Sorry, but I thought Rodney's post was absolute tosh.
Just because you condemn Barton, does that mean you want a happy clappy soulless crowd.
The ref and the linesman didn't see Tevez take a pop at Barton, that's why Barton got sent off and not Tevez. And do you think Tevez hit Barton without provocation? Barton gobs off to everyone trying to wind them up. It worked and it backfired on him. Tough.
Neither Fat Franny Lee throwing and missing nor Barton losing his temper represents the soul of football. The people standing in the pishing rain at Yeovil do. And that's not going to change.
Its this kind of b****ks that has led to Ingerland being a laughing stock and unable to seriously compete in the International scene. Thuggish sloggers kicking each other up in the air in the name of "manly passion".

Mmmm.......and we didn't have thuggish cloggers in the 60s when England were a bit of a power? Barton was out of order, got sent off and will do the time........it's happened before, you know.
Dissapointed in Richards and Lescott helping Barton out in all this.
Completely disagree, they acted to calm him down and get him off the pitch before any more trouble flared up. Imagine if other players had got involved, e.g. if Aguero had retaliated...
So when someone gives Rodney a wack on a Sunday morning he's going to see it as part of the game? I don't think so!
Nope youve missed the point. If and when you got whacked when I played (practically every week in the hangover leagues I played in) you'd give a bit back then get on with the game and usually end up shaking hands at the end and you'd get a card and a fine. It's a cotact sport and it's inevitable that tempers will flare....Im not talking about the likes of Muscat who deliberately injured opponents or the sort of wronguns that break peoples noses or knock refs out during games im talking about what happened on sunday which was pretty much akin to what you would see in the sandpit between a couple of rowdy toddlers.
Nobody died and there weren't headlines in the Newshopper saying that Saturday and sunday football is dragging suburban South East London to hell in a hand cart.
And whilst Im not saying it's good it's the mass media outrage shock and over dramatic condemanation that follows that i find hysterical in every sense.
Vincenzo....fair enough if you think my post is tosh. It would be dull if we all thought about life the same way.
Think Barton is a bit of a pillock generally and he let himself and teammates down but I certainly dont dislike him . But at the same time I wont shit my pants because a footballer has had a bit of handbags on a football pitch.

no chance of Aguero retaliating, he went down like he'd been shot
Whatever Shearer is or isn't - his job is to comment and most of us will have sympathy with his comments on this subject. For me - 3 match ban for sending off - additional 3 matches for kick and additional 3 matches for attempted head butt plus an additional 5 matches for bringing the game into disrepute.
I think clubs should seriously consider whether they should employ characters like this.
The red card shown will be a 4 match ban because he gets an additional game by virtue of already having been sent off this season. There are then two further red card offences outside the referee's jurisdiction which might reasonably be attributed a 5 and 6 match ban if the same rules applied. That's 15 games before you even consider a disrepute charge (and why wouldn't you take his tweets into consideration too?).
It's one thing to use an elbow, quite another to deliberately attack two opponents having been sent off with the intention, according to his twitter, of trying to get one of their players sent off. It's not as if it was heat of the moment, it was all premeditated, even with the Tevez elbow he'd had time to consider his reaction - it wasn't knee jerk.
But he'll get an 8 game ban because the FA/FAPL don't deal in common sense.
Why do people act outraged....it's football....it's been turned into a soap opera the game over the past few years where no one can even fart without it making the back and oft front pages. It's a competitive sport played by blokes full of aggression and adrenalin and there will be handbags from time to time.
I make him right...tevez hit him first so fair enough for him having a pop back. No worse than John Prescott chinning the mulleted peasant who threw the egg at him but dont recall the carnation milk aficinado being labelled scum.
Will everyone be happy when the game is played in front of happy clappy crowds all sat next to each other patting each others backs and having pleasant "banter" whilst rooting for dull footballers with about as much charm and charisma as a pair of Steve Davis's socks.
The game is fast losing its soul with each passing season and the constant "appalled from Tunbridge Wells" and political correctness espoused by the hyporcritical media will turn it into a twee and bland past time on a par with indoor bowls.
Funny how in the light of everything yesterday Franny Lee was there to see his beloved Citeh win the league and was rightly praised and lauded but it didnt dawn on anyone that he and his generation made Barton look like a nun.
But the reason we remember Franny Lee and Norman Hunter going at it is precisely because it's the exception not the rule. You talk as if there's no middle ground between running battles and sterile football. The game can be - and always has been - competitive without the need for people to assault each other. And the sort of stuff Barton was doing at the Etihad got Duncan Ferguson locked up. It wasn't a knee jerk reaction, he chose to elbow Tevez, he chose to sucker kick Aguero and he chose to put a head in Kompany's face.
I'd rather see the game filled with competitive professionals like Kompany than see one 'player' like Barton; comparisons with Norman Hunter are an insult to Hunter.
When I played football, I didn't mind the hard stuff, but have never been a fan of the stupid stuff. Barton was playing in a massively important game for his club - if he had got sent off for a mistimed, over- committed challenge- fair enough - but to get sent off for what he did let his team mates down. There is a difference in football being a man's game than a thug's game. What he did after getting the card was shameful and unproffesional and he has history.
If you want to make the point about football becoming more sterile, it is a valid one, but isn't appropriate for this thread, which is more about focussing on a total idiot. I certainly wouldn't miss Mr Barton, I don't think he has anything positive to contribute to the game.
But at the same time I also find it enjoyable seeing your bartons, balotellis, savages & even our own Matty svensson on the footy pitch. Even matty s used to like a sly kick or headbutt every now and then.
Im sorry but I actually had a right giggle watching Barton try to take on the city team. Keep it coming
For those who find it 'entertaining' and come out with rubbish such as 'you need characters in the game'.....Consider this - would you be saying the same thing had it happened to Charlton, on the final day, in a relegation battle?

Completely agree - twatish but not unusual or exceptional , well perhaps exceptionally dumb, but that's our Joey...
as for being a bit of a power in the 60s, lets not forget our 13th man ;0)
I remember the Lee-Hunter scrap, the commentator and Jimmy Hill going on about what a disgrace it was etc, etc, everybody else thought it was hilarious. They got banned then got on with it, nowadays it's the end of civilization as we know it.
a twat for not being a complete girl when it comes to football is it??? See if people cared as much about the diving twats as they did about joey barton givin someone a tap on the back of a leg maybe it wouldnt be full of cheating scum!!!
i can just about understand giving shearer some stick but he wants to lay off lineker. absolute legend of a man.
I like him as much as the next man, but the Lineker point was a good one - I doubt very much there are many footballers out there who have more News Of The World front page stories hiding in the closet that never quite came out. I'd love to know why... does anyone know? Was/ is Lineker best pals with all the editors?
He may be on the money but he was also trying to deflect from his own actions as GL rightly pointed out. How can you expect Shearer, who is paid to comment, not to comment. And his comment only reflects what most of us think.
being little bigger than a midget is almost certainly part of his problem with temper tantrums .. it also makes him 'box office' .. as has been said on here by others, he does keep things interesting and lively. Perhaps he's not one for the 'football purist' though, one who still believes in the 'corinthian spirit'
Hard to believe that apparently qpr are paying barton 80k a week, what were they thinking? I hope they do the decent thing and kick him straight out the door.
Bring back the Tommy Smith, Ron Harris, Billy Bremner, Peter Storey, Dave Mackay type of player. I woder if Tevez et al would try a cheekly little dig at them. Nothing wrong with hardmen, or a bit of biff. Games gone soft, just like society

Not in a million years would you.

Or maybe that should be Peter "Psycho" Pan.
