I assumed something had been organized in advance as we had some types with a BM flag to the left of our stand who seemed ready for the off all through the game. Although it was going gangbusters as we walked out, we turned right to the car and walked on without hassle. A Charlton bloke was striding back towards the fight with his girlfriend trying to hold him back shouting "no Malcolm...no!"
The nearest I got to any grief was some old snapper who when the final whistle went started grumbling at me and my mates about 'plastics' (not the term he used) who only turn out for the big away games. Bristol City away, I ask you!
What a day. I'm just out of shot on the left hand-side, my youngest brother and a couple of mates came with me for that one. I remember my son being very pissed off because I told he couldn't come to the game (he was 9 at the time) - I used the excuse that he was too small and wouldn't be able to see from the terraces and promised him he could come to the quarters when we won (which he did!).
But the real reason I didn't let him come was because we just knew it was going to go off, it was a rare time when we went down to Bristol and something didn't happen.
I remember those bloody skips, couldn't believe it when we came out - didn't do any harm that I was walking out next to a couple of our more 'headstrong' fans lol - and the OB didn't really even try to keep us apart. Interesting trip back to the station, and agreed with everyone else, we had it on top a fair bit that day.
Four of us went by car and got abused by City fans when we asked a copper where we could park up. We were in the right side of the away end and I went down 20 yards in the surge after Robbo's goal.
When we finally got out it was like a war zone, but had missed all the trouble. Half bricks everywhere. Took forever to get out of Bristol, traffic was a nightmare. There was a square one way system and this guy cut someone up and then one of his passengers leaned out the back door window with a 12 inch butchers knife and scraped it along the whole length of the car. We didn't try to push in and stayed in the queue after that!!
Finally got back to Bexleyheath about 9pm for a 30th birthday celebrations in Mings for the Drivers (Big William) Mrs!
I remember the stop at the services on the way down. There was a busker claiming to be blind I think and someone asked him if he could play Mull of Kintyre. If he was indeed blind he got the shock of his life when about 300 people joined in....

Yes, I remember foolishly thinking once we got away from the ground things would calm down a bit, then that happened. All in all, an "interesting" afternoon.
I've not been to Bristol since 1994 - has it changed much? Going on a stag do there in a couple of weeks - Any recommendations for good Ale Houses and Gentleman's clubs?

The bloke at the front in the Timberland is your man for strip clubs. He's always in them.
This thread brings back memories, though I don't have any specific recollections about the post match aggro. There was that picture of Garry Nelson in a wig which made it onto the front cover of VOTV I recall.
I do remember the police escort the coaches got to and fro the ground, speeding through town as all the traffic was held back seemed cool at the time!
I was on one of those coaches as well - "singing ours are bigger than yours" and all that. I remember having to run for the coaches at the end but had forgot about the Police escort. Happy days.
I remember saying to my son if you want to go to away games you mustn't tell your mum. He didn't so we carried on going to games on the Jr. Reds coach.
Great day and good memories....me and my lad certainly look older now.....he was 9 in this photo, now 31. He is wearing my Back to the Valley shirt (came down to his knees) and a flag over his shoulder about 7-8 feet to the right of Tavern in his Timberland Sweatshirt.
What a brilliant day, I remember pre satnav just 'head for the floodlights' having to turn around in a dead end near a tobacco dock and the embarrassment of 3-4 car loads of addicks having followed our scarf out the window assuming we knew the way.
There was a tear up just behind us between our own and I was surprised the equaliser was 59 mins as it felt so much later in the game.
As much trouble outside as the Bolton QF a year or two later as in it was mental,
Still a great day however and I hope my son gets to witness highs like this, if not quite so violent
Good memories, went with my father and his mate and his son, both passed away now but still go with the son. Seem to remember a snow flurry half way through the game and some burly Charlton supporter topless.
As we were walking up the road outside the ground, a few punch ups started round us. Next thing a line of around 6 police horses started galloping down the road towards us. We all dived into the nearest front garden as they passed by.
My only regret was not being able to get a ticket for the Man-U game, right Charlton cock up that was!

Remember the days when you could travel around England and the most prominent features of every distant town were a church steeple and a set of floodlight pilons. Remember when the train passed the old Den from London Bridge you could see the Palace floodlights beyond to the right of the 2 TV masts. Sorry, gone off topic
