  • I accept he had his hands tied and given that the jury has to remain out at best but to say he has a good eye for a  player seems a bit odd. Not exactly been a stampede for his services. Did well at Colchester, ballsed it up at Hull, relegated with us and failed to get us back up and has left us with the worst squad we've ever had (limited budget accepted). As i say, jury out at best. - sits back and waits for all the 'not another parky debate' merchants to pipe up.

See the comment mid way about Jenkinson wanting us to get a fee and not relying on compensation rights. Can't seem to be able to highlight it.

Arsenal have announced the signing of 19-year-old Finland
Under-21 defender Carl Jenkinson from Charlton.

The 6ft 1in right-footer, who also qualifies to play for England, made his
debut for the Addicks in December 2010 and featured eight times last season.

He was predominantly deployed at full-back but can also play at centre-back.

"I hope supporters will understand why I can't turn down such an opportunity,
but Charlton will always have a place in my heart," said Jenkinson.

"I will always be in Charlton's debt for the training they have given me
    since a young age.

"I'm grateful to the club's academy and all the coaching staff, so I'm
delighted the two clubs have come to an agreement."

Jenkinson, whose transfer fee has not been disclosed by either club, is the
Gunners' first summer acquisition following their sixth successive season
    without a trophy.

He was born in England to a Finnish mother and has already represented both
countries at youth level, captaining Finland Under-19 side earlier this
    year.

    Charlton boss Chris Powell

Charlton chief executive Stephen Kavanagh stated: "This is a great move for
Carl, and it's difficult to stand in the way of a player when a club the size of
Arsenal expresses interest, particularly if, like Carl, you come from an
    Arsenal-supporting family.

"The last few weeks of the season were difficult as the deal was finalised
but could not be signed until the Premier League transfer window opened.

"But Carl's attitude throughout has been exemplary, and he made clear from
the start that he wanted the club that produced and nurtured him to benefit from
the deal in the right way and not by having to rely on compensation rights.

"I would like to thank Carl, his father and Arsenal for their professional
    manner in dealing with matters."

Jenkinson, a boyhood Arsenal fan, also attracted praise from Addicks boss
Chris Powell for the way in which he had conducted himself and for his potential
    on the pitch.

"I want to put on record how much I admire Carl as a player and, more
importantly, as a young man," said Powell.

"I wish him well on behalf of all the staff and players because it's a dream
    move for him.

"If he grows into the right-back we all feel he could be, we could be talking
about a player playing at the highest level for a long time

  • It's enlightening that Arsenal supposedly have the pick of youngsters from all over europe and africa yet still have to plunder players from smaller clubs at rock bottom fees. Jones is going for a reported £10 to 15 million, the slightly older Henderson for up to £20 million. I know Jenkinson was out of contract but it is a disgrace that he is allowed to go for as little as a million(ish). The rules on kidnapping need revisiting.
  • can peeps stop saying thanks for the memories FFS he played less than 15 games lol.

    good luck to him

But Jones, despite being the same age, has already played in the Premier League and for England U21s.  He was also on a five year contract.  Henderson has a full cap for England.

Considering he was out on loan at Eastbourne only a few months ago £2m seems a very good price right now.  In a few years time it might seem a steal or total waste of cash but right now it ain't bad for a decent league 1 player IMHO.

I think supporters can understand why Jenkinson couldn't turn down the opportunity - but are not so undersatnding as to why he didn't do what Shelvey did and sign a new contract which would have rewarded Charlton a bit more. You could see he had a lot of potential but I think people were a bit over generous about his performances last term. I certainly don't really care if he doesn't come back on loan this season although next season might be nice.
  • Despite his comments if he ever plays against us the dullards in the North Upper will still boo him.

How would that work though? If he signs a new deal the chance would have gone. He couldn't sign a new deal knowing Arsenal were after him and a month later signed for Arsenal.
  • Have no idea how you can compare Jones and Henderson to Jenkinson, exactly what I said yesterday, CJ has turned into another stick with which to beat Wenger. No feelings for Wenger but bit unfair on the bloke who is living his "dream".
  • So arsenal only wanted him as he was out of contract & they knew that they would only have to pay a compensation fee and not a transfer fee.

They obviously wanted him that much then !

A year ago he was only offered a one year contract only and signed it. Now apparently he's being disloyal because he wouldn't sign a longer contract when the club wanted him to?! The mistake if it was that was purely down to us not to sign him to a longer contract.

I think 100% of us would have done what Jenkinson did - more money, better football, playing and tarining with better players, first class coaches and if he doesn't make it then he's financially assured for some time to come.

I'm not sure that the comparison with Jonjo is really appropriate - he was destined for bigger and better things and when he signed a new contract he did so without a counter-offer on the table from another club. That's not really the case here - offers from teams like Arsenal don't arrive that frequently. Arsenal won't be giving him much if any first team action, they want to train him up the Arsenal way before giving him his chance.

    Completely agree BFR.

Well they obviously rate him, but he's a cheap gamble for Arsenal. Had he signed a new contract with us and we then asked for £5m I doubt they'd have paid it.
  • Did we win a single game that he played in?.

If its 2m then we have done amazingly well.

Thought he looked ok. Nothing particularly special and am quite frankly amazed that Arsenal have taken him.

  • Lots seem to rate him, he didn't over impress me but you could see that he could be decent in the future. Not sure he showed he can be an Arsenal player but time will tell. More to do with age/experience than ability but I preferred Solley and Francis over him and we are not exactly desperate in this position IMO. Hope next season is one where we give Francis a break and support him to be the player I think he can be.

  • 18 years old, playing out of position and still held his own. He is going to be a very good player. I think it was a good piece of business for both parties but its ashame we didnt get at least one season out of him (like we did with Shelvey) especially considering as we developed him as a player since the ago of 9. I suppose it goes with being a league one club, not being able to keep hold of any decent youth players. I hope Solly is our first choice right back. If Francis plays then you can only play him right wing for me as he seems to get to the byline well but imo cant defend.

  • It's a good deal for us.  Even better if he comes back on loan (not sure whether this will happen, though).

Good post, cafc_se7 btw - I feel the same way.  I smile when Benty scores or Jonjo plays for Liverpool and am proud of our role as a club in producing quality players like them.  Long may it continue.

  • £2.8m for Millwall's best player for years, £2m for a Charlton youth team player.
    Think we did quite well....

think about it Parky is now joint assistant manager and head scout at arsenal... Wonder who pointed him out to Wenger?

Did he actually get that gig or was it just paper talk?
  • No he didn't. He's just head scout.

  • Did we win a single game that he played in?.

Good question Clem. The answer (as I'm sure you know) is no:
    Hartlepool (away) - sub - Lost 1-2
    Exeter (home) - Lost 1-3
Notts County (away) - Lost 0-1
    Carlisle (home) - Lost 1-3
    Tranmere (home) - Drew 1-1
MK Dons (away) - Lost 0-2
    Brentford (home) - subbed - Lost 0-1
    Dagenham (away) - Lost 1-2

So played 8, Lost 7, Drew 1.  His first appearance co-incided with Powell's first defeat.  Immediately after he stopped playing results picked up (a little) with two draws and a win out of four.  Of course football's a team game so we can't lay all those defeats at his door, nevertheless it doesn't look impressive does it.   £2m?  Thank you very much!

  • i didnt think he was anyting special at al, and every gooner that has asked i have tod the same, top of league 1 to low champ at best currently, with potential to improve maybe

top 4 prem not on your nelly and wont be for absolute ages with a lot of luck and misfortune

very very strange signing for wenger

So he was our Jonah & we've thrown him overboard.

    Promotion here we come  :-)

  • Wenger tends to have more winners than losers in his transfer dealings.

    @alangee

I don't think that can be said of his recent defensive purchases
  • Wenger tends to have more winners than losers in his transfer dealings.
Not anymore I don't think, with the exception of Thomas Vermaelen (though he has struggled with injury and was probably overpriced to start with) and Samir Nasri (who looks set to bunk off on a free after Arsenal spent £16M on him), Wenger has not made a decent signing since about 2006 and coincidentally they have won nothing in the meantime. Signing two players that are top 4 first team standard and better than what they have in five years shows you that Wenger has lost the plot.
  • I accept he had his hands tied and given that the jury has to remain out at best but to say he has a good eye for a  player seems a bit odd. Not exactly been a stampede for his services. so why did it take him so long to get in the first team at Charlton? the whole ground could tell you he's a good player but parky signed a bunch of duds before giving him a go
  • Parky didn't even give him a go.  Perhaps he sensed that they'd both end up at Arsenal and wanted to save him for them ;-)
  • When Parky was sacked, those duds were firmly in the play off places and were in the 4th round of the FA cup. They had also recently defeated the eventual play off winners convincingly away and earned Parky manager of the month a month or so earlier. The fact is that the team were struggling when Jenkinson came in and whilst he didn't tear up any trees  he looked like one for the future and fans over egged the praise for him a bit when there wasn't much praise that could be passed to others. Personally, I don't think he brought anything to us - his best game was Brentford away in the JPT and he was ok nothing more in the others albeit playing out of position for a good number of them.

I'm not trying to undermine his role because he has left us -  my player marks at the time support my comments. I have no problems at all with Francis being our starter right back next season - my only hope is that some of the morons who have decided to blame him for all that went wrong - in the opposite way they over praised Jenkinson - lay off him and give him a chance. I see bags of potential in Francis and indeed Solley so losing Jenkinson and getting some useful dough is far from a disaster.

Parky did. I remember him playing Brentford A in November at the very least.
