[cite]Posted By: nolly[/cite]so you think personally offending my family on here and getting cheekier by the minute im not going to personally pull you up? your mistaken
You slagged off the Royal Family, when did I mention your family?
I cannot get "cheekier" because you are a young lad and an old man like me cannot be "cheeky" to a lad like you.
[cite]Posted By: Chirpy Red[/cite]You had a nasty dig at our glorious Royal Family. It stunk of bitterness, hate and a general misinterpretation of Great Britain’s premier dynasty.
Where else could such malice arise from?
There you are, I've saved you a trip.
I didn't vote for them to be king.
This is outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society.

[cite]Posted By: Chirpy Red[/cite]But Len you probably DID vote for that, however indirectly. You're one of the few old enough on here to have voted in our last referendum.
We were already in at the time of the 1975 referendum and it wasn't a true IN or OUT but more a device for Harold Wilson to pull together dissenting factions of the Labour Party at the time. He wanted a YES vote as did Heath and the Tories hence the propaganda for a "YES" was overwhelming.

Does the same go for the EU BFR?
* Ducks*[/quote]
You need to remember that it was your lot who took us into the EU and your beloved milk snatcher who signed the Maastrict treaty taking us in even more deeply. In those days the right used to like the EU - they thought that British industry and commerce would benefit from having access to a larger and wider market, then they realised that socialist Europe was outcompeting Britain. Then the right got sniffy and demanded to take their ball home when Europeans unaccountably didn't want to buy badly built British Leyland tat.
But the EU is worth retaining for at least one reason - the rise in the blood pressure of those on the right is always amusing. Even more amusing is poibting out to the anti-EU brigade that they shouldn't really be driving their German built cars, or weating French suits, drinking Spanish wine, or using Italian kitchen appliances...

And always some humour in the truth.
Ultimately the royal family are a relic of an imperialist era, in a modern democracy constructed on meritocratic principles they no longer serve any purpose. Execept to get Tory boy types excited.

The "milk snatcher" signed the Single European Act in 1986 which effectively put the kybosh on our ability to control immigration - freedom of movement in the EU ( or EC as they called it then) and all that. Major was the one who signed Maastricht.
You suggest it is just the right that want out of the EU. Bob Crowe is just one Union Leader who is on record as saying the same and I don't think anybody would call him right wing!
The anti EU brigade, as you put it, are quite happy to trade with Europe. They just want control over their own country's destiny rather than have it determined by an unelected bureacracy in Brussels.
So cool to hate the Royal's eh? Not really, if it were not for the income generated from tourists outside Buckingham palace you would be all living in slums.
[cite]Posted By: Chirpy Red[/cite]I love the Royals and I think a quick look at the guest list for Friday shows why.
Invited - Margaret Thatcher, John Major.
Not invited -Tony Blair, Gordon Brown.
Don't you just love it?
surprised by that, you would have thought protocol would dictate all ex PMs got an invite
According to St James Palace protocol suggests that former PM's are only invited if they have been Knighted, or the equivalent for Mrs T obviously.
Can you imagine how excited Ms C Blair-Booth QC was when she heard of the wedding? I bet she spent a fortune on an outfit and has accosted her postie every morning for her expected invite! LOL!

& Jarman, please tell us why You're so angry ? This is Not a criticism or "digging you out", but noticed in the last few messages you posted that Benson is "hopeless", Solly is "pony" & Jenkinson 's a "pr*ck". Thats without you moaning about SLL, Powell and the above.
MoG.
[cite]Posted By: Friend Or Defoe[/cite]Jarman's right, the tourists looking through the rails of Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guards will get us out of the recession.
God knows I am no fan of Blair but I think that the article is bang-on, the Royal Family is supposed to be well above party politics and this decision will leave a very sour taste with many people.
The Royal Family is financed by tax-payers of all political stripes and to have two such powerful Labour figures so publicly embarrassed - including one who was PM for 10 years - is a very crass and potentially divisive move by the Royals on a day when they have public opinion solidly behind them for the first time in a long time.
Instinctively I should be a republican but in reality I am a reluctant Monarchist , but I have no interest in the Royal Wedding .
The reason for this is that it should mean our head of state is relatively apolitical in terms of party politics although I do accept BFR's arguments about an imperialist Bygone era .
In 1984 I remember Reagan opening the LA Olympics during his re election campaign against Walter Mondale it changed the way I saw the Monarchy.
Next year we will be hosting and it should be the Queen not Cameron , Johnson or Clegg who takes centrestage although they will all no doubt jocky for the best seat behind .
Had a nice Thai curry last night with someone who turned down his invite to the wedding. He is a Lord Leiutenant and just can be bothered with the hassle. I would have jumped at the chance myself, and the invitation list is impressive, families of fallen servicemen, charity workers, his sergeant, his boss where he lives and works in Anglesey, a real cross section, and no Blair! Great.
Regarding Blair and Brown, whatever you may think or read, this IS a private wedding. It is not a state occasion. Prince William is not the heir apparent. He is not the Prince of Wales.
In 81 when Charles married Lady Di it was a full on STATE occasion, that's why it was held at St Pauls, simply for the numbers involved. ALL former PM's were invited. MacMillian, Douglas-Home, Wilson, Heath and Callaghan.

[cite]Posted By: Cordoban Addick[/cite]If we got rid of the royals, wouldn't the palaces still be there for the tourists to visit?
And why would an end to the Monarchy be anti-British?
France, Italy and Germany have got tons of castles full of tourists paying for a look round AND they don't have to pay the blood-suckers to live in them.

Aren’t the vast majority of the world’s wealthiest economies republics ? I don’t see that there would be a massive economic problem were we to get rid of them. We probably should, but only after we get that extra days holiday next year.

etc......

What you wearing, I would hate to clash!
Even the dear old Daily Mail has questioned the wisdom of Buckingham Palace so publicly snubbing the country's last two Prime Ministers....
