious that Powell has told them to play football and the hoofball of the old regime is now a thing of the past. There were a couple of ocassions when you could see Doherty was about to hoof it up to Anyinsah before he remembered just in time, ''oh yes, the new gaffer has told us we don't do that anymore'' - and he made a pass instead.
Waggy was excellent playing behind Anyinsah. I like him there rather than wide because he's in the game so much more. And he is lightning. There aren't many would have had the pace to beat the keeper to Seip's back pass. Must have been that now mythical and knackering training session on Tuesday!
McOxo definitely man of the match. I though he was quite superb in every department, defending, getting forward and crossing, winning the ball in midfield. First time he has really impressed me - and he did it in spades.
Although the crowd was smaller than I had hoped and there still wasn't much noise from the west stand, the atmosphere was so different.
The niggly, sour, resentment of the past couple of seasons was gone. There were smiles everywhere and mistakes were tolerated with good humour - even Francis, who still committed a number of howlers.
In fact, if anything the crowd was tolerant to a fault. Our set pieces from free kicks and most of the corners were awful and deserved a riollicking. Consistently hit straight at their keeper and then when Reid came on as a sub and muscled Francis off taking a freekick - and then did exactly the same thing, it was beyond a joke. But it was the only aspect of our play that was really poor, so there was forgiveness and tolerance all round.
Great start. A shame the first win in two months still leaves out of the top six. But we'll take it gratefully as a a defeat would have put Plymouth above us. I reckon we now need 42 pts from the remaining 22 games for the play-offs. THat this target is now down to under two points required per game is progress and I'm confident Powell will build on the plusses from today and work hard in training on rectifying the negatives, especially the profligate waste of set-pieces.
Thought we did ok today but were fortunate that Seip made a terrible back pass that let Waggy in as up until then I didn't think we'd score. Ecclestone's goal was quality for the effort and skill that went into it. Didn't notice a huge difference from Parky but that will take time. Still think we're 4 decent players from a strong squad. Main thing was 3 points.
Thought Peter Reid was spot on in saying that if Parky was in charge, the fans would have been booing after 20 minutes.
For any one not there one of the most humorous parts of the afternoon was when the referee came off injured and was serenaded by the North Stand with "You're not fit to referee!"
Thought Peter Reid was spot on in saying that if Parky was in charge, the fans would have been booing after 20 minutes.
May be if we had been playing hoofball. But I can't think of a single ball in the first 20 mins that was hoofed pointessly in the vague direction of Anyinsah. We got the ball on the ground and tried to play through the midfield and to thread balls in to feet. It didn't alway work and a few passes went astray. But iIf the team had tried to play properly like that that under the last manager, nobody would have booed.
Sort of first half performance that would have been met with indifference - if probably not some booing - a few weeks ago, but all in all a deserved win.
Positive substitutions, and a great cameo from Eccleston - he could hopefully make a difference.
I don't get what people's issues are with the first half... from my point of view we were patient, considered, retained possession well, consciously avoided slinging in crosses to nobody or hoofing the ball and ultimately carved out the best chance of the half through Wagstaff.
I thought we looked organized and patient, need to up the quality in the final third though. waggy and Anyinsah worked well. Thought McCormack did well although he could have crossed it a few times in the first half but chose a more negative ball. His chase back to win the ball was instrumental in Ecclestones goal and should not be overlooked.
Oh and Doc was lucky to get away with that challenge in the first half, from my viewpoint he was nowhere near the ball
The attitude seemed different today, maybe a little more self belief, more persistance all across the team....or maybe Rose tinted glasses? Whatever, once we got the fortunate first we didn't look in danger and Ecclestone looks very quick and his finish was sharp. Seeing Powell coming off you could see it meant so much to him. It won't be so charged every week, but you know he is going to really feel every result and it feels very much like it's one of us in charge.
I want it to work out well almost as much for him as for the club. Very happy tonight!
Average very average I thought the players would be more fired up with a new manager. Good result though against a very poor team. Still not convinced we have a team worthy of going up
[cite]Posted By: cfgs[/cite]from my viewpoint he was nowhere near the ball
I was roughly level in the West Stand it was slow and clumsy but thought he got the ball then followed through
ok will trust your better view

A very average side who have recently been on a very good run

MacronateCommentTime12 minutes ago quote# 40 Not knocking Francis as I thought he did ok today but surely we have someone who is a better dead ball taker than him.
Francis featured in the 100 questions piece in the prog and apparently watches a lot of Beckham taking free kicks and crosses on DVD............they have obviously worked a treat then!!!!!!!! This was my first match back since being in Australia for a month and this was an improvement. Great goals from Waggy and Ecclestone. And it was good to see us not lumping the ball down the pitch and playing some neat passes. And well done to the north stand upper for the we're gonna bounce in a minute chant....loved it! Felt like the good old days today........Waggy probably my man of the match.
I think we would've lost that game under Parky. As it was it was very close but Parky would never have played Wagstaff down the middle, nor would he have put MacCormack wide right, nor would he have got Elliott to send his GK's to MacCormack who I agree was excellent. Great to see that we tried to play a bit more football than we have done of late.
I was disappointed with the attendance and also with the atmosphere. Sat in the upper West for the first time since the Prem years and it was seriously dull up there. Perhaps some regular West Uppers can comment if this is normal? Also at £25 for League One football I wonder if Charlton are some way off their optimum price here - these are topics for another thread of course....

Bang on
Yup. 0-0 at half time is not the end of the world. You can win games in the 2nd half as well.
Miles better than what I've seen at home in terms of not hoofing it for a long time.
Biggest improvement today was the atmosphere. Players made mistakes at times but there was nothing more than the usual sigh. No booing or abuse, felt very different in that the crowd weren't so tense and there was no anger.
Was pleased to see us play some decent football, clearly what Peacock and Matthew and in the last week Powell have been trying to encourage. I agree with others that we were patient and that was good to see.
Good finish from Eccleston, little bit of luck to get the ball back but he didn't really have another option apart from running at the defenders. Still not seen enough of him but seems to be something different to what we have, and another pacey option up front will definitely be useful.
In the last few games Wagstaff has shown he's a decent option up front or just behind the striker.
This is not yet Powell's team, same 11 and formation as it was v Spurs and Sheff Wed, It'll be interesting to see how he sets up the team as the season goes on. Good start but room for improvement, set pieces in particular. A good signing or two especially in midfield could really improve this team.
I'd much rather pick up a few 1-0's (though it was 2-0 today) than get 2-1's, 3-2's etc. we need to start regularly keeping clean sheets and that allows the attacking players to approach the game sensibly as we did in the first hour or so. When you are chasing the game or getting dragged into a 100mph end to end game it becomes a lot easier to start lumping the ball.
Thought we done well in the first half kept the ball well without needlessly giving it away by lumping it up to a lone striker. Also thought in that first half that waggy was immense, he ran every inch of that pitch and never gave up on anything which is how he got his goal. Dailly looked good at the back after missing a couple of early headers, Semedo was strong in the middle too. Didn't think anyone had a bad game to be honest and the crowd although much smaller than i thought it would be were very good (especially upper north). Ecclestone done well in his first home game and looks like he might do some damage bags of pace (but i'd already said about that) and a good eye for goal. Could be a great little signing despite being a young loanee, some of them do work hard.
So glad we got the 3 points, but at ht if Parky was charge then the boos from the Covered end would have been loud and clear. Thank god we have a new boss.
Professional performance. A welcome tendency to keep the ball on the deck and try to play football.
Waggy's goal came at the right time and was a fitting reward for his general hard work and persistence. Prior to that I'd felt the midfield had gone off the boil and were letting Plymouth into it too much. The goal seemed to perk everybody up though. I hope Jacko's injury is not too serious as we look more solid with him out there.
Chris' substitutions were sensible and fortunately they worked for him especially Eccleston.
One swallow doesn't make a summer and all that but the home form has been woeful and we got the 3 points we needed.
I knew he wouldn't be able to resist the tunnel completely!

Oi! I had money on 3-2!
I thought it was a better all-round performance from the lads, but we've a way to go yet.
Brilliant result, and I must say what a crowd today, we was brilliant (mostly in 2nd half) I walked away from The Valley with such a smile and felt so proud today. A happy night for me :-)
Comments
Both goals taken really well. Wagstaff mom for me as never stopped running.
FT at the Valley with CP punching the air is the happiest Ive felt at the Valley for yonks. Proper Roy of the Rovers fairytale stuff.
Onwards and upwards
Yeh the ticket office bloke told me that yesterday, maybe his abacus wasnt working properly, dissapointed with the attendence as well
Great start by SCP, even Francis seemed to improve and Abbot won a header!
Onwards and upwards.
Eccleston debut goal Great composure and looked as if it was going in even if it didn't get the slight deflection.
When we did pass it on the floor we looked good. More please.
Don't agree about McCormack. Stop gap at right midfield imo. Need a player who knows the position if Wagstaff is not played there.
Couldn't pick a MOM. Not a lot in the game until Waggy scored.
Nice to see us not sit on the 1-0 for once. Decent subs by CP.

Also the attendance, surely there was more there than given out !
