How about a trip to the new forest, Lymington or Lyndhurst. Great countryside, near the coast and some lovely pubs and restaurants about. Try Elmers court country club in Lymington for some good rooms in that area.

    Beat me to it!

We stayed in Lyndhurst earlier in the year for a couple of nights and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Heartily recommend the New Forest as well. Nice bike rides and walks, lovely pubs and stunning scenery.

The Grand Burstin....what an fing dump mate.....can't believe you're recommending that place....2 star, 3 at best and that's pushing it!

I wasn't necessarily 'recommending' any hotel. I said I had stayed there (about 12 years ago). At £55 per head for a couple of nights dinner bed and breakfast they did the job. Not sure that we bothered with the dinners tho! Prices now into the 60s but a lot of other places on that website.

Again, New Forest/Brockenhurst I'd say. Marwell is nearby and for your reference includes red pandas.

Otherwise I'd say Dorset (Monkey World) or maybe Bath, which is nice enough and has Bristol Zoo not far away (also has red pandas).
  • And I'd third the New Forest - just come back from a great weekend down there! If your partner likes animals, you've got all the wildlife in the Forest to look at, and as the chap above says, Marwell Zoo on your doorstep. Plus the place is so beautiful, you can't help but have a nice romantic weekend!

And just to ensure you do have a nice romantic weekend, and are prepared to push the boat out a bit, try the Captains Club in Christchurch.

Glass half empty - I can't wait to join you moving down there! Just need to get the kids settled and we're off too! Only 100 miles from London but a different world down there. And one I can't wait to join.

Amazing how close it is but a completely different world , my only trouble is that there is bugger all work down here so spend most of the working week back up there .

Had a smashing weekend in Rye not too long ago. For a beach nip along to Camber Sands, think it's the only coastal beach where I've never seen the sea. Helluva walk for a quick dip!

I wonder why you chose to stay there?

The New Forest rocks btw! Unless you have to work :-(

There are safari 'experience' canvas teepees in Port Lympne Animal Park. Not the cheapest of stays, but if you want to impress, it would have worked for me! There is also Whipsnade Zoo near Bletchley Park and that would also make a good weekend as you can do enigma and elephants in one weekend. There are prairie dogs living wild near the wildebeest and for some reason that, along with wandering amongst the wallabies, rather endeared the place to me. The New Forest is stunning, but I'd probably leave that one until the autumn hues are setting in and the crowds have lessened.

Isle of Wight: nice beaches, lots of nice areas for walking, can take a day trip over to Lymington, pop up the Spinnaker at Portsmouth before or after the ferry - and it has a zoo! I once saw a tiger catch and eat a bird in the IOW Zoo, the only time I've ever seen a captive big cat do anything other than stretch and yawn :-)
  • Stayed at Sandy Balls a few years back with some pals... lovely, lovely part of the world.
  • Am looking for New Forest and North Kent cottages later today and after I get back tonight. Am really grateful.

Lack of work is why I never moved down before. And take care on the commuting back to London front - I knew someone who moved to Lymington and commuted back to London every day who ended up in hospital with nervous exhaustion. Mucked his marriage up as well in the end.

Fancy setting up a Dorset Addicks branch shortly!!!!!
  • Can see that happening . Im ready for Dorset addicks ;0)

Great Yarmouth, fantastic zoo at Banham and one at Kessingland. Lovely beach at Great Yarmouth as well
  • Also Whitstable way, it's the Faversham Hop Festival on 1st and 2nd Sept, lots of bands, beer etc.

As well as Whitstable beach and the above mentioned zoos.

Buckingham is a nice little country town, Stowe is nearby (the first Capability Brown landscape) although I'd give it two days not three.
