Anyone remember Prestel? It was run by the Post Office (I think without checking Wiki). They used to have it in Woolwich Library. Think of it as a kind of Teletext meets the internet but a million times slower.
if the tv reception was crap (like the tv in my old bedroom) then all the letters would scramble up. pissed me off big time.
yea, forgot about that VG, the score would read something like this... d4rby C b-1 chprlt8n AtH Ft.
oh for f**k sake did we win or not? ha!
it also used to hop. so you'd enter page 302 and it would work its way round but then go from 298 to 304, so you had to wait for it to go round again lol
2 weeks minimum 3 star anywhere in the canaries minumum BB
got to airport and given plane tickets for a flight to tenerife got off plane
transfered to a 5* hotel half board with sea and pool views massive room
total cost for me and wife in peak school holiday time of August
£250 each person (this was 18 years ago but still cracking value)
Done another one about 5 years later and got a 2 week holiday in tunisia in a 4* hotel all inclusive for £300 for the both of us
all we did was book two weeks off wait until 2 days before we were due to be on hols and booked the best deal on the teletext
with no kids there was no real risk and the savings were huge when we got back we priced up the holiday based on what we got and where we stayed and tenerife was approx 800 pp
so i guess bbc 2 wont have ceefax on in the wee small hours when the channel shuts down.
Blimey - ceefax playing in the early hours screwed me big time once. Got up to watch the japanese gp recorded in 1996. Kept away from the result, turned on the tv to be faced with the news headline "hill wins glorious world crown". Almost punched the tv.

When I was not at a game, I'd hold a cushion over the screen so I could only see the oppositions score ! Thus heightened tension before I revealed ours. Was the only one who did this ?

Seriously, thank you so much for this. I used to do this as a kid all the time.
Wow. Amazing how nostalgic those pictures make me feel. I 'watched' extra time of the Leeds play off final at St Andrews on Ceefax. Now that's real drama.
Used to love that - except when you got a question wrong and had to go back to the beginning. Bamber Boozler looks just like my father in law, or perhaps Walter Matthau.
There used to be a football and / or sports quiz on Channel 4 text as well as Bamboozle. Parents used to get so wound up with us constantly putting it on top of the tv programme below or on "mix"
Running in to currys to check the scores. 324 and up or tables. 323 top scorers? 606 tv now and next. 120 itv-itv football coverage was usually pretty poor. Also linked in with this was the fun of getting the static shock of the tv-so much fun-I miss static electric shocks, they used to occur at least once a week, sad times. I did love it when we got a new tv that stored all the teletext pages so you could scroll through at will. RIP
I nearly got chucked out of Currys at Merry Hill once celebrating a late equaliser away at Leicester as it came through on Ceefax.
It also used to be fun trying to guess who the transfer speculation was about in the endless adverts for Clubcall and Teamtalk that used to run on teletext.
When we first got a teletext TV it felt like touching the future. Makes me feel old that I can remember something that now seems primative once being cutting edge.
Haha great thread. Do you remember the cinema listings? There would be about 50 pages and you'd always join the page after your cinema and have to wait about 15mins for it to to scroll through. Argh!!!!!
Yeah and when it did finally come back round scrambling around to try and press the hold button but fecking it up and pressing the one that takes you back to page 100.

I remember drunk Saturday nights coming home to do the bamboozle quiz. They also had a soap opera for a few years.
That just made me laugh out loud.
Legendary thread.
