The Sopranos (final episode)

  • The link I posted has quite a lot on the Godfather stuff (on page 3) - not just the gun in the toilet scene

    For example...

In The Godfather films, oranges often symbolize violence or death for the Corleone family. In The Godfather, Don Vito Corleone is nearly assassinated as he buys oranges at a fruit stand. Later in the film, he dies with an orange in his mouth. Sonny Corleone is gunned down at a toll booth right after passing a billboard for oranges. In The Godfather Part III, Michael Corleone dies while he is holding an orange. Early on in the final episode, Tony is eating an orange as he ignores Carmela’s question, “Are you being careful?”(Tony apparently prefers fruit as he later says at the crew’s safe house that the one good thing about hiding is that he has not “had a green vegetable in a week”). An orange cat stares incessantly at the murdered Christopher’s picture. Paulie is convinced the cat is a bad omen. In the final scene in Holsten’s, the small orange cat has mutated into a large orange tiger on the back wall mural in Holsten’s (a back wall created by Chase and his production team). In one shot, the tiger hangs over Tony’s right shoulder, exactly where “Man in Member’s Only Jacket” will be when he comes out of the bathroom to shoot Tony.

  • Sorry to re-raise an old thread, but I just completed a Sopranos rewatch, and have to say, I now believe 100% that Tony was killed in the diner.

There are a variety of clues as mentioned on here, but the most obvious is the way the final scene is shot. Every time the bell on the diner door rings, we get a Tony POV shot. The final time is Meadow entering, at which point we get a Tony POV shot of blackness. Nothingness.

Realising this made me feel quite shocked. It's not the audience being whacked, it's not ambiguous - the clues are there for us to work it out. Tony definitely died! The link on the previous page has a shed-load of evidence to support it too. Freaked me out a little, even after all this time. What an incredible show.
  • I watched this show and at first was disappointed with the ending, but now think it was the best and maybe only ending. I do find it funny how everyone speculates as the directors have said that they deliberately left it open. So nobody can say I believe 100%... It is open to debate and your imagination. Chase has said that he will never actually reveal what was meant to happen. So there isn't really a right or wrong answer. For the record, if I had to stick money on it, then I would say he would have been killed. But he didn't get killed.

of course it is ambiguous - because it went black with nothing 100% clear cut.

A classic CL ner-nikky-ner-ner response if ever there was one. The point being that if you look closely, it's not as ambiguous as it might appear at first, if at all. If you want to look closely. I'm guessing you don't.

“If you look at the final episode really carefully, it's all there." The show runner David Chase said of the finale. If you bother to read the supporting links, you'll struggle to maintain the ambiguity argument. That's the whole point.

"There had been indications of what the end is like. Remember when Jerry Torciano was killed? Silvio was not aware that the gun had been fired until after Jerry was on his way down to the floor. That’s the way things happen: It’s already going on by the time you even notice it." - David Chase
  • Last episode on tonight on channel 108. Going to record it this time. Watch it several times and see if I can make sense of it.

not going to argue with someone who likes to make such knobish comments but what I meant was that the ending was not 100% clear cut. Chase himself has hinted towards the ending without clarifying what is meant to happen. For that reason, nobody can say for certain what was supposed to happen in the end.
  • Saw this last night....have to say, very disappointed in that ending.
  • Another re run starts next Wednesday.
  • Interesting ending.

Don't forget if you need your fix of NJ, new series of Boardwalk Empire starts Saturday.

  • For me The Soprano's was the best ever TV show (personal opinion) apparently the writer of the final episode has said that all the clues to what happens are in the the episode you just have to work it out. Unlike some I think is was very clever because the strong inference was that Tony died but it has left it open enough for a return if they so desire. As much as I love it I think it's best left as it is.
  • I took it as he died in the restroom, but it wouldn't take too much imagination to pen further series.

Much more plausible than Bobby Ewing in the shower, that's for sure...............................

I make knobbish comments, true. But you said you weren't going to argue! And you did. Be good for you to look at the quotes and argument put forward though. Chase has said more than that...

It's only ambiguous if you weren't paying attention.
  • Still getting emails about this Can't seem to get rid of it as a bookmark....help needed.

After watching the whole series on sky Atlantic, it is the best series IMO of all time, consistent through out and great characters.......have to say it is a disappointing ending the way it cuts out, i'm guessing TS dies, as the conversation with bobby when they say it all goes black is the obvious answer to the outcome.....1 bonus was phil's death!getting his head run over was a nice touch lol.
  • If you have never seen the Sopranos, then Sky Atlantic are starting again tonight from the very first episode.

Was on at 9, but will be repeated again at 1.30am, so set your planner.

Really tempted to go through the whole thing again

Funnily enough I just switched it on. Amazing how different they all look and how different Tony sounds.
Just watched the entire series over 4 months but could happily start again. Awesome stuff.
  • The scary thing is when it was first filmed, James Gandolfini was effectively the same age as I am now.
  • You've lived a hard life AFKA!

Goodfellas is on itv 4 now. Didn't realise how many of the cast are in the sopranos. Knew dr melphi, chrissy and Phil were in goodfellas but didn't know pussy, paulie, carmella's mum and a couple of others were.
  • The best series on television.
I watched them back to back on DVD as well and came to the conclusion Tony S was a repugnant piece of shit,as were most of the characters.

Not long now then AFKA and you will be the boss of kidbrook and Eltham

  • Just finished watching The Sopranos, brilliant series, brilliant ending. I love ambiguous endings that leave it to the viewer to put their own interpretation on things - like a proper piece of art.

Personally, the Tony is shot theory rings truest for me although some of the other theories are fun.
  • A summary of what happened, in my opinion, in easy-to-digest picture form!
