Homophobia in football

  • Why do we need laws to enforce right and wrong? Or religion for that matter?
Why isn't it good enough that it just not nice therefore don't do it?
Because people can't be trusted. But the rest of us don't want to live in a nanny state and therefore don't want rules abouit every single thing we should or shouldn't say.
Therefore the most offensive things are legislated for and the rest aren't.

    Because they're not illegal.
But why is that illegal and abuse to people based on weight, height, etc not?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2089536/Muslim-fanatics-called-execution-gays-face-seven-years-jail.html

Because in most cases people aren't threatened with death for being fat or ginger as in the case above.

If it got to the stage where people were beaten up in the streets or told they deserved to die/will go to hell for being red haired then maybe it would be a valid comparison but they don't so it ain't. And before anyone asks yes redheaded and proud of it!
  • I think with British people, when a topic comes up that people are uncomfortable with, or arent too sure how to address it, we try to make light of the situation so to speak, and make a joke. Some can be in bad taste, but i just think thats a reflex action

Think you'll find in plenty of places, It don't matter if you're small, tall, fat, gay or ginger etc People will always find something to take the piss out of.

Have defiently read in papers before about overweight kids and ginger kids being bullied to the point that they attempt suicide etc.

Seems to me the countrys becoming offended over everything now.

Did anyone watch that 'Gay footballers' programme, They asked a number of straight Brighton fans whether they thought that 'Can See you holding hands' song is offensive and the majority said Yes. They asked a gay famous Arsenal fan who said it was funny and witty and more of a joke.
  • Because they're not illegal.

Awaiting for the backlash to the recent proposals by the newly-elected Muslim mayor of Newham (I think) to shut down a gay venue by revoking their licence by classing it as a sex establishment....the idea originated from the local mosque apparently.
  • Its depressingly predictable on here, that the moment any threads are started wanting any sort of discussion about homophobia then the cheap jokes start. I expect twenty years ago this was the case when racism was discussed
Funny ain't it the double standards - I don't mean on here, but in general.

On Twitter there are black Liverpool fans re-tweeting funny songs from the game yesterday, "we can see you holding hands" etc...meanwhile prior to that they were frothing over Terry etc.

Why is one type of 'abuse' ok and the other not?

Last week about 4 Millwall fans were nicked in the ground for homophobic chanting and reported in the local paper...yet no widespread condemnation of LFC.

That is right sparrows, double standards in it's entirety, if you are caught saying anything racist at all you get arrested, shouldn't this also be the case for saying anything about homosexuality with the intent on causing someone to be upset? discrimination, prejudice and abuse should be handled the same in everything; sexism, racism, fatism and against gay people equally.
Its depressingly predictable on here, that the moment any threads are started wanting any sort of discussion about homophobia then the cheap jokes start.
Is disapproval of homosexuality on religious or moral grounds homophobia or a perfectly reasonable right to an alternative opinion?

    Discuss.
I believe so Len. I don't feel that religious grounds are an excuse. Not a lot of people on here know this about me, but I am a practising Christian, I attend church regularly as do my children. I have heard some ridiculous things said in church about disapproval of 'gayness' sometimes they talk about it as a disease. I always fight the cause and speak my mind sexuality is about who you are not who you choose to be. They self rightious people in the church that come out with all the 'God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve' Crap really get on my nerves. The bible to some people is a hand held manual but if they really were to practice what they preach they will be churning their own butter and baking their own bread. Times move on and people evolve as do our minds and our rights and our freewill. God did make Adam and Eve but he also blessed human beings with sexual feelings and desires, eyes to see, ears to hear, hands to touch and the amazing brain to think and and act as you wish.

God made us the way we are and if we are gay God intended us to be that way. God loves everyone and any Christian that says otherwise is not a real Christian.
Well he's got a lot to answer for then.

...and i guess thats why , the term homophobia has got phobia in it, its a response to people being frightened or somehow threatened by difference. this response many would feel, particularly if your on the receiving end, as being abusive rather then just a bad joke.

  • & when was the last time a player or opposition fan was threatened with death because they may have been suspected of being gay?

It's hardly football fans in the stands that are the baying mob of queer hating yobs is it.
  • Because they're not illegal.

Would be wrong (see answer to Len's question above) but is it actually true. Read the Sub-standards story through to the end and it seems that not only is Ken Livingstone hoping they stay open nothing has actually been said.

Agreed. In light of the subject matter, I don't think this is the thread for jokes. Please keep to the subject at hand. If you don't have anything of substance to say here, don't say anything.

I think it was a joke about Millwall as opposed to the topic. And Millwall are fair game.

    wrong thread...

  • And you all wonder why no footballer will admit to being gay. Just read some of the shite rubbish you have posted above. This is the 21st century, I had hoped that your crude innuendos & nudge nudge wink wink jokes had died out long ago, but sadly it seems some of our fans are still living in the victorian era.

Gays do not all look like Larry Grayson or Fatima Whitbread. Next time you're at The Valley look around you, for all you know you could be the only "straight" in your row. Scary isn't it???

agree with your first sentiment. Your second point is quite frankly outrageous.
  • Is there much homophobic chanting at football? As I can't think of any currently playing 'out' footballers, there's no situation where it might happen. And no I don't count the Brighton teasing, which is generally on the level of chanting sheep shagger at welsh fans. Or us chanting ' we pay your benefit' or 'what's it like to have no job' at Liverpool fans. Which compared to what is shouted at the officials is quite mild...

If there is homophobia in football, surely it is within the clubs themselves, where footballers may feel frightened to come out for fear that they will be shunned by their teammates? And the only way to quantify the problem if by counting the number of footballers who've come out after retiring, when surely they would feel free to speak about it. Until that happens we have no idea. If 50 former footballers came out, then we'd know there was a major problem, if only 1 came out then it's likely that the number of gay footballers was very low.

Actually not that outrageous my male cousin's boyfriend is a norwich fan, they are part of a group if 14 gay and lesbian couples and for his birthday last year they went to a Nordic game altogether with a meal and drinks included. Imagine there being fifteen seats in that row. Can't say he ever complained about stick from the norwich fans

Fatima Whitbread's not gay. She fancies Peter Andre.
