I won't name the sportsperson concerned as we only met once and I don't have that person's permission. Surfice to say the person regularly plays for England and is a full time sportsperson, the funding was for physiotherapy.

SE9 I don't have one but possibly to have been not to have given a private security company money but to have brought the troops home from Afganistan, saved all the money of the war and used our own fully trained people to provide security.

All Thaid Up - yes I stand corrected, I should have picked another minor sport.

Stu - don't believe in private messages for public discussions so hope I have answered you as best I can.

Now all I can say is

    COME ON MURRAY
  • Sorry LL but you can't just say "bring the troops back".

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the wars in afghan and Iraq they are nothing to do with the Olympics.
  • A full time bowls player..... Yeah..... Ok

Former world number one Andy Thompson has to finance himself by selling equipment.

  • I still think £20bn for two weeks of a collection of sports nobody really cares about is ridiculous.

All the businesses that would have had to be relocated to build all the extra buildings probably don't appreciate it either
  • 'Nobody cares about'
Do you live under the stairs?

Sorry I don't understand. For Physiotherapy you say ? Training to be a physio or in need of a Physios help. Either way there are hundreds of Physios in training who don't get any funding from the lottery and if he is in need of physio what has that got to do with any funding ?

  • Who and what sports that are elite have had their funding withdrawn ? Examples please.

I only know of one, as I have only met one sports person, and that is one GB's foremost indoor bowls players. Now that might be a minority sport to you but then skeet shooting is a minority sport to me.

The shooters had funding withdrawn after Beijing. The bloke who won the Gold is funded by a friend.
  • Thats armed daylight robbery
  • He's stated he only met the bloke once - me thinks he doesn't know the whole story. According to this indoor bowls has actually had its funding increased for the years 2009-13 http://eiba.co.uk/bda/bda-launch.php

Do you know where the Olympics is being hosted and what it's doing for that area ? I bet your "businesses" couldn't believe their luck.

The war and the Olympics cost a hell of a lot of money that our country cannot afford so yes Henry I can and I will say it. With the money saved by ending the war we can then afford the Olympics and maybe cut back on the current level of austerity.

If they can put 10 carriages on during this period why not normally- suggest we all write some letters i rarely get a seat in the mornings when i train it

this has been done cutting some services for the duration of the games.

Big improvements will come with the extra platforms at London Bridge for Thameslink (extra bridge already in place at Borough Market). New track at Bermondsey will allow trains to pass under tracks rather than have to wait for a gap in the service.

The dripping water will go with a complete new roof and easier interchange with the Southern services.

Should make things a lot better. Give it time.
  • But don't you think ending a war and hosting an Olympics are slightly different questions ?
  • jeeez cant people just enjoy it for once all the doom and gloom we face everyday and now for once its positive and people are moaning its a joke, i mean look at the news the headlines are all positive when has that happened recently why cant people stop bloody moaning ffs
  • media brainwashing at its best

Unbelievable comment - haven't you seen how enthusiastic all the crowds have been? Where have you been this last week and the previous few weeks when so many millions have greeted the torch relay so happily.

I think you'll find the hundreds of millions of people watching and attending this collection of sports really do care hence the need to make sure we host this event properly and to show off our great country at the same time. If there is another sport/cultural event that is bigger I would like to know about it.

Stop worrying about other people and just enjoy it.

There will always be some who will be blinkered in the views and go against the norm.

The reality is our country, city whatever you want to call it, are putting on possibly the greatest games there has ever been, our own countrymen and women are excelling, and the vast majority of the country are riding on a feelgood wave.

Don't get bogged down with the inane detail, just enjoy it and let the few that want to wallow or moan or contrast do so.
  • Absolutely spot on, AFKA

I have not been moaning and don't know how to contrast. I have just been airing a different point of view, which in recent times seems to have been the sole purpose of CL. I have done this whilst watching and enjoying the Olympics on the TV, but I still think we are paying a very high price which our country can't afford.

I rest my case and shall get on with cooking dinner and watching the sport, may 18th August arrive soon when we can all get back to the important stuff - CAFC

They have similarities in the they both expensive but they are not connected. There was never an option of "Limpics or invade Iraq". They are not connected so saying bring the troops home is a total red herring.

There is a case for cutting Britian's military commitments overseas and saving money but that is still not a reason to knock London 2012.

This is really surprising because black cab drivers are normally so positive about any change that affects them in any way.

sure you would be positive taking a 50% pay cut so a load of freeloaders can have a jolly up

I'm sure it's tough, but if there was a risk that my income would be affected by 50% for a couple of weeks then I'd do something about it, say take my annual holiday at that time or develop alternative strategies like work out where business might actually increase rather than decrease. Or I could just moan like hell to my existing customers (who are, after all, potential future customers too).

Nearly every cab I've taken in the last few weeks (and I take quite a few I'm afraid to say) I've been met with a stream of negativity which implies the Olympics are here for one purpose only - to piss off cab drivers, whether it's Olympic lanes, moving cab ranks in Greenwich, or one of the many other issues, it's all a conspiricy. I've yet to hear one say how they were intending to tap into the million or so extra visitors to the capital (I realise this number changes from source to source but you get the point).
  • Some unbelievable comments on here, truly astounding. I pity people who are missing out on this wonderful experience.

And the suggestion that anyone enjoying it has somehow been "brainwashed" by the media is laughable. Idiotic in fact.
  • We have enjoyed the Olympics, but we may have a problem...

  • ive had to work 3 days this week for fuck sake
  • Put my hand up and say yes..it was me.

It has been a huge success (so far). Well done to all concerned.

Still say its a lot of money for two weeks of minor sports and fast food marketing and UK only really excels in the so called "posh sports". There are not many elite rowers, sailors and show jumpers in Kenya.

More than half of our medals are won by private school kids and the coverage overseas is censored / restricted to approved media outlets. Can't see them introducing shooting into the curriculum in inner city schools in Manchester any time soon. United kingdom??? ....sorry I don't think so

But yeah..I admit..it has been well delivered.

Find your points convincing, but I reckon more people now want it, than not, and that's all that counts, whatever the correct moral stance is.

When Michael Gove cut the new school buildings programme by 50 percent a few teachers and head teachers shouted, but not many others. Imagine if the government cut the games now half way through. Rightly or wrongly, mass public outrage would ensue.

I've been to the Olympic Park twice and loved it. Maybe the whole thing has been an extravagance and unfair overall, but it has been high quality.

The RM Band were a particular highlight inside BTW.
