The first 60 minutes was a professional performance if 'professional' doesn't need to include an iota of entertainment. I thought the only way anyone was going to score was through some egregious error and so it proved to be. Second goal was class tho and we clearly deserved the win in the end. Cautious hope for the future but I think it will take another season. I don't think we are as good as last year - certainly no better.
1st half wasn't bad , thought they all looked a bit tentative until Waggy scored , set pieces where awful as usual , quite surprised the north stand didn't pipe up with the old day dream believer song for peter reid . Onwards and upwards .
Deserved win after finally getting ahead. Couldn't see a goal coming up until then. Semedo MOM by a long way for me, good performances by Waggy & McCormack. Much improved on some recent performances, just hope it continues to do so!
Very amusing abuse from Ollie when the Plymouth full back / centre half was down. Could hear him from a mile away!
[cite]Posted By: shirty5[/cite]So glad we got the 3 points, but at ht if Parky was charge then the boos from the Covered end would have been loud and clear. Thank god we have a new boss.
Yes thank God for Chris Powell. But I do wish people would stop saying ''under Parkinson people would have been booing''.
It's only true because we would have played that game quite differently under Parkinson. We would have hoofed it long all afternoon.
Yes, there was a huge swell of goodwill to CP and rightly so. But the key thing today was that even when we couldn't find a way through in the first half , we did not resort to hoofing it. The crowd responded to that and were consequently as patient as our play was.
If they see the team trying to play decent foootball, they will be tolerant of the odd mistake - as they were today.
There's no doubt in my mind that CP has told them to cut out hoofing it. There were at least two ocassions today when Doherty shaped up to hit it long and aimlessly - and then you saw him check himself , and he played a pass instead.
Additionally, if you only use the long ball as an occassional tactic, there is always the chance that you take the defence by surprise and catch them off-guard. We hardly used it at all today - but on the second ocassion we did just before the end of the first-half, it caused needless panic in their defence and they conceded us a soft corner.
Actually thought the covered end were the MOM today. Great atmosphrere to keep the CP love in going, even though the players were more of less playing the same old crap in the first half. To be fair you can tell that CP & DM have told them to pass the ball around, although most of it was in our half. Was watching their No 4 as he has been mentioned as a transfer target. Quite good but not great. Thought Waggy was the one to make things happen with his speed and direct style. Pity he didn't take his 1st half chance when he almost chipped the goalie. Anyjoe played well but somehow missed an open goal with his head. 2nd haf was better once we scored as confidence surged. I suppose they had to attack more. They are all good in training. It's all about confidence really. Innit.
I honestly failed to see a marked difference in our play today compared to any other home games we have seen this season. Very few chances created (how many saves did their keeper make?), very little cutting edge and very little invention.
PA were not very good and we took advantage of some sloppy defending from our ex-loanee. Still, it's 3 points and let's move on but we need to play much better than we we did today or we have indeed for the previous 5 months of the season.
[cite]Posted By: WSS[/cite] Very few chances created (how many saves did their keeper make?), very little cutting edge and very little invention.
Probably true, WSS. But didn't you see more patience, more composure on the ball, more endeavour to keep possession and to pass it around and an almost total eschewal of the long, hopeful punt up-field?
Perhaps the end result in number of chances created and cutting edge in the final third was similar. But the approach work was very different. To my eyes, at least.
Possibly IA. Still think we are lacking something that we haven't had in a couple of years. I tried to watch the game today without the emotion of the manager and really struggled to see any massive differences.
I thought we played well in patches and thought we passed to the wings well at points. I think people would be surprised how many times we 'launched' it the Joe. He done well holding it up though and Wagstaff's 'new' position was undoubtedly helping.
All slowly slowly catchy monkey though so I'm expecting small steps rather than giant leaps.
Glad about the clean sheet and two goals, we need to fix our goal difference, this is what it could come down to in the end, the league is really tight, not much point difference between teams.
Good to see us being patient and not hoofing it long. That was the major difference to the years BC (Before Chris).
He has already made a difference and will continue to do so given time. The crowd will have to be patient too. We don;t have the players to destroy teams but if we do the basics right, keep the ball and pass and move we'll win more than we lose.
today was a prime example of us playing against what amounts to a pub side .... we didn't have to play well and yet came away with the 3 points , make no mistake plymouth are mid table dross,
midweek their wonder strikes flew in v mk dons today they flew into the stands behind the goals, woeful shooting from them
had small tears in my eyes with SCP return before and after the game
didn't think our support was as loud as i'd hoped but did hear "your support is farking shit" being sung to the 868 plymouth fans , yep we brought 567 to them ......
waggy's energy was brilliant and seips balls up for the 1st and indecision for the 2nd which eventually ecclestone slotted home via a deflection were the differences on the day
still quite a bit of work to be done but the piss poorness of the other teams will help us reach the play offs
as i now see it 5% chance of automatics 70% chance of the play offs and a 25% chance of another year of pony opposition coming to the valley
I agree that Scott Wagstaff had a good game and deserved the goal. He had great energy and did well playing up the middle. He did well when he moved to right wing as well and did some really good covering. Scott Wagstaff could have easily been the candidate to do the robbie elliot punch in the air at the end. Fair enough it was Chris Powell but if he plays like that again, he should be given the encouragement to do it.
I totally agree with all those who pointed out the patient passing play in the first 30 mins. I thought we resorted to hoofing it up in the last 15 mins or so of the first half. The players seemed to forget about the passing and the play deteriorated a bit. Rome wasn't built in a day. The passing play early in the half was good to watch and that's why the crowd stayed patient.
McCormack at right half solidified things as well. His best game in a Charlton shirt. Francis had a good game. Ayinsah was good as well. Great strike from Ecclestone.
Sure it wasn't perfect, the crossing was woeful, and more quality is needed, but it is definitely something to build on.
I want to see what funds (and ambition) the new owners have to got to support Chris Powell. With 3 to 4 quality additions , we will definitely compete for promotion.
Francis is still a woeful footballer. We still drop to deep we still make poor decisions in games that nearly or sometimes cost goals.
But it was different the players were different the movement off the ball was different, the togetherness was different, the willingness to get on the ball and pass it was different.
Plymouth played like we have been pumpin the ball up top aimlessly to s Target or hitting the channels with a ball over the top.
The fans were as patient as the players .
The mood was different.
Anyone who couldn't or can't see that has expectations that far outdo the reality of our situation
[cite]Posted By: uncle[/cite]Thought we done well in the first half kept the ball well without needlessly giving it away by lumping it up to a lone striker. Also thought in that first half that waggy was immense, he ran every inch of that pitch and never gave up on anything which is how he got his goal. Dailly looked good at the back after missing a couple of early headers, Semedo was strong in the middle too. Didn't think anyone had a bad game to be honest and the crowd although much smaller than i thought it would be were very good (especially upper north). Ecclestone done well in his first home game and looks like he might do some damage bags of pace (but i'd already said about that) and a good eye for goal. Could be a great little signing despite being a young loanee, some of them do work hard.
I pretty much agree with all of this. I never thought we were in danger of losing the game. Defensively we were solid. Semedo. Racon and Macca did well in midfield and Waggy was causing them problems for much of the game. Every player was up for it and nobody hid or played badly.
Was very pleased with Ecclestone, especially the goal. Even Reid looked as if he cared enough to try. My MOM - Waggy - he just gets better and better.
Loving Powells post match comments and desperate to see some pictures...
When the second goal when I there was a big scream from Melbourne!!
thought the crowd were patient, and that is the key that will get us better results at the Valley, Peter Reid brought it up in his post match interview that had it been with Phil the crowd would have been on the teams back after 20 mins...
Not blaming the new manager at all but it was another pretty average afternoon's entertainment (I'm sure we generally had better matches last season?). Almost totally devoid of goalmouth action which was down to the conservative nature of both line-ups as well as a lack of quality. However Ecclestone's goal was excellent and a good way to end the game. Anyway, a good start for the new manager and now it's all about putting a serious run together.
I for the first time in a long time walked away from the Valley having thoroughly enjoyed myself. Plymouth parked the team bus in front of goal in the first half but I thought our passing and movement was already the best I've seen from us this season. Where we let ourselves down was in delivery from wide positions, corners and free kick. Francis is just not good enough at taking free kicks and corners and I suspect that first thing Monday morning that's what he'll find himself doing.
The second half a much better game of football, Plymouth started to play and could have scored a couple of times. but this opened them up to the error that lead to our first goal. I loved Waggy's celebration, you can see how much he cares.
I liked the way we chased everything, we looked like we really wanted the ball. The second goal was just a joy to behold. I remember thinking, I really hope he just decides to take these two defenders on and have a crack... and he did!
Yes their is room for improvement but I would not let that get in the way of what was a terrific day in Charlton's history.

[quote][cite]Posted By: Kap10[/cite]Did anyone else notice that when waggy scored chrissy and damian told the whole outfield team to celebrate together[/quote]
[quote][cite]Posted By: nth london addick[/cite]we commented on it yesterday that the biggest plus for me was the genuine togeterness of the players and the bench[/quote]
now that sounds quality....and the reason Powelly was chosen...
there was a different feel in the place, you could sense it and i think that if any thing the patient way in which we approached the day was partially down to not wanting chris powells day to turn sour.
it was not a rocking valley it was not a full on attack attack attack but it was genniunely different.
i cant stick my finger on it it can be the CP affect but i think there was more than that, i think cp had the stature, the pressence the calmness annd considered approach that could mark him out to be a very intellectual and fantastic mgr
A more settled performance I thought, less of the Keystone cops stuff and more concentration on keeping possession. Moving Waggy forward showed to me that CP is quick to pick out players individual qualities and utilise them in a new way which for me was a very encouraging sign. Waggy's determination and energy created a goal out of nothing and I'm absolutely delighted for him. Eccles had a dream home start, skillful, tenacious and highly promising. McCormack has lifted his performances, looks motivated and happier with the new regime. I lost count of Dailly's headers, what a pro! Weaknesses obviously, nothing we didn't already know about but I did get some sense that the tide has turned which provided me with a very happy day at The Valley.

The owners needed it, the Manager needed it, the players needed it and we, the faithful needed it.
The smiling faces on the way out of The Valley said it all..time to examine & dissect the game later.
The best is yet to come.
