  • 6 months ago he was on loan at eastbourne borough.

    good luck to him.

  • Certainly don't want him back on loan - if we ain't good enough for him as a registered player then he can sod off.

Can't see him getting a game in the Arsenal first team for a number of years.............he may well be back at Eastbourne Borough (on loan)

  • Thought he might have shafted us, but CP says he has acted exceptionally during the whole affair and ensured that we got a decent wedge of cash for him.  He spoke well of us in his parting words as well.

So thanks Carl, and good luck.

  • To be honest - Jenkinson is one for the future- not the present. I would rather loan him in a couple of years than next season.

With all due respect, I think this is cobblers. Of the myriad of players we played at full back at various times last season he looked the most accomplished at both right back and left back. I have no doubts that CP was intending to use him as first choice right back next season.

I doubt he'll get masses of first team action at Arsenal, but I wouldn;t be surprised to see him in a few Carling Cup games and see him do okay. He's definitely ready for first team action in League 1, regardless, and I'd gladly take him back on loan. I don't really see how his move is so different to Shelvey's and I can't imagine too many people would be too proud to have him back on loan.

  • I thought his parting words, if he wrote them were very endearing and he has handled himself at a young age very well and again its a positive credit to the CAFC academy. It also helps the marketability of other academy boys in the future and will attract other youngsters to bring the next players forward. Hopefully we can keep a few before having to sell on once we move back up the League

So you don't think he's reading a statement written by a press officer?
As far as a loan back, Won't happen. Why would he want to come back here and get booed? He's moved on, so should we. Christ, we're still running threads and constantly talking about Jonjo. Who cares what he's doing and if he's getting in the liverpool team or not? I have nothing against either of these lads but as they are no longer employed by the club, I'm simply not bothered about them anymore than i am any of their new team-mates.
  • Good luck to him. Easy to say that as he was not an important first team player. Arsenal see something in him, hope he breaks through.

  • Good luck to him, shame as thought he would be a key player for this year after his form when he came into the first team last season, still its a fair price so cant complain really, we're not in much of a position to turn down bids of that size for any player (although realise this wasn't technically a bid), that and I think solly can do a good job, him and waggy have potential to form a great partnership down the right.
  • who is arsenals backup if sagna gets injured?...eboue, who i dont think wenger will let near his back 4 ever again. cant think of anyone else off the top of my head. think he will get a game in the carling cup and possibly a few sub appearances. good luck to him
  • Good luck to him.

Clever media management or not all the right things have been said to allow him to return on loan and to promote the Academy to prospective kids\parents.

Shame we couldn't keep him longer but SLP suggest we have made a decent wedge (more than half our annual playing budget).
  • To be honest, I preferred Francis. Not saying Jenkinson wont be much better in time but I commented at the time when everybody was giving him high marks, that I couldn't see it. Mind you, I'm one of a small minority that can see something in Francis so what do I know.

    i was referring to francis?
  • ah fair enough
  • Agree- he played well that match, but was he that good? Also agree Francis could be a liabilty sometimes but I can see that he could be an effective championship player with some perseverance and faith.
  • think we should remember that Jenks played out of position in practically every game he played and did it well. I'd hate to think what Francis would be like at left-back, although with two left feet ......

Francis was the player Eddie Youds picked out when asked by Charlton Live which young players he thought were promising.

He did say he's possibly playing within himself, suggesting he does need to improve.

I do know what you mean, if Francis sorted out his decision making he'd look a much better player.
  • Obviously the devil will be in the detail of how much of the fee will be up front etc, but it's not as big a loss as someone like Shelvey as far as I can see.

A right back isn't going to win you promotion, whereas a creative midfielder or another forward just might have a bigger impact - so if any of the fee goes on strengthening those areas, then so much the better.

Good luck to him, and hope he gets some sort of a chance there.

  • Francis' problem is he is too casual. He often looks a bit flat footed and a bit slow to react/tries to take more time than he going to have. I know what people are saying, he has lot of the raw materials to be a decent player and when he looks sharpe and focussed he is okay but he's prone to switching off and I'm not sure he'll ever stop doing that. I certainly don't think he's well suited to playing a passing side, as CP seems to want us to be, he seemd to have one pass in his armoury which was an aimless punt down the line. Shame the rest of his game doesn't quite match up to his crossing which could be excellent.
  • I must admit to being totally bemused by the whole Jenkinson transfer.

The couple of times I have seen him play he has never looked much more than a reasonably competent defender, certainly nothing outstanding.

Still, if Arsenal want to pay big money for him then its a bonus from our POV, he was not really an integral part of our team anyway.

I wish him luck, its a great opportunity for him and one that he could not really turn down as it may never get offered to him again.

I read Steve Morison's comments about moving from Millwall to play in the Premier League with Norwich and his words were bang on the money, he basically said that a lower league player might only get one chance to play in the Premier League and that he owed it to himself to take the oppprtunity.

  • 2 million pounds for a player that only played for charlton 8 times good business.

How was that player charlton had center back i think he was and joined Manchester United?

Sean mcginty, was 15 when he signed for man utd, not sure if a fee was announced but i think it was approaching 1mil including add ons for compensation, which isnt bad considering he played for our reserves for one full season.  He did stand head and shoulders above the rest, more so than jenkinson when he was mcgintys age.  Hes just signed professional terms with man utd on a 2 year deal as of 2010 and played in the fa youth cup final win, also captained his country and will be in the u19 euro tournament in July, as republic of ireland qualified (England didnt).
  • I've tried, very hard actually, to not say this: Some of our fans on here are complete wankers when it comes to football. There, I've said it. Feel alot better for it.

most people are complete wankers when it comes to football. A lot of people fail to see that this isn't a game of football manager and that the human side of football is a big part of the game. Jenkinson gets to play with the best players in the world, train with the best coaches and at the club he's supported since he was a boy. And we've got around (reportedly) £2 million for him, which is a hell of a lot of money for a league one club and covers almost half of our losses for this coming season. Win, win situation!

    Well done Carl!
  • Training with the Arsenal crowd can only benefit him.

He will be loaned back to CAFC at some stage this season and will play first team

  • I'd love to know how much up front we get of the unreachable 2m
Anything over 300k is a touch I'd say cos it is pure potential they're buying and to me there's a little there but nothing major
Charlton clearly didn't rate him too highly at the beginning of last season cos he was only considered worth a year contract
So any sort of dough is a result imo
  • Personally I was impressed by Jenkinson, he played well at left back, also to consider he will be a natural right back. He carries the ball well and was aware of what was around him when he was running with the ball.  Reminded me off a young Billy Bonds in that way and similar in height.
  • Charlton clearly didn't rate him too highly at the beginning of last season cos he was only considered worth a year contract
maybe he was only prepared to sign for a year

And Parky had such a good eye for a player apparently....

See thats where your different to me and probably quite a lot of other Charlton fans tango. We have always been a club that are proud of the players we both produce and nurture. I always look out for how Jonjo is getting on (very well), I always smile when I see Benty has knocked in yet another goal in an average side. I am also desperately pleased to see Parker getting in the England side (finally).

My point is, we shouldnt hold a grudge against these young players. Anybody in the same position would do exactly the same thing. I would be more than happy to have Carl back at the club, like Exiled_Addick has already mentioned, he looked our most accomplished full-back in both positions last season! Do people not realise that when we get these moves it raises the profile once again of our club and its ability to produce good quality young players!?Our fans always have to moan!

We kept 5 u18s on, doubt the club wanted to risk anything longer than a year.

He finished the season on loan with Welling, I'm sure he wouldn't have told the club he would only sign for a year

He does, but when you need to make something like 10 signings, can only offer average League 1 wages with a little to spend on fees it's no surprise when you mainly bring in average League 1 players.
