  • In floods of tears by the time he crossed the finishing line - really thought he was going to be caught at the last second...

Absolutely LOVE this guy ! SO humble, unaffected by his success and Braveheart personified.

Steve Cram 's words : " British Athletics - we are so so lucky " summed up his achievements at these fantastic Games.

Took the fanily to see "The Wizard of Oz" this afternoon .

Worshipped at the feet of "The Wizard of the Track" tonight.

Sportsview Personality of the Year ?

    No contest.

    Lovely post FF.

I think Mr Wiggins might also have something to say about Sports Personality though. Personally I'm not sure how you would split them.
  • Was in Hyde Park last night and it was amazing when he won, the place erupted. Thousands of people singing the national anthem gave me goosebumps.

Nah, London's very quiet apparently. You must've been mistaken.

It wouldn't bother me if Mo is from Somalia, Britain, America or Mars...when an athlete pulls on that vest/shirt/swimsuit with the British flag on it they get my full support.

You can tell they are proud to have that lion on their chest and it makes us proud when they give it there all.

When the men's 100m relay team go disqualified the other day you could tell they were not only gutted but apologetic. They weren't doin it for themselves, they were doin it for us. Dwain Chambers was a stain on british athletics 3 years ago...but the other day you could tell he had been given another chance and was beaming to be representing his country and all had been forgiven.

I'll admit there were a lot of sports before it all started that I couldn't give a shit about but it took over me and I got the Olympic team gb bug really bad!

All our sportsmen and women have been top notch but little Mo wins it for me.
  • Agree re the 4 guys in our 100 m relay squad, VG ...although I'm going to blank Mr Gemili when I see him next (joke)

Funnily enough, have NEVER seen him even though he lives several doors away so no change there then.
  • Not that it should take away from from what he did but did anyone see him having a row with his missus.

    Pregnant women and hormones!
  • Lol, Plaaayer !

Did see them having "words" and wondered whether it was about the flag he was given to show with " Fly Mo" across it....

Maybe she felt it wasn't allowed as might be construed as advertsising a non Olympic sponsored company ?
  • She was probably just moaning that her feet were hurting and she wanted to go home, so could he hurry up, Purrrlllleeeeeeeeze, as he was being selfish and she'd already had to miss Eastenders.

She stuffed that Fly Mo flag in her bag.
  • Wiggins and Farah - you are right - Farah the hero of the games but Wiggins was the first Brit to win the Tour de France as well as being Olympic Champion. I think Farah comes across as extremely likable and popular which might swing Sports Personality of the Year his way.

Mo Farah breaks Steve Cram's 28-year British 1500m record

Double Olympic champion Mo Farah broke Steve Cram's 28-year 1500m British record at the Diamond League in Monaco.
The Briton remarkably became the sixth fastest man over the distance, clocking three minutes and 28.81 seconds to also become the European record holder.
Farah, the 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic champion, was second behind Kenya's Asbel Kiprop who recorded a world-leading time of 3:27.72.
"I'm pleased, it was weird competing in a new event," said the 30-year-old.
    World all-time at men's 1500m
3:26.00 Hicham El Guerrouj (Mor) 1998
    3:26.34 Bernard Lagat (Ken) 2001
    3:27.37 Noureddine Morceli (Alg) 1995
    3:27.72 Asbel Kiprop (Ken) 2013
    3:28.12 Noah Ngeny (Ken) 2000
    3:28.81 Mo Farah (GBR) 2013
Former world-record holder Cram, whose time of 3:29.67 secs had stood as a British record since 16 July 1985, said he was shocked after witnessing Farah's "unbelievable" run.
The Londoner had decided to test himself in an unfamiliar event to improve his speed ahead of next month's World Championships in Moscow. He would not have expected records to fall his way.
Farah finds himself higher on the world all-time list for the 1500m than he is over the events in which he is reigning Olympic champion.
He is also the first Briton in 16 years to hold the 1500m European record, breaking the 3:28.95 mark set by Spain's Fermin Cacho in 1997.
"Training has been going pretty well. The aim was to work on the speed. It would have been nice to get closer to Kiprop but he is a different class," Farah told BBC Sport.
Farah was just two years old when Cram, then 24, became the first athlete to dip under the 3:30 barrier on a balmy evening in Nice 28 years ago.
"I am shocked in a great way," said Cram, who was commentating on the race for BBC Sport.
"Mo jokingly said he was after the British record and I laughed but hats off to him. For a 5,000m runner to run like that is unbelievable."

  • I'd almost expect the cyclists to be on drugs, but I'd actually be upset if Mo is
  • Leave Mo alone !

He's running roughly the same times Coe and Cram were running 30 years ago.
  • why the comment about drugs

Went to work with Salazar - implicated with drugs. (balco)
Also working with John Smith - implicated with drugs (balco)
The improvement of Farah and Rupp under Salazar has been unusual.
    I hope he's clean but....................................................................................................who knows.

  • Bless his heart !

" Mo - the twins need a nappy change !"

    Zooooom....

Great way to train for a record breaking middle distance race !
  • He speed is so amazing in the home straight - that is what set him apart.
  • Farah is becoming one of the all time track greats, if he is not there already .. next on the agenda? .. the 800 and 400 metres .. the most versatile high performance runner I can ever remember ..

Don't think he will do the 400m, perhaps the 3000m steeplechase.

I wrote that more in 'jest' than expectation (:->)

The marathon is I think the next target for him.

  • I'm afraid the mantra for many socialists has long been do as I say not as I do.

    Hence the phrase champagne socialists.
  • I have mixed feelings about this. Fame is fleeting and Farah has to maximise his income over a short period. Money made now may have to last him and his family for years into the future. Therefore he is justified in keeping as much as he can. However, I do agree that if he has decided to become a tax exile, he should retract his previous pontifications where he criticises fellow tax exiles.
Lastly, he has lived in the USA for a long time and seems to have made a home there. He is not alone in this desire to live abroad. For example, a British speed skater who receives UK Lottery funding, was on the radio this morning saying how much he's looking forward to the Winter Olympics although he has no chance of a medal. He resides in Italy.

Has Farah ever claimed to be a socialist? Even if he has so what? He lives abroad so he taken advantage of that just like many non-doms who support right wing parties. Another needless attempt to politicise a debate

Cue remarks about being picked on or nit-picking because some disagrees with you : - (

  • Not particularly fussed where he lives - he's already done more for our country than I ever will.
  • He is a runner who wins races. Its the sections of the media and his publicists who make him seem like a an Unbelievable Saint with super Powers.

He isn't perfect and no-one i think is shocked by this revelation. He may just have to think twice when asked on subjects of a moral context but he won't lose any sleep.

I'm afraid that the mantra for many right wingers has long been to jump to conclusions without really considering the facts.

    Hence the phrase fuckwits.

It's an incredibly stupid article, I'm surprised at you, Len. Accepting a throwaway comment from a left wing blog as gospel.

He's not applied to be a tax exile - he's applied to move to another country where, one presumes, he'll be paying taxes. You could argue that he's being unpatriotic by basing himself in the US (though I've not heard such claims directed at Andy Murray or David Beckham), but not that there's some ulterior tax motive.
  • What a complete load of bollocks that article is.

Firstly, you cannot apply to become non resident in the UK. Under the new Statutory Residence test rules it is a question of fact as to whether you are resident here or abroad dependant upon such factors as how much time you spend in the UK and what social, economic and other ties you have with the UK. there is a lot more but this isn't the time for a lecture on UK tax law.

Secondly, what with state and federal taxes in the US it's likely that he will be paying more tax there than he would here.

Thirdly as a non -resident sportsman any "winnings" in the UK will be subject to witholding taxes here.

Doesn't seem too much like tax planning/ avoidance/evasion now does it.

What has probably happened is that Mo like a lot of other British citizens has filed his 2013 Tax Return and that it shows hm to have been not UK resident for that year using the test mentioned above although where the rag that carried the article would have got that information is anyones guess as HMRC will certainly not have divulged it.
