I know nothing about cycling, but the cycle shop in Bexleyheath is run by a Charlton fan..........if you're local then maybe start there.

    Buy a Brompton.

Menstrals are very good I'm told.

Think, he wants to used it, four weeks every month.

I ride a Giant Defy Fad, very light road/racing bike, not full carbon but carbon front forks and a great buy for less than 1k.

My first road bike was a Specialized Allez. Got the Elite 2010 version, alu frame, carbon forks. Great ride.
I upgraded to a Cube carbon and havent looked back since but spent very nearly £2k.

May be worth you look at the Boardman range of carbon bikes in Halfords. Great bikes, just a shame about the customer service and set up in the store. If you get one, take it to you local bikes shop and get them to look over it first!!!

Am about to upgrade my 2010 Allez. Am seriously interested in the Cube Peloton Race 2012. Can get one for £900. How are you finding the Cube? Any thoughts on the Peloton range? Cant stretch to a Cube agree unfortunately.

Halfords in Charlton will build a Boardman to your own spec, i recently saw a single speed race bike for commuting, looked good and they charged £500.

£2k for a bike, you can get a car cheaper.

I got the Cube Agree Race 2011 and its a fab ride. Full Ultegra, just upgraded to Mavic Kysrium SL Wheels and its goes like the clappers. Smooth, responsive and most importantly as light as anything for climbing. Unfortunately, I broke one of my shifters last weekend, the day before I rode Box Hill with my club, so had to ride the Allez and bloody hell it feels so different.

I havent ridden the Peloton range but its an alu frame with carbon forks job isnt it? Surely that isnt much of an upgrade from an Allez?

If you can hold back a few months, you'll surely be able to pick an agree up in the sales!

Any of the 'main brands' will do you a good bike for £1k or thereabouts... Cycling Weekly had a road test a few weeks back and I think the Boardman came out on top... Specialised Allez good as John and Clem say... Don't worry about lightest etc, find one that you like riding.. I have 4 bikes, ranging in price from £600 (original Boardman) to one more than 10x that price (Colnago M10 with full super record for the geeks out there), but the bike I like riding best is a titanium framed 'every day' bike, as it is just so comfortable. Safe cycling.

Get a Boardman, for the money you'll get a hell of a lot more the on a Specialized or Trek.

Canondale CAAD. Excellent ally frame off which to hang Shimano 105 or Ultegra kit if you can afford it.

That's exactly what I was thinking Steve.

Bikers, just what are you getting for your money; is there some incredible new technology that you're paying for or is it the huge rip-off that it looks? I must say, you all seem very calm and accepting of the prices.

It's a top end bike. You can get a house for less than a top end car etc.

I'm glad it is a top end bike, I'd hate to think there were more expensive one's. That's essentially asking though FOD, what's a top end bike got that a bog standard one hasn't that justifies the price tag?

Got myself a boardman hybrid pro and I absolutely love it. Mind you I would have a look at the boardman crx if I was you

If you can get a BH I'd go for it. I've had one for 5 years and hasn't let me down. Carbon forks, alloy frame rides like a dream, and within your budget.
Also, I'd recommend a decent store like Sidcup Cycles or similar. Halfords, Evans have their uses, but for customer service and servicing the local retailer is best IMO.
Pays your money, takes your choice.

Looks closely at the wording of the Cycling Scheme agreement too, I think there are caveats in it about ownership.

Cannondale Synapse. Should be able to get the 105 version for a grand. Great bike imo, very confortable smooth ride.
