Being of a certain age,I remember Radio2 as it used to be,now it has gone all pop music (mostly any way) it would be good to have a station that plays music of an earlier age. Radio 1 type music has three stations Radio 1 Radio 1Extra, and 6 Music.
Surely the BBC could have Radio 2 Extra with music for the over 40s,especially now that DAB has so many frequencies.

I disagree about 6 though, it's more aligned to 2 rather than 1. So much so then when they were going to axe 6 some of the shows were heading to 2.
I remember when Radio 1 had a big clear out and got rid of my favorite DJs, who then turned up on Radio 2 - I didn't like it at the time, but I was 30 and R1 was never supposed to be for 30 year-olds.
BBC radio has to be very strict about who it is aimed at and has a very hard time if it wants to change its profile (unlike commercial radio which can use its licence renewal to do this).
Roughly speaking
Radio 1 15 - 30
Radio 2 30 - 45
Radio 3 specialist music plus 45 - 60
Radio 4 specilist talk plus 45 - 60
Local radio specialist local plus 60+
Obviously some over 30s still like the current music and some 40s over do not like music that 30s like. I would guess you are over 40 and remember radio 2 fondly for the years that it was aimed at you. I am 35 and have got into radio 2 in the last couple of years and really enjoy it.
They have a diffliculy time moving their listeners onto other stations whch is why they often move presenters over. You can't really complain that there is a lack of options for 40 plus either at the BBC or or other commercial digital stations.
There was a station called,Our Kind of Music, come from Essex Area, but that went of the air, sadly.
Chris Evans on my way into work, then my own music on the tube. Then at the weekends when doing housework or pottering around the house and then when out in the car, we listen to a variety of different shows depending on the time, Ken Bruce, Sounds of the 60s, Graham Norton, Wogan, Elaine Paige, Sounds of the 70s. Love it all. Elaine Paige yesterday was great and led me to spend 45 minutes on youtube playing clips of songs from A Chorus Line and Hello Dolly.
This perscriptive, marketing 'crap ' has it's logic in the bbc playlist, and was designed to replace the pirate stations.
Radio 1: There is no BBC public service remit to provide a national pop station, as other people/organisations, in the same way that it supported websites, and magazines, which it has now sold or closed down, mainly due to pressure from the private media companies. There may well be a case for the other national stations, and it will be interesting to see how the bbc with it's new DG starting today maintains a public service remit, and provide popular cultural output.
We all love to have a dig at the bbc, ( me as well as an ex-employee of some 14 years) and it is not perfect, but compared to other media organisations I will accept the good with the bad/poor. On a long journey I tune in to BBC radio 2, and 4.
For short journeys 'talk sport', and 6 music.
Radio 1: may well relate to a wide range of people, but if the bbc think 18 plus listen to them in great amounts I would be surprissed, and chasing the 'yoof' market in this sector they are wide of the mark, my son's who are 24 have not listened for years they are far too cool for that stuff....... the same attitude I had 40 years ago except for John Peel, and a few other individuals......but as someone once remarked 'you have weird tastes in music'
Derek, living as a Man of Kent, have you tried Dave Cash or Richard Spendlove on Saturday and Sunday (in Cash's case) nights on Radio Kent?
Thank you every one for your response, its good to hear other people,s opinion,s.
I bet Ken Bruce wont be replaced by anyone over 40. Will have to start listening to Greatest hits radio.
You can stick your inclusivity up your ****
Didn't like Steve Wright much but don't like Scott Mills much either (very self-important and smug).
Ken Bruce will be a big loss, he's the best one on it.
However Radio 2 need to get a good replacement in....perhaps Gary Davies, but I'd prefer Richard Allinson, or how about Dermot Oleary, his Sat morning show is very good.
On the station overall I'm OK with Zoe Ball, I like Sarah Cox show alot, and Jeremy Vines show is informative, but Scott Mills ain't great. It'll be interesting to see who gets it that's for sure.
I do quite like Sarah Cox, and would have preferred her to get the morning gig instead of Zoe Ball tbh.
David Hamilton, Graham Dene & Nicky Horne amongst the various djs/presenters.
