Is Bradley Wright-Phillips better than Shaun?

  • He's not better Shaun, porn or PM Dawn, but he is ticking over very nicely thank you very much.
  • He said in a recent programme that Shaun hasn't heard the better than Shaun chant and he needs to get him along to the Valley, he thinks he would laugh, they seem to get on real well.

BWP is happy at the Valley. but a big fee and big wages at 26 could tempt even the most loyal of players

  • This thread is absolutely ridiculous. Yes BWP is having a superb season and I love him to bits at the moment but to start seriously questioning whether he is better than an established premier league player and England International just because he's scoring goals in this terrible, terrible division is crazy. He's 26 and he's playing in league one. There's a reason for that. I certainly think he will be good enough for the championship but you cannot realistically claim that he is better than shaun until he has had at least one successful season in the premier league!

If he really was a better footballer he would be playing in the Prem so it is a silly question. However he plays for us I join in the song happily, although knowing it is a bit tongue in cheek.

I wonder if there is any banter about it in the Wright Phillips household!

So sorry for the silly question.

Just a bit of fun related to the song.....

If it's alright with you - I 'd rather continue with the song than wait a couple of seasons for him to be in teh premiership (with us of course). Interesting sub question - seeing as he is that precious commodity - a goal scorer - would anybody swap him with Shaun? I don't think I would, irrespective of who is best!

Careful now, you may fall foul of the, 'ridiculous thread' police!

HE'S TALLER THAN SHAUN HE'S TALLER THAN SHAUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN, BRADLEY WRIGHT PHILLIPS IS TALLER THAN SHAUN.  END OF FACT
He's taller than you too, Steve. So's everyone.

    ;o)
  • Dont know why people think just being in the premiership makes the players a world apart from championship/top l1 players.

Derry, O'Hara and co must have been better than Parker for the few weeks he was a championship player, going by some peoples logic.

Being established is a shite way to rate a players ability.

He is more technical than SWP and has must more to his game. He might be playing against shite defence, but is always looks  like he is breezing it. His football is very instinctive.
Just because he is not in the prem now means nothing, he could well be in the prem in the next few years.

As far as form goes, hes doing very well at the moment, but he will continue to do okay/good throughout the season. That is part of having a good team behind you. Team game and all that...

    Strange topic.

It's clearly a strange comparison, simply because they play completely different positions......... like saying is Kermit better than Green?

  • I think some elements of playing in the Championship and League one make it harder. refs for instance- they allow defenders to be more physical generally that can be an issue for a striker. Of course many of the defenders are slow and lose their markers more often which works the other way.

We could start a thread on that once the song starts ringing around the ground!

    Well said :-)

  • Don't think they're comparable really, completely different positions/playing styles. Would be unfair to judge one against the other due to that. Though if you took average skill in all areas (like how they grade people on FIFA) then i think we all know that Shaun would be rated high.

What a load of tosh. What happened to Parker when his team dropped out of the Prem? A Prem team came and bought him. Because he is Prem quality. The Prem managers have had a good long time to take a look at BWP but I don't see them battering down Slaters door to put an offer in for him.

He's a fantastic player at this level and I suspect he can do the job at the Champ level too but if he was Prem quality he wouldn't be languishing in the third division.
  • Agreed Rizzo, that is ridiculous MattD! Do you seriously not know why people think being in the premiership makes players a world apart from championship and more particularly league one players?

And how on earth is being established a sh*te way to rate a players ability?! what else do you want to base their ability on, their ratings on Championship Manager?! Apologies if this sounds rude, but you sound like a complete imbecile.
  • Of course, BWP wouldn't "be languishing in the third division" if he'd passed his medical at Reading last January.

He'd be languishing in the Championship - or perhaps his goals would be firing Reading into the promotion race?

    *

With hindsight, not signing BWP may have cost Reading a lot more than not risking the alleged £300,000 of his transfer.
  • of course he is otherwise what would be the point singing the song

    all together now

    hes better than shaun

    hes better than shauuuuuuuuuuun

bradley wright phillips is better than you

  • Yes and he has played every game bar one this season - but failing that medical has done us a big favour.
  • Last season with BWP having scored 13 goals in 16 games for Plymouth in the Third Division, Reading had intended to pay £300,000 for BWP.

When that transfer broke down and with the end of the transfer window approaching, poverty stricken Plymouth panicked and desperate for any money, let BWP go for around £125,000.

Added to his goals last season, BWP has of course so far co-incidentally scored 13 goals in 16 games this season for Charlton.

  • Currently less than £5k a goal then!

Wonder how much Torrres has cost Chelski on that basis?
  • Totally different styles of play. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Bradley is a goal hanger who is getting better and better as a poacher and Shaun is a hard working winger who is at last able to make a decent cross and final pass. All they have in common is their surname

Well its not all they have in common, is it?
They both appear in a song sung at Charlton, and have been mentioned in a light-hearted thread on at least two discussion boards.
  • Quite simply, if BWP was better than SWP he wouldn't be here. He'd be in the Premiership. Frankly, I'd be over the moon to have either of them in the team as they are both quality players but Bradley is not better than Shaun.

If being in the premiership is a sign of quality, following that logic Stuart Taylor must be one of the best English goalkeepers of recent times, because hes been in the premiership for over ten years now.

and of course they have the same mother ..  Is there anything else they have in common that I have neglected to mention ?
  • Probably, and I'm glad you edited your post.
But I think its pretty obvious to everyone that they are different types of player.

Yes, even to me you old charmer, you.
  • errrr........ not quite so much of the 'old' if you please  .. I am still ageing nicely(ish)

They dont make championship manager anymore.
But performances and stats would be a good way to rate a player, clearly breezing it at this level, then looking at Norwich last year, Southampton this year, the championship/l1 divide isnt that big, I reckon BWP could cope with it.

    Prems glammed up

the parker thing, ye they did buy him, they didnt have to though. Nolan was good last year, now he is in the championship, still prem capable.
As for bids, Parker had just been relegated whereas we are not in a position where we need to sell. No1 will make a massive offer for BWP that we cant refuse
