  • I remember this too , didn't have a clue what game it was but remember the abuse we gave the driver
  • That was one of first games after i'd started driving that i drove my dadto. don't recall much of the game anymore, but i do remember it raining and raining and raining. Only time i've been to West Brom didn't leave me with a desire to return. Good atmosphere with healthy away support certainly not dampened by the weather or result.

Read without posting !! I was there first visit to the Hawthorns for me. Remember the toilets had no roof !!

Was there. The stand was so low you couldn't see the ball once it went above head height.

So who went to Bradford away?

Yes, I drove up. I remember my my mate Kev Gillett standing up out of the sun roof waving his scarf as we passed the supporters coach on the way home, celebrating like we had one hand on the cup already...

I went to Bradford. After the game some local yoof came into the pub we were in and offered out a couple of charlton fans in there. There were about 10 of them outside waiting for what hey thought was the three or four blokes they'd offered out, so were a little bit "surprised" when about a dozen of us walked out together.

Remember a charlton fella coming up to us in the pub and saying, "your charlton aren't you? Well we're all leaving together and I WANT NO RUNNERS, OK?"

Remember that evening Bradford replay at the half-empty echoey Odsall stadium, was it?
Good 3-0 win inspired by Robert Lee.

Spent half the night at Birmingham New Street station, getting back to Cornwall about 9 o'clock in the morning - just in time to start work.
Things you do to follow Charlton!

I was there - remember it really well. Recall being devastated when Bolder wasn't playing. Interesting anecdote. After getting back from the West Midlands myself and a few mates went to our then local - the Prince of Wales - in Upper Belvedere. We were talking about the game and moaning about Walshie missing a penalty only - to our amazement - see Walshie and Mike Salmon at the bar drinking. Had a long chat with them. Walshie seemed pissed and at the end of the night said 'right where are we going now?' which in Upper Belvedere is a strange thing to ask. At one stage it looked like he and Salmon were going to come back to my flat. I remember thinking that - as fans - we were devastated about being knocked out but that they didn't seem especially bothered.

you could have taken them to the Victoria, it was always open late for those that were ITK

all I remember from the game was the puddle goal and getting wet. but a lot of beer in brum pre match probably had a lot to do with that.

yep, i was there - big terrace, rain and mud and as others have said - the fa cup meant something then - big shame the way it's gone now. Blackburn away, Leeds, Bristol City, Man Utd, Spurs in the 80's - they are some of the great memories - now its treated like a reserve match. Needs sorting out. 4th european spot should go to it and they should find a way of allocating some of the sky money to reward for progressing in it. If nothing else, the non prem clubs will take it seriously then.

I think I was there, were there some of our fans with their tops off at the front?

It is Oldham with WBA second.
  • I was at WBA absolutely soaked through, my mate drove home and it was lashing down quite a few near misses, got home in time to see the puddle score!!!
  • Yes my Dad and I were at both wet West Brom games, Can't remember what year it was but Swindon away was horrid, seated end without a roof, it lashed down for 90 minutes !!

'98, part of the end of season run that put us in the play offs.

Oh yes. The puddle. I was behind the goal, wailing in frustration. Football-wise, the season was a bit of a disaster, because all our 'staying up' heroics of previous years came to an end. We went down with Willmaul, did we not? But the club's fortunes were on the rise, as we were gearing up for the battle of all battles - at the ballot box, with The Valley Party. The team went down, but the supporters took on the politicians and won the day.

I was there with Mr W who was my fiancé at the time. Our first date had been the Kettering match the year before. Vividly remember the penalty.
