Never saw that one coming. I thought he might be ok when we signed him but in the limited amount of game time he's had his long term stay looked less and less likely. With Hayes not back until after Tuesday? Waggy now becomes the option to play alongside Yann if BWP gets a knock or just behind in a 5 man midfield if either striker gets injured. SCP will have a plan and the problem will resolve itself sooner rather than later I am sure.
  • Sorry if i'm being harsh , i know we didn't see a lot of game time with him on the pitch , but he didn't seem to offer very much when he was on the pitch, am i alone in thinking this?

Sending Clarke to Crawley is the best transfer we've made this season
  • It was clear that Clarke was destined not to make a contribution, but this is worrying. The player recruitment last summer was inspired and augered well for the future, but January's performance was poor; the Clarke signing was "odd", Russell hasn't played and Haynes is not good enough for the Championship. What was the thinking?

If Jimenez has real ambition for the Club - and I believe he does - then this coming summer could again be a very busy one. We'll need to hope that Powell's Midas touch returns though because right now he appears to have lost it.
  • Am I the only one here who thinks that he didn't get a fair crack of the whip?

Thought he showed like he could get into good positions and with a bit of game time might have scored a few goals for us, don't forget he has played most of his career at higher levels than this.

Can't understand why he became so unpopular so quick, but thats some of our fans for you.

Nevertheless the deal is done now and I would personally love to see us get Benik Afobe in on loan from Arsenal, would be a great signing!

No what we did see of him wasn't that good. He seemed to be wearing lead boots at first but then again was he fit? Thereafter he did little to impress in his cameo roles but he needed a run of games for us to be able to make a full assessment which he was never going to get with BWP, Yann and the Haynes ahead of him. SCP would have seen enough in training though.

Now he's gone & I doubt he'll be back. I would like to say that he is a strange looking bloke.
    Weird souless eyes. Expressionless face.
    Is it just me ?
No it's not just you Covered End. Clarke also had weird soulless eyes and an expressionless face:-)

In a way I don't really care if he has had a fair crack of the whip, what worries me is that we have brought in both Hayes and Clarke and arguably Euell and within a short period loaned them out again. Not forgetting the West ham guy from last season who Powell was told by Dyer, the guys former coach, not to touch him with a barge pole. BWP was already in the pipeline so of four forwards brought in only one, kermogant has worked out and some of us question the release of Benson. Its been a great season and will almost certainly continue to be so but there are concerns and recruitment of strikers is one of them.

I hope we bring in a striker who can give the squad a lift and help to get us to the championship.

Should never have let Benson go, one of CP's few mistakes in the transfer market this season.

He always wore gloves when on the pitch. Enough said.

  • Think people are reading a bit too much into this. Clarke came in when Benson who was not going to feature left and I think was a bit of a gamble by SCP based perhaps on a decent run of goals at Chesterfield. I doubt Hayes will return because like Benson I don't think SCP fancies him. Haynes looks a decent player to me and I expect a striker to come in on loan this week to bolster the forward line.

no he was absolute kakpo and i'm glad he's gone cos it means the small chance he could have been on the pitch for us is null and void

Revisionism, Benson wasn't going to play, had lost his mojo at the club, and needed a move

I get this. I just don't think his ability cut it with Chris and maybe his attitude wasn't good as well (he does have history). Why keep a player around who is deadwood. I think Chris probably feels he has enough with bwp and Yann with backup from our scoring midfield. We also have the versatile Waggy and we can bring Hayes back if need be. That should be enough to get us over the finish line. I don't think Chris sees Euell as an option anymore.

deffo don't want waggy up front either , it was excrutiatingly painful watching him and hayes up front in a couple of the cup games , he is much better arriving in the box later from out wide

get hayes back as back up

and i agree that benno should have had more of a chance with a footballing team around him rather than last seasons misfits

Are we writing off Danny Haynes already? I think he looks like he's got something to offer. Certainly more than Clarke

Doesn't concern me. Strikers at this level have a very high turnover rate unless your name is Rhodes but even then someone is likely to snap him up him sooner or later. So basically as a manager there will always be an element of gambling when you sign someone like Clarke. Didn't SCP say at Bromley on Tuesday that it was a late decision to sign Yann which has paid off and BWP had doubts over his knees when we signed him - another gamble that has paid off. Clarke hasn't, Euell can no longer be classed as a striker and Hayes may be back revitalised. Haynes is ok but unfortunately injured, so what's the big deal? Lets wait and see what transpires maybe with a loan signing.

Goal scorers do not come cheap, we got BWP but only after Reading decided not to take a punt on him, Kermorgant was not wanted by Leicester and we brought in Clarke who had 9 goals at Chesterfield in L1 and at a club who look like they are heading for relegation. A fair gamble, but I presume on closer inspection he hasn't fitted in with CP's plans.

At this level and even funded by Mysteron money we can't expect to get CCC forwards, anyone half decent is going to end up at a better club where the pay is going to be much better, even if they sit on the bench.

From what I saw of Clarke he offered very little, so no loss.
As for Benson, I think it would have been better to use him as the sub on the bench rather than Clarke, but I don't think Powell rated him and he saw the swap deal with Clarke as a good opportunity to let Benson get on with his career whilst bringing in another striking option - seemed like a good idea at the time...

We still got the better of the swap deal as Clarke still has a resell value. We just need to find a taker...

In all honesty, he's clearly a good player as he scored for a poor chesterfield side. Just needs game time and to be the main man. He won't get that with us.

There was a thread on here or not606 listing the number of players who've played for us since we left the PL, and the number of strikers was ridiculous, with all sorts of panic buys and loans.

I don't know why we signed Clarke, as all he did was push Hayes underservedly down the ladder. I wasn't sure why we signed Euell, as he hasn't played up front for years. I would have happily kept Benson as back up for BWP. Imagine last October if BWP had picked up a serious injury, then Benson would have been the obvious replacement, as the 'goalscoring' striker.

BWP and Kermit are good enough for Scunthorpe game but going into the final run with only them two, haynes' dodgey hamstrings and Paul Hayes (if recalled) is a bit of a risk. I hope we are getting someone else in. Question is, who wants to come to us and sit on the bench?
