Retired recently. Loving it. It’s taken me a while to get into it but I’m starting to relax more and do what I want to do without rushing. I’m still running the hen sanctuary but I’ve let the numbers drop over the last 18 months from 120 residents and 80 odd rescue hens waiting for homes to just 55 residents by not taking more when one dies. I still take emergencies or find hens a good home. But this is my ‘hobby’ and will continue as long as I’m fit enough. It’s Just coming to terms with the fact that I’m not going to do paid work again that helped me retire. May it be my longest career!!19

I was checking out at the self-service tills in Marks & Spencer. I pressed the wrong button and was about to go back to the previous screen. No drama. An assistant comes up to me, "You alright there?" she says. "Yes, fine, thanks". "Do you want to pay by card?" she says. "Yes, it's OK", I reply. "You press this button up here for card payment..." 'Yes, I f****** know' I want to reply, but don't.2

Sorting out photo from when you bought the house 50 years ago in October and trying to sort out the baby photo’s to give to the kids. Blimey where’s that time gone!2

I asked my ten year old granddaughter if she was looking forward to her pop concert (Harry Styles). She found this most amusing - not only that she told all her classmates and they all laughed too ... apparently.1

Words like Beatnik, Layabout, Teddy Boys, Ton Up boys, Hit Parade, Brylcream, Nit Lady,Noddy Bikes,Panda Cars when said now bring a look of "Huh, what's a Beatnik?" Having to be over 65 to remember them being in everyday use6

A few years ago my mum bought a retirement flat. All over the building were emergency pullcords and push buttons.
I was in the lift and accidently hit the red button. Straight away a woman was asking me, (via the lift speaker), if I needed assistance. She must of thought I was an inmate because despite my assurances that everything was fine she kept asking me if I needed medical assistance. The more I spoke the older I sounded.5 -

Not so much old as grown up, but sending a snotty e-mail to the Headmaster of my son's school and seeing the problem get sorted out almost immediately after being ignored for 2 weeks by the teacher involved.
Then I go into the school and realise I'm older than pretty much every teacher. Now THAT makes me feel old.1 -
I saw on social media this morning that it's 50 years today since the release of the film Bugsy Malone. A film in which children act out a story based on the then-ancient history of Al Capone's activities in the mid-1920s, 50 years before the film came out.2

Decided to review my finances today. As a result had a cheque to pay into Barclays. There are just three branches locally, one in Dartford, one in Chatham and a part time mobile bank in Gravesend. How the world has changed, and not for the better. Its a real pain having to drive miles just to deposit a cheque (the Building Society couldn't do a direct transfer) and it was real hassle. Ten years ago I had five banks locally now just the one small B/Soc. When you think how many staff (especially school leavers and part timers) were employed in banking and retail it must be a real issue finding a job at the starting point now.4

Think the limit for cheques is about £500 when paying in via the app. There must a post office that you can pay into, usually take a day or two longer to get into your account.valleynick66 said:

Went to the hospital in early April for what I thought was a routine follow up after having a pacemaker fitted four weeks previously. I was sat down to be told that I would be dead within two years if I didn’t have surgery on my heart valves! I decided on the surgery.0

I tried to pay a cheque into Barclays when they had a branch in Swanley ( I think it’s gone). There was a big queue and a staff member offered to show me how to pay it in by smart phone. I really didn’t want to but they were desperate to show me. As I expected I couldn’t get the thing to work. Taking photos of the back and front etc I just couldn’t get the cheque to fit the size they wanted. The staff member looked exasperated and did it for me in the end.valleynick66 said:

I recently received a cheque for £7.36 from HMRC why on earth they are sending cheques out and not just reducing my PAYE by that amount is beyond me. Its almost like they think people wont bother cashing them !!!!Arsenetatters said:

Totally agree Andy, my favourite was receiving an HMRC demand for 1p, I must admit to purely accidentally underpaying by the offending 1p. I sent them a cheque. Oh the postage on the demand was around 50p but they did send a postage free envelope from memory.AndyG said:

Since volunteering at school at I’ve seen two consecutive sets of children come in one door at reception age (4) and leave after year six (11) and other than the head teacher and the staff member that introduced our dogs to the school I’m the longest serving member of staff.
Also an eleven year old that trained with our Valli announced her engagement recently at the now age of 21.2 -

I suspect that many use digital reminders ... this is my chosen method (which I'm beginning to use far too often)
