Radio2

edited September 2012 in Not Sports Related
Being of a certain age,I remember Radio2 as it used to be,now it has gone all pop music (mostly any way) it would be good to have a station that plays music of an earlier age. Radio 1 type music has three stations Radio 1 Radio 1Extra, and 6 Music.
Surely the BBC could have Radio 2 Extra with music for the over 40s,especially now that DAB has so many frequencies.

  • Not a bad idea, Radio 2 Gold so to speak. There is a Gold station though isn't there but as I remember it's the same old hits repeated, the beeb could do it better. 50s, 60s, 70s, I'd listen occasionally (unless Queen were on rotate). I do like Brian Matthews show on a Saturday morning.

I disagree about 6 though, it's more aligned to 2 rather than 1. So much so then when they were going to axe 6 some of the shows were heading to 2.

I think Chris Evans plays Robbie Williams (sh*t) new song every morning!

Radio 2 are only keeping up with their demographic. When I was a lad, it was aimed at my parents generation. It is now aimed at somewhere in-between my generation and my sons. Fifteen years ago it was aimed at me!

I remember when Radio 1 had a big clear out and got rid of my favorite DJs, who then turned up on Radio 2 - I didn't like it at the time, but I was 30 and R1 was never supposed to be for 30 year-olds.
  • Tune into to any of the "Gold" stations, I do not know where you live Derek but I listen to Kent Gold and they play tracks form the 60's, 70's & 80's all day long.
  • thanks eaststandmike,I live in Sittingbourne,I have listened to gold some times,I will have to try it again.
  • This is a popular misconception. I am afraid Radio 2 has not changed its age profile - you have changed yours.

BBC radio has to be very strict about who it is aimed at and has a very hard time if it wants to change its profile (unlike commercial radio which can use its licence renewal to do this).

    Roughly speaking
    Radio 1 15 - 30
    Radio 2 30 - 45
    Radio 3 specialist music plus 45 - 60
    Radio 4 specilist talk plus 45 - 60
Local radio specialist local plus 60+

Obviously some over 30s still like the current music and some 40s over do not like music that 30s like. I would guess you are over 40 and remember radio 2 fondly for the years that it was aimed at you. I am 35 and have got into radio 2 in the last couple of years and really enjoy it.

They have a diffliculy time moving their listeners onto other stations whch is why they often move presenters over. You can't really complain that there is a lack of options for 40 plus either at the BBC or or other commercial digital stations.
  • Well I still like tellytubbies so there!
  • yes,I am over 40 but what,s wrong with the BBC,as a public company not catering for my age group. What station plays,Mantovani,Frank Sinatra,Dean Martin,Peggy Lee,Frankie Laine,Guy Mitchell,Joan Reagan,non that I know.
There was a station called,Our Kind of Music, come from Essex Area, but that went of the air, sadly.
  • As Our Kind of Music went off the air, I guess there is not enough demand Derek? I would like them to play wall to wall rockabilly, but have to be grateful for an hour a week, six weeks of the year. Which is six hours more than we had from about 1984 to 2004...
  • I dont listen to much else except Radio 2 thesedays. Unless I have access to digital radio 6 music when my brother is on!

Chris Evans on my way into work, then my own music on the tube. Then at the weekends when doing housework or pottering around the house and then when out in the car, we listen to a variety of different shows depending on the time, Ken Bruce, Sounds of the 60s, Graham Norton, Wogan, Elaine Paige, Sounds of the 70s. Love it all. Elaine Paige yesterday was great and led me to spend 45 minutes on youtube playing clips of songs from A Chorus Line and Hello Dolly.

As a 60+ musically speaking I am dead, ( which will not come as a surprise to some posters)

This perscriptive, marketing 'crap ' has it's logic in the bbc playlist, and was designed to replace the pirate stations.

Radio 1: There is no BBC public service remit to provide a national pop station, as other people/organisations, in the same way that it supported websites, and magazines, which it has now sold or closed down, mainly due to pressure from the private media companies. There may well be a case for the other national stations, and it will be interesting to see how the bbc with it's new DG starting today maintains a public service remit, and provide popular cultural output.

We all love to have a dig at the bbc, ( me as well as an ex-employee of some 14 years) and it is not perfect, but compared to other media organisations I will accept the good with the bad/poor. On a long journey I tune in to BBC radio 2, and 4.
For short journeys 'talk sport', and 6 music.
Radio 1: may well relate to a wide range of people, but if the bbc think 18 plus listen to them in great amounts I would be surprissed, and chasing the 'yoof' market in this sector they are wide of the mark, my son's who are 24 have not listened for years they are far too cool for that stuff....... the same attitude I had 40 years ago except for John Peel, and a few other individuals......but as someone once remarked 'you have weird tastes in music'
  • all the 'music stations' have too much chat and the announcers are too fond of their own voices .. sack the lot of em
  • Local radio can be ok for older (50s and prior) music but with "the cuts" I'm not sure for how much longer!

Derek, living as a Man of Kent, have you tried Dave Cash or Richard Spendlove on Saturday and Sunday (in Cash's case) nights on Radio Kent?
  • If people aren't listening to the radio for new music or some certain guest DJ or a special show and it's just for listening to old stuff you already know. Why not just listen to an mp3 player if all you are doing is waiting for your favourite songs, that more than likely you already own, in amongst the DJ talking for 30 mins of every hour and 25 mins of adverts on local radio?
  • Radio2 has a few decent programmes, big band and swing , country, folk, Brian Johnson of ac/dc has a guest slot for a few weeks .. but the specialist programmes are too short .. less chat more music
  • Sounds Of The 60s with Brian Matthew on a Saturday morning ain't bad, and I don't mind a bit if old Ken Bruce, but the rest is a bit shit imo. Gone right off Chris Evans for some reason.........
  • ..... wish I could get Capital Gold out here, don't mind that!
  • podcasts........its the future
  • Radio 1, Radio 1(xtra) & 6 Music are all very different. 1(xtra) is a predominately urban station & 6 Music is alternative station.

  • colthe3rd,I apologize you are right 6 music is not Radio 1 music,I should know better as I do listen to it, especially in the car.I also listen to Jazzfm quite a lot.
Thank you every one for your response, its good to hear other people,s opinion,s.
  • Im 44 and did listen to Radio 2 a lot but the last couple of years I feel its turned in to gangs of old blokes talking far too much! Doing shifts I liked Alex Lester at night,That Feltz woman makes me want to puke.I could listen all day until the folk rubbish etc started a 7pm and switch to 5 Live Sport but I must say I have drifted away almost entirely, the rot starting with Jeremy Vine,Steve Wright and his stiffs rambling on.Now only listening when I cant pick up anything else!
  • Ken Bruce leaving Radio 2 to join Greatest Hits Radio so that's Bruce, Wright and Mayo gone in the matter of a couple of years from their daytime format.
  • edited January 2023
I like Sara Cox, but she's still not as good as Simon Mayo.

Didn't like Steve Wright much but don't like Scott Mills much either (very self-important and smug).

Ken Bruce will be a big loss, he's the best one on it.
  • Greatest Hits Radio or Nation Radio will pick up a lot of Radio 2’s audience now
  • Gutted to hear that announcement this morning from Ken, even more so that 'Popmaster' is going with him. Can't stand commercial radio and the annoying adverts.
However Radio 2 need to get a good replacement in....perhaps Gary Davies, but I'd prefer Richard Allinson, or how about Dermot Oleary, his Sat morning show is very good.
On the station overall I'm OK with Zoe Ball, I like Sarah Cox show alot, and Jeremy Vines show is informative, but Scott Mills ain't great. It'll be interesting to see who gets it that's for sure.
  • Ken might aswell turn the lights off on his way out. They seem to be trying to turn radio 2 into radio 1. Sara Cox is a very good presenter, but apart from that,I'll be tuning in the work radio to greatest hits from March.

  • Please gawd not Gary Davies (current favourite) or Richard Allinson. I hate radio adverts but I suspect I'll be carrying on Popmastering with Ken. I wonder if Rob Brydon is available!

I do quite like Sarah Cox, and would have preferred her to get the morning gig instead of Zoe Ball tbh.
  • A very good alternative to Radio 2 is Boom Radio, a good mixture of music & very few adverts.
David Hamilton, Graham Dene & Nicky Horne amongst the various djs/presenters.
