PS3 or Xbox 360?

edited November 2011 in Not Sports Related
I'm looking at getting a games console for the whole family to use. I've looked on the internet to compare the two but so many people have different opinions as to which one to get and which one is better. People seem to be in either the Microsoft or Sony camp. I can't decide.

The reason opinion is split is, as you say, depends what camp they sit in. There's very little difference to be honest.

I've always had ps1/2/3 so tend to stick with what I know, as most do. Didn't like the old xbox but the latest one's seem good when I've had a go. Prefer xbox controllers as they seem more comfy in the hands and must say (although I've not had a go myself) the x-box kinect looks very impressive and seems to be getting rave reviews, something to take into account if you have young kids who don't want to just sit in front of the screen shooting russians in the face.

Sorry. I couldn't find an old topic. I shall have another look.

I've had them both and kept the PS3 and sold the 360. There are a few games that are only on each platform, but that aside, and the fact that the PS3 has a Blu-ray player, I guess the big difference will be if you want to play games online. If your family (and I'm sure I mean your children) have friends that use one or the other it might be better to chose the more common console.

For the family the Wii is great fun, but we have had one of those for ages yet we never, ever, seem to find time for all three of us (I just have one son) to all play together, what with homework, housework and rubbish TV to watch.

I think both machines are very reliable and both have HD so I think the choice does come down to preference or, as mentioned, what your kid's friends have.

These are just my thoughts, I don't have any specialist knowledge.

If your family is fairly young, eg under-12/13, I would probably get a Wii to be honest. Games such as Mario and Zelda and such would be easier.

However, if their friends have got a 360 or a PS3 they will most likely prefer one of them. The best thing to do would be to get your kids to tell you what their mates have as then if they wanna play online they can play together and swap games and stuff as well, which makes the whole thing more fun.

In terms of which console is "Better" then there is very very little difference, slightly better graphics on the PS3 i suppose but it doesn't make that much difference really. The PS3 also has free online gameplay, all you have to do is be connected to the internet then you can create an account and your set, with the 360 you have to pay, I think it's about 5 pounds a month. I would say the biggest decider for most people is which exclusive games they would rather play on, 360 has stuff like Halo, GoW, Forza motorsport too i think and some others, whereas PS3 has Resistance, Uncharted, and Little Big Planet.

If I were you the thing about your kids friends is the biggest decision-maker.

In terms of things for the family on 360 and PS3, they both have the same capabilities. DVDs and photos and all that.

I know this is well of topic , but i suppose the game is on both ps3 and xbox .. Has anybody played Skyrim ? My mates say it's dangerously addictive . ?

PS3 Every time.  I don't play personally but I've had so much trouble returning our kids' broken xboxes you wouldn't believe it.  The red ring of death has nearly driven me up the wall.   Never ever had a hardware problem with any Sony product.  Also, the connection fees are included in the price, so your not stung with hidden extras afterwards.

No but saw the advert for it on tv today, looks interesting might get it at some point.

    Oh and between xbox and ps3, I'd say ps3 - there's no uncharted3 on xbox :-)

I play skyrim, it IS dangerously addictive, my eyes are burning out, best game ive ever played. Surreal, caught up in another world over the weekend.
Id go with the xbox, because I like the achievement system. Little incentive to get something done in the games. Also better controllers and online, in my opinion.

Had my xbox 3 years, reliable as ever.

But, rumours are the next gen will be announced within 2 years. Not be forever before these are obsolete I imagine.

Disagree. Achievements and trophies are the same by the way. I own both consoles and bearing in mind you pay for XBOX live the online is not as good as ps3. The controls are practically the same just the dpad and analogue stick on the left are switched and the Xbox controller is bulkier.

The game changer is Kinect. For family fun its better than Wii and PS Move.

Have had an Xbox Elite since 2007 and its not had any problems at all.
Didnt need a blu-ray (as already have a stand alone) and prefered the controllers.

PS3.  I think they are marginally better than the 360.  Big advantages are online play, which almost every game has, is free with the Playstation and isn't with the 360.  Mind you, there is an increasing habit for PS3 games to come with downloadable content which comes at a premium, it's not something I do because I think it's a bit of a rip-off, but all the major titles have expansion/DLC packs which are anything from £5-15 at a time.

In the 360's favour it does have Kinect which is brilliant and the best motion sensor platform by far.  Also PS3's aren't invulnerable to breakdown, in the 4 1/2 years I've had mine it has had YLOD (yellow light of death) once, which was £80 to repair.  They do suffer from overheating and are quite noisy if you leave a game on for a while.  I really dislike the 360's controller too, not only is it bulky but it's batteries wear down very quickly, whereas the PS3 controller is light, simple classic design and rarely needs a recharge.

I know where you're coming from with all the DLC's and stuff. Was doing my career on Tiger Woods 12 and some of the events I can't enter as the courses aren't included and have to be downloaded at a cost of just over £3 each. Don't sound like much but can soon add up. I would imagine that this is the same on both platforms though.

To late for me. Definetally get it though. So much content you wont finish it for years unless you proper go for it, unlike COD where your £40 campaign is over in 5 hours.

Dazzler brings up a point, online on 360 costs. Depends how you look at it though. It costs the same as a new game so I generally overlook it. Either way, when it comes to online, all games will try to rip you off with DLC on either console.
Sometimes when im bored I end up spending a 10er on FIFA Ultimate team packs even though I dont play UT. Probably cost me 40quid.

For me, it all comes down to what one my mates have, and all my lot are 360 fanboys so I had to get it, still got the PS3 on standby though.

If anyone is thinking of switching from Xbox to any other platform, do remember to close down any direct debits.   We got stung for an extra year's connectivity by being sloppy about this.

Yeah I have both so can't really complain as I pay to play online on x box but not on ps3 lol

XBox is getting all the attention at the mo as PS3 BluRay is dead tho I do have playtv love film and iPlayer HD on the ps3 so can do all the free view plus stuff on that and get programmes such as Merlin in HD

360 loads quicker than PS3 due to DVDs reading almost twice as fast as Bluray. Blyray discs are coming down in price basically as they are not selling very well. Anyone remember mini disc the replacement for CD?

BluRay replaced HDDVD as they have a larger memory and same out put levels.
BluRays a are selling very well for example

Cars 2 shifted 1,763,626 Blu rays compared to 1,983,374 week ending 6 November.

Not bad if you ask me.

Sony has sold 43,400,000 PS3's compared to Microsofts 42,900,000 XBox's

43 Million! That is staggering when you think about it.

Dazzler - isn't the bigger memory capacity kind of redundant? Someone told me most movie releases don't take up anywhere near capacity, although I think that person worked for X-Box!!
