The Specials

edited October 2011 in Not Sports Related
I'm going to see The Specials on Tuesday night in Brighton. Saw them twice during their 30th anniversary tour in 09 (Brixton & Brighton) and couldn't get enough of them. Missed them first time around as I didn't start getting into the whole 2 Tone scene until it was just finishing and they split.

Just wondered if anyone else here has seen them or is planning to?

  • Yeah I'm going Tuesday myself. Can't wait.
  • I saw Neville Staples at People's Day. Excellent stuff!
  • going to see them at ali pally
  • with terry hall or without?
  • Full original line up, minus Jerry Dammers on keyboard who didn't want to be part of it. Sad really as it was really his band and he wrote most of their songs. However, a replacement keyboard player for a live show isn't the end of the world and didn't take anthing away from their performances last time.
  • Was hoping they'd play at Brixton academy again this time around as that is my favourite venue for gigs, but alas not. Didn't enjoy Brighton half as much as it's a shitty modern conference centre that creates little atmosphere and has poor acoustics, but hey ho!
  • was to young (much to young infact..) to be part of that scene music wise, was only when i got a job up town and i was working with a guy who played the trumpet in bad manners in there hey day that i got really into it he was a top bloke loads of stories and gave me loads of records, love ska and 2 tone now.
  • I went to their last gig, it was deserted, in fact it was like a ghost town in there.
  • Going next Thursday to Bournemouth gig

  • I asked this yesterday but no one knew the answer. In the video and TOTP performance of The Funboy Three doing Our Lips Are Sealed, does anyone know who the female band are? The drummer does backing vocals too. Were they the Bodysnatchers?
  • banarama chirp?
  • Definately bananarama. That was their big break.
  • Terry Hall is a fuuny guy with a dry wit. Just spoils it when he starts banging on about Man Utd.

Met him about 10 yrs ago, got a really cool picture somewhere if it wasn't tossed out with all the rest of my bits by my lovely ex-wife.

Got to know their drummer John back in the early 80's.......he was a great fella.

At the time he was good friends with the now sadly departed Kirsty McCol........yet another lovely person.

No it wasn't Banarama. Well some of them maybe but there was a drummer and a cello player and a couple of guitarists. As far as I know noe of Banarama could play truant let alone a musical instrument.

I saw Banarama "live", they mimed, supporting The Jam in 1981.

"UK fashion magazine The Face featured an article on Bananarama after their first single and it caught the attention of ex-Specials member Terry Hall, who invited them to collaborate with his new vocal group Fun Boy Three on the track "T'ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)". In 1982, the song hit the Top 5 in the UK and gave Bananarama their first significant mainstream success. Fun Boy Three then guest starred on Bananarama's song, "Really Saying Something," later that year."
Our Lips Are Sealed was 1983.
  • You're right Chirpy. Just seen this and it's def not banana's. Think it's the Go-Go's but not 100%.

  • No it's not the Go Go's. That was Belinda Carlisle's group. Jane Wiedlin from the Go' go's co-wrote the song with Terry Hall. The Go Go's did a version of the song in 1981.

The Go-Gos - this is the same band that Belinda Carlisle fronted. Jane Wiedlin co-wrote the song with Terry Hall  and released it in the US before  Funboy Three covered it/released it in the UK.

It's not the Go Go's! It looks nothing like the Go Go's. They are two completely different groups. The drummer with FB3 is not the Go Go's drummer Gina Schock.  After some extensive research I can reveal that she is June Miles-Kingston.She later played with the Communards. I've posted a photo below.

    From good old Wicki:

"...June Miles-Kingston went on to play drums with Everything but the Girl, the [[Fun Boy Three]her backing vocals being evident in Our Lips Are Sealed] and The Communards.[2] She also released a song with Jimmy Somerville entitled "Comment te dire adieu?", which reached number 14 in the UK Singles chart In 1986 she contributed backing vocals to several tracks on the Big Country album The Seer."
