Didn't realise until i just read this that Rochester is no longer a city. Sorry to all of you who dwell in the medway towns but i have always found the majority of the place a total slum, especially Luton. The Luftwaffe could have done us a huge favour if they didn't just target the docks.
Erm Woolwich, and pretty much all the area around Blackheath and Greenwich. Medway isn't always the prettiest but I'm more than happy living here compared to 95% of London. More history than you can shake a Pilgrim at, just 99% of people in the South East haven't a clue about the first settlements and amazing countryside in Medway.
Well, as I don't (and never have) lived in London.....................
I'm a Gravesend lad, a place also steeped in history such as pocohontas
I think it depends where you can afford to live. Unfortunately when we bought our house we could only afford the wrong side of the river in strood. Everyday I wake up and wonder if a straw dogs event will occur! (Our only other choice was luton road in chatham but the thought of prostitutes trading outside our front door put the wife off).

More history in London and people here don't care about Medway because they had no need to go there. It's like not knowing the history of a town like Swindon.
Good post from Carter about the wastage from the council. My council has wasted loads of money but knocking down buildings and replacing them with crappy parks.
if they spent all the money on trying to further integrate the towns
I think the people of the Medway have tried their hardest to integrate....bunch of inbred backward looking oddballs.
Thats not a nice things to say when over 2000 fans travel up from the Medway ...pretty insulting
I'd hazard a guess many of them aren't born & inbred, sorry, bred, in Medway...majority must be good honest salt of the earth SE Londoners that are trying their best to raise the average IQ, morals & living standards of the area.
I was born in Strood as my parents were too poor to buy in Bexley. I left when I was one and haven't been back since. (We left Strood as a family that is. I didn't move out at the age of one.)

Nice one. Rochester being a capital of the Cantiaci way before any settlement in London, and just down the river from Rochester was the first major Roman battle against the Celtic tribes. Vespasian, one of the greatest Roman emperors fought there. A Royal Naval dockyard for only around 400 years. A medieval Knight Templars House. Charles II sleeping in Rochester before his restoration. The most beautiful river delta in the SE, often painted by Turner: and loved by him.
I never opened a scoring system on who's got more history. But I suppose if you class interest in the amount of Nandos and Apple stores there are, I doubt you have any idea of the history of vast areas of England, just live in your very dull mind.
Judging by some of the comments on this thread quite a few of the people on here live in 5 Bed detached houses no where near a shit hole, some really sweeping statements. Poor form 2/10
Rochester is a city, Medway is a river, St Asaphs is a village, Crystal Palace is a former greenhouse. Why do people have to keep messing around with these things.

Doing time in Medway, I can be a bit tongue in cheek about its various merits or perceived lack of them. What has struck me in my time down here, is the potential of it's location, It's history and sense of times gone by. It is just that this has been overlaid with a very thick film of decay, under investment and the wanton neglect of local and national government. Medway is basically a northern town plonked down in the South East. Before Christmas I had the good(?) fortune to take a course on the 3rd floor of Ancorage House in Chatham, located on the largest u-bend of the Medway river. While aimlessly staring out of the window it was hard to imagine how such a magnificent prospect could of been so cocked up. Anywhere else in Northern Europe this environment would of been developed tastefully and Homogonously over the centuries and been nurtured as a place for the public to stroll aimlessly in the mild summer nights along riverside boulevards to the sound of a wurlitzer or oompah bands. Because of it's hard industrial and military history though we are left with a neglected detritus of industrial sheds and chicken shops, populated with an ugly and under achieving social hotchpotch of humanity.
Back from knocking the door of the councillors house. Told him in a very polite way he was responsible for this waste of money and asked him roughly how much it cost (considering they spent a fortune on re-branding all the recycling bins, street signs and one thing and another I would imagine a lot.
He gave a load of flannel about Medway being deserved of city status (like I said, Rochester is a city) I asked what city status gets me that just plain old 'Chatham' doesn't and he went red, with embarrassment I hope. Told him I want to see where he is going to make up this waste from and will make a habit of keeping in touch with him.
And before any other Medway Towns bashers start up, every town centre from here to Somerset is pretty shite.
Dartford and Orpington town centres are on a par with Gillingham and Chatham except maybe Orpington has more discount warehouse type of shops and more obnoxious traffic wardens.
Orpington does have a decent selection of restaurants strangely, just no decent pubs, shops and the people that limp up & down the high street seem a little confused.
I have to admit though, that Eltham High Street now has it's fair share of oddballs, dressed in some shocking clobber.

Don't forget the 15 year olds pushing their prams down Orpington High Street! Agree with you about the restaurants though, surprisingly there are a few places you can get a very good meal
technically Sittingbourne is in Swale not Medway but it is close enough. I love living here moving here from Bexley was the best thing we have ever done, I for one will never look back.
