  • Only words, politicians talk and talk and talk. Nice to see them not have all their own way.
I dont think we would have even bid for the games if Maggie was in charge.

Oh god, please make this stop........
People have got to spout their lefty nonsense some where and obviously aren't willing to see a psychiatrist about their obsession with an old lady who was prime minister approaching a quarter of a century ago.

Cameron and Johnson deserve everything they get when they try and get some reflected glory from the Games. If their Party had been in charge we wouldn't have even bid and they would have carried on cutting sports funding and selling off school playing fields to their developer pals. If any politician deserves a big thank you it is Tony Blair!

    Sadly blinkered / brainwashed.

Tony Blair was PM when the games were won and both he and Ken Livingstone participated in the bid. Blair was certainly in Singapore when the decision was made. Off the top of my head I can't recall whether KL was there as well.

On the other hand when we pitched for the 2018 World Cup Call-Me-Dave turned up in person and lobbied for the bid. Several nations promised him in person that they would vote for England and then promptly supported the Russian WC campaign.

While TB might not be everyone's cup of tea he was a good politician and for all his faults he kept the Tory part out of office for over a decade something that was always guaranteed to get the blood pressure levels of the Daily Mail rising to unhealthy levels.

  • It is the BBC though, and the beeb do hate the Tories.

Too right, this guy in particular hates the Tory government:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Robinson

I believe his nickname is "Toenails" - on the basis that he's so far up the backsides of the Tory party that the only part of his body left showing are his toenails, and even that's a matter of opinion.

  • Why blame Thatcher when she is the one we desperately need to come back as PM so she can sort this mess out and not think about her career like many of the politicians did.

    Oh and strange ....
  • sm, Tony = 0ver 200 playing fields closed.

Strangely you fail to mention the 10,000 that went when the Tories were in power between 1979 and 1997 http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http:/www.culture.gov.uk/about_us/freedom_of_information/foi_requests/5523.aspx

Others failed to read my post properly - I said if ANY politician deserves thanks it is TB - personally I think the right think is for politicians to stay out of this and allow the athletes and organisers to take the credit rather than exposing their gross hypocrisy as in the case of Cameron and Johnson.

Thatcherism didn't work in the 1980s - 3.5m people didn't work either. For that matter Thatcherism isn't working in 2012 either. When people think she was a good PM they neglect to remember that her lunatic economic experiments were based on privatising a whole raft of nationalised industries to pay for tax cuts and on using North Sea oil revenues - a once in several lifetimes boon to prop up what was left. We wasted all that money giving people tax cuts in the hope/expectation that it would lead to economic growth. It did but it encouraged short-termism and greed. Once we had a car manufacturing industry - rather than modernise it that got cut, also slashed and burned was the steel industry and coal/iron mining. All mistakes.

But we had revenues from privatisation and the North Sea to pay for people to go on the dole and keep quiet. Unfortunately the polarisation we've suffered since in British society has created a rich, educated elite and a prole culture where people are virtually living their entire lives on benefits, but typically we blame the unemployed for being jobless but don't look at the situation that puts and keeps them their. The last thing we need is another dose of Thatcherism, unfortunately Cameron, Clegg, Osborne et al were and are children of the 80s who swallowed the propaganda and are intent on trying to make this doctrine work again.

Most other nations sunk their windfalls and profits into Sovereign wealth funds - to invest back into society. Thanks to her we blew ours. Too late now, but we can learn the lesson of thinking and planning for the long-term.

We could always use our gold reserves to back up the economy. especially as prices are so high now.
