    Saw Stop Shouting on Friday and he was walking like he had just spent 12 months stranded on a desert island with the Harlem Globetrotters !

  • As usual there's some good advice and some not so good advice and "facts" on here. Adam's mate on page one has it spot on. Most runners have been doing it for a bit. The ones that don't keep it up are those that start like a train, do way too much for their ability/current fitness levels and end up injured or losing the motivation to keep going. You are in now hurry to end uo with an injury so make sure you build up slowly, even if you feel great and seem to be making fast progress after a week or two. DO a run/walk strategy for a little bit.

    Average runner burns off around 1000/hr, cyclists around 700/hr - you do the "math" as to which is likely to lead to the fastest weight loss!

    Plenty of studies have also found that far from increasing joint and back problems, regular running (in proper, correctly fitting, trainers for your style of running) can in fact stave these off and help against the onset off arthritis. Just don't do too much too soon!

    Got more than few miles on my clock and no doubt that running's helping me stay in my adonis like condition...

  • Oh yeah, I completely agree with Bermuda's point about calling it 'jogging' and can I add 'fun runner' to this list of insulting remarks, every year at the London Marathon they describe 4 hour runners as this. WTF it's bloody hard to break 4 hours for 26.2 miles not 'fun'!

  • So sitting quietly for 4 hours burns 487 calories... who knew?  i must try tht more often!
  • get an exercise bike, don't even have to leave the house and there's a beer only metres away when you're done  :P
  • If you haven't done much running before I would recommend doing intervals of fast walking and very light jogging. Unfortunately fat is quite difficult to get rid of, you need to be doing periods of sustained exercise at a level where you are raising your heart rate and getting a bit out of breath. 

    To start off with do 3mins of walking with 1 minute of light jogging then switch back to the walking again. Do this five times and if it feels too easy reduce the walking time and increase the jogging (2 mins walking and 2 mins jogging for example). Gradually increase the number of times you repeat the intervals so building up to about 8 or 10 repetitions and if you feel comfortable, start to reduce the walking and increase the running. 

    It's important to feel your way into running, start off slowly and build it up to a comfortable level. Your heat and lungs will get stronger before your legs will so i'ts quite easy to get carried away even as a beginner.

    Get some decent tunes on your mp3 player, hit the park and stick with it. Happy running.

  • Inspired by this thread I decided to walk to The Valley today to pick up the new away shirt for my son. Apparently it's just over 5 miles according to our resident Seb Coe (Stop Shouting) so that's not a bad start.

    Got the train back though.

    I loathe running,used to be the best runner at school but there is never been joy in it even when winning,also I look demented when I run and alarm people when I go past. Senpai what martial arts do you do , I train with a dan three wing chun dude who teaches me a bit and I teach him a bit of boxing,you ever feel like popping down let us no,he has a new dojo in sidcup I'm thinking of starting there as two old to box or really spar proper with other boxers

  • Just got into it myself started running with a mate but he went away so I'm down the gym now doing 4km and trying to get my time down on it. First few times found really difficult but done it tonight and time is getting better

    Nolly, how could you? Wing chun practioners do not strut their stuff in dojos. Dojo is a Japanese word, where karate is practised and taught, Wing Chun is a southern Chinese martial art.

    Not me although i have been to the dojo to have my groin looked at! I'm sure i'd find martial arts a doddle mind you. Actually, just purchased £400 of ride to work vouchers today. Going to ride to work a couple of days a week - about a 30 mile return journey. Packed up 11 a side football about 18 months ago after breaking my ankle and have put on about 2 stone. The ankle can only take a bit of 5 a side once a week now so having to find other ways to lose weight and there's no way i'm giving up the food and booze.

    I'm pulling your leg a tad of course, Wing Chun is quite interesting as a martial art, it was originally designed by a buddhist nun in China for women, but is very adaptable and a good basic martial art whatever branch you specialise in. If you see at your local DVD store I recommend the "The Ip Man" a biopic based loosely on the life of Yip Kai-Man, a legendary Wing Chun and Kung Fu expert who taught Bruce Lee amongst others.

    I train in freestyle karate at a club in Whitstable. I've only been doing it for 4 and a half years. I've got my first dan in September. Very excited but nervous. I'm training like mad for it. About 5 days a week. The grading lasts for 6 to 8 hours for each day over a weekend which is why I do a lot of running to keep my stamina up. The karate style although more modern is mainly based on Wado Ryu. Although it's free style we have to do a lot of katas for each grading but the club is mainly geared to points and for those wanting a bit more, full contact.
