Charge to use Blackwall Tunnel

  • I've heard it all now. It's discriminatory to implement a congestion charge in one direction (the congested one) because people who travel in that direction are going to be charged, whilst people who travel in the opposite (uncongested) one aren't.

    Do you hear yourself? 🤣
Of course its discrimination. What do you call it if one set of people are treated differently to another just because of where they live.

If all you are trying to do is reduce the congestion then perhaps it might be better to get rid of the road completely & make people walk  !!
You don't call peak fares on public transport 'discrimination' based on the fact that people who work afternoons or nights don't have to pay them. Measures are being put in place to try and cut the use of cars to ease congestion and pollution, ffs - London has arguably the most extensive public transport system in the world and people STILL won't guve up their sodding cars. What do you propose is done about the absolute gridlock caused on the roads when we the Blackwall Tunnel is shut? How do you propose new crossings are funded? Charging people to drive AWAY from congestion would be a monumentally stupid idea as it would be counterproductive.

    You've not thought this through...
It's nothing to do with "thinking it through" but to do with penalizing 1 sector of the public just because of where they live.

In your first paragraph you talk about peak fares & people working shifts. That is also true for the new Blackwall Tunnel charge where people working late shifts will be charged differently to those working "days". But that's not my point. My point is that people working the same shifts are being charged differently just because of where they live.

Would you think it's fair if only people commutimg into London from Dartford on SouthEastern trains were charged peak fares & those travelling into London from Essex on C2C were charged off peak, even though they were travelling in at the same time.

Perhaps it is me after all 🤷‍♂️.
It’s only peak time in one direction though.
    That is my point.

Peak time happens twice a day. Going north in the morning & south in the evenings.

    Makes no sense.
Yea when the majority of cars are on the road travelling ? It's really not difficult to understand.
I think it is for you.

Its got nothing to do with the amount of traffic.

There will now be a charge for using the Blackwall Tunnel. The charge is increased at peak times.......FOR TRAVEL IN ONE DIRECTION ONLY.

I give up. I suspect I'm being trolled so this will be my last say on the matter.
Jesus wept, yes because at peak times the traffic is mainly moving in one direction ? it changes direction later in the day. What is so hard to understand.

I read that the S4 super loop bus is due to start running on April 7th.
A boost for those of us living in Lee.

Which is exactly why charges are brought in. To deter people from using the tunnel who do so for convenience, at the significant inconvenience of the people who live near it.

    Sorry....???

What do you mean....." deter people from using the tunnel who do so for convenience" ?   What a stupid statement. The tunnel is there to use. Its not a convenience its a necessity. I used it today to get from Bromley to Wansted. How use I am supposed to get there.....swim ???.

As for it being an inconvenience of those living near it.......either move or put up with it. I expect it was there before you moved into the area.

No. TFL are quoted on that report as saying they are disappointed with the take up.

We also haven’t built it to reduce usage. We’ve built it ease congestion for 2 defined routes. You’ll still enter it from broadly  the same area on our side of the river won’t you?

  • Still think the peak time charge is discriminatory. Only affects those people living south of the Thames. And hasn't been picked up by the media who just mention that there are extra costs at peak times. They even mention the peak time charge is both Southbound & Northbound but never go on to say that it's only Northbound in the mornings and only Southbound in the afternoon/ evening.

Are you aware of how cities work? What do you propose, nobody lives in the corridor where the tunnel exists? It just routes through wasteland and drops you right at your office door? London has the best public transport system possibly on Earth, given the complexity of operating it - and until recently, had a shocking record of pollution related deaths and illnesses amongst the poorer population who are forced to live next to its polluted roads. Single occupancy cars are a convenience that a city with a joined up public transport system like London shouldn't have to support any longer - the roads should be free for people who actually need to use them - tradesmen, delivery drivers, the emergency services - and buses to carry 80 people using the same space as two cars.

Just so that I'm sure I haven't misunderstood..Are you saying it will be cheaper to go north at say 4pm than going south? , and the reverse in the mornings?
  • As for peak time trains in and out of london

Just looked it up and Yes you are correct both in how the charging system operates and also that hardly anyone realises that is how it's going to operate.

Well I've been banging on about it for months on here. I've spoken to my MP and he said not his problem as its TFL so speak to your London Assembly member. So I did. He said they have been trying to get discounts for people living in Bexley & Bromley but to no avail.

so you agree as the above applies to me. I went to see a client today in Wanstead. A GP no less. It wasn't a day out or a jolly....I was working. And I wasn't "going into London" so should pay a premium on my "ticket price" like commuters going to work in the City. I left home at 10.45am and drove on a public highway like millions of others did today.

Perhaps we shouldn't have cars......or even roads 🙄.

With your work commute yesterday, you've solved your constant moaning about the peak fare. Just cross northbound after 10am then you'll pay the normal fare.

I don't know how to tell you this, but absolutely you should have taken public transport. Unless you were in the trades and carting a load of gear round, or were delivering something that couldn't easily be carried. What is it you do for a living?

Indeed. But I cant always travel after 10 am & be back before 4pm. And also thats not the point. It's not about me but the general situation for anyone wanting to travel North through the tunnels before 10 am or Southbound after 4pm.

I once got off a driving ban because the magistrate realised I needed my car for work & not all my clients live close to bus stops & train/tube stations.

That's the problem with politicians and people like you......you dont live in the real world.
What had you done to potentially get the driving ban in the first place? And if travelling by car is so important for your work, why did you do it?

    Is this for real? 🤣🤣🤣

Fuck me, you got off a driving ban? What for? No, don't tell me - you were unlucky enough to be caught going 41 in a 40 on four separate occasions, your speedo was faulty but the officer wouldn't hear it, they're all little Hitlers just collecting money for the police Christmas party and you were only on the way to see a sick relative all four times anyway and why should you be punished for going over the limit it was only a little bit and it's not fair motorists are unfairly targeted why do we even pay road tax wah wah wah....

With every post you make I'm even more convinced you're a windup.

Why should he have taken public transport?

He owns a car, and there are roads that go places he wants to go.

Why on earth would you take public transport in that situation, unless it was more convenient to do so?
