Worst and Best Moment in Charlton's history

edited June 2011 in General Charlton
Looking back at Charlton's history what would you say Charlton's best and worst moment in history?

Best
Obviously
returning back to the Valley was great but the key point of that
success was we were the first ever club to get involved with politics
and form the Valley Party. That was the key point of that return and it
still amazes me in 10 years time after that we were a fully established
premiership side and I was certainly spoilt with Charlton when I started to go and see them 1994/95 season until we were
in decline the past few years.

Worst

Got to be when we were
very close to liquidation in the 80's. Why on earth was Mark Huyler
spending more than what we had when we bought Simonson. I was not around
to witness that but was any of you worried where the money was coming
from at that time? Also when I was watching the Centenary DVD everyone
was saying "If we bought defenders we would of been a success" not one
single manager had that logic <img class=" title="Laughing" />

being young, i only remember from around 2000 onwards, so the best moment was the 03/04 season as a whole. best Charlton team by a mile.

worst has to be the bailey penalty. i know relegation from both prem and champ were bad, but they was written on the wall from march onwards and bailey's penalty. well that's just horrible.

i may have missed some out but off the head that's the worst feeling i've had at a football match.

That season was a let down in the end, if Parker had stayed I reckon we would of been top 6.

Casting my mind back, I don't think I was that worried - although I was pretty young. We had tried to get Keegan before Simonsen and the impression at the time was that Hulyer had some dosh. Yes it was extremely worrying when it looked like that was that as far as Charlton was concerned -it wasn't a possibility it was a likliehood.

Then of course there was the famous handing out of leaflets at a home win against Palace that we would be leaving the Valley for Sellout. That wasn't good. Looking back, I wish I'd have kept that bit of paper as a bit of history, though I threw it away in disgust. The last game at the Valley was a very bad moment - we won 2-0 but who cared.

Mind you those worst moments were positive developments for the club in a perverse sort of way. The ground was not developed- crowds were low, something happened and the fans stood up to the plate. It showed that us Charlton fans are special and I wish just a bit of that spirit would return to help the club out of its current demise. But maybe things need to be worse than they are now to galvanise people into action. But there were glimpses- the Exeter game last season- it fell flat result wise but fans including myself made a real effort and it was so nice to see the Valley nearly full. Would love to see a couple of repeat initiatives like that this season but with better result outcomes this time.

With hindsight, appointing pardew under the terms that he was employed, basically do what you like and if you screw up you get £1m

    during my lifetime

    best

winning the play-off final against leeds in '87. i honestly think there would be no cafc if we'd gone down that year.

the momentum that gathered from campaign to get us back to the valley.

    worst

the period of financial uncertainty resulting in us leaving the valley.

    allowing smileys on charlton life.

For me the worst is losing The Valley, and the best is Returning to The Valley. The Playoff win was great, and I am sure winning the FA Cup was amazing too, but neither compare to being homeless and having to battle on.

Imagine if you were made homeless and had to try and carry on working whilst living in somebody else's house, and they aren't your best friend or a relative, oh no, it's your old enemy, and he's charging you ridiculous prices, and won't let you use the front room or the kitchen whilst you stay there!

Then you move out and go to live with another person, and this time though you went to the same school together you weren't very friendly towards eachother, and you learn he has a history of crimes against his name. Not to mention the fact that he lives on the wrong side of town from all your friends and family. His house may be bigger than the other guys, but he's more intimidating.

Then imagine the joy you would get from struggling through all of this, from rock bottom and worse, to pull yourself together, get back your house and push on in life, back from the brink. In fact, you become so successful afterwards that you renovate your house to surpass the levels of the places you stayed in, and you achieved new heights in your career because of it.

Just getting a promotion at work, or a small bonus, doesn't really compare to this IMO

Breaking away from the obvious, a great moment for me was beating palace in their backyard the year we got relegated into the championship. Sun was out, great atmosphere, good performance even better result, and Danny Mills celebrating like a CAFC fan at the end. Loved it.

Moving to Selhurst then losing 3-0 to Millwall there was a particular low point

Going back to the Valley, winning play off final and winning Championship the high points. Starting to get rid of most of our current squad is another.

That's really weird, because exactly what you described did happen to me.

Anyway, for me nothing will beat 1998 just for the sheer emotional exhaustion I felt at the end and the way it still makes me feel thirteen years on.

My low is probably the home play off semi final against Palace (96?). Watching a 2-1 defeat with a shocking hangover.

    Avoiding the obvious:

    Best.

As an 8 year old the roar of the train going through the tunnel between Blackheath & Charlton.

As a young lad, the complete stranger who kindly paid for me to get in when I walked all the way to one home match but forgot to take any money.

    The banter with fellow supporters.

Schmeichel's sending off, the halftime singsong and Carl Leaburns' goal at Old Trafford in the FA Cup QUARTER final.

Dressing my poor 11 year old daughter up for the Play-Off final because I was too old to look like that myself.

    Worst

Not knowing whether Kim Grant's intended chip over Schmeichel was goalbound....Imagine if we had taken the lead......

Getting no praise from the press when we drew 1-1 at QPR in the League Cup, it was all about Stan Bowles.

On the playing side, worst: being pipped by Blackburn to promotion in  '58 thus missing out on an instant return to Div 1 and leading to 13 years of Div 2 and then Div. 3.

Best: winning the F.A Cup. I was only one when it happened but my dad spoke about it so often I felt that I had actually been there. Couldn't wait to see this fantastic team.

Off the field: the usual. The lack of investment in team and ground, the High Court and all that follower. Now the recent relegations and missing out on the play-off last year leading to further financial problems. Ho hum, the lot of being an Addick!

Best moments off the top of my head - Di Canio chipping Lehman (?) Di Canio making a mockery of the multi million £ Chelsea defence on Boxing Day. (Pretty much the whole Di Canio season - cos it was the biggest surprise. My first feelings when I saw we'd signed him were 'desperate', 'has been', 'trouble maker' etc. Yet he had a magic about him and actually turned out to be a model professional - love that bloke so much). Also Euell smashing home the 3rd in that great win against Blackburn. Jensen's winner against Blackburn the following season - never screamed so much in my life). Jensen's beauty against United at home, El Kakouri's rocket against Arsenal (love that bloke too).

Worst - scoring the equaliser away against Everton only for them to go up the other end and score that stupidly overrated goal to win 2-1. That away Aston Villa game in the season we lost Parker. One of the stupidest results and all thanks to that clown Clattenburg. Had 2 or 3 goals disallowed - one where 2 Villa defenders bumped into each other and numerous penalty appeals turned down. People always say we would have got into Europe if Scott Cunt Parker hadn't left then others say 'u can't say that' but come on. Yes play would have been totally different, yes he may have got injured/had his head messed up etc but get the fuck out of here. We were about 3 points off Europe so take your pick - Parker staying for one more game and turning a win into a loss, Villa game being a win, no question, we would have qualified for Europe and usually in football I take things on the chin or accept when we're shit but that simply wasn't fair, that's where it all started to go wrong and that's why I hate Parker so much and will never forgive him.

One of the worst moments was also Curbs leavi

Best feeling watching the comeback and winning 3-4 !! Old School proper Charlton ! Didn't even mind some stranger Charlton fan giving my missus a kiss when the 4th went in !!

Best - Obviously the ones everybody has picked ie Play-off games. Going back to the Valley etc

Sitting in the back of a Police van rushing to Newcastle station to catch a train home after beating them in the game when we only had about 20 supporters at the match.

Moving down the Arthur Wait stand to watch us take the pens against Sunderland in the cup.

    Going up at Blackburn.

    Worst -

My first Charlton game - Losing to Blackburn in the Full Members Cup at Wembly.

Losing to Utd at Old Trafford when things were looking so good at half time.

Drawing at Bristol City in the cup and then having to hide from all the bricks as we walked out at full time.
