  • I hope Donnny are chasing him, he'll get them into the prem. But how will they keep him down on the 'farm' now that he's seen Paree .. well S'Hampton in the prem anyway
  • That's my Pardew bet buggered now too, idiots!!!
  • this must be one of the most supid sackings of all time
  • Here's one for your stat box...

47 of the 92 league clubs have changed their manager since May 2012.

    .
  • Confirmed as Reading manager.

First home game in charge is v

    Southampton
  • Was very surprised when he was sacked by the Saints, however i'm even more surprised at this appointment. Is he really a better man to keep them up than McDermott seeing as he can't buy/loan anyone and has to work with McDermott's players.

No but he might get them back up/stop them going into freefall next season.
  • And who's to say McDermott couldn't have got them back up? He won the Championship ahead of Adkins the season before.
  • Reckon he'll do a good job for Reading I like his style not mouthy just gets on with it. If we didn't have CP I would not be unhappy to have Adkins at The Valley
  • better manager than McDermott and has a reasonable chance of keeping them up. If not I'd bet on them being Champions next season. I wish him luck, like him a lot.
  • Very good appointment. Will have his work cut out this season but is the man to rebuild and take them forward again.
  • A decent appointment, but not obviously a better manager than McDermott, who had less money to spend this season than Adkins.

  • A manager with a good record despite being fired by the Ungodly Saints. I wonder though if he will be as successful as McDermot, unless of course things were going on behind the scenes at Reading that led to McDermot's sacking. This appointment all in all has the look of changing deckchairs on the Titanic

  • On paper this looks a good call by Reading
  • Reading to get promotion back to the Premier League next season?
  • Strikes me as a like for like replacement really, not sure if too much value has been added.

I know you have always liked Adkins but why do you say he is a better manager than McDermot - This is not a disagreement by the way, just interested. I see them as very similar and like them both. I'm glad that Adkins has got the job rather than some unknown continental manager, but not sure what he adds, unless McDermot had lost the players.

Why dont you just marry him ;) (Joke)
  • Adkins has a longer track record and has done it with a skint scunthorpe as well as at Soton. He has built and re-built teams and used young talent well.

Reading had a lot of money to spend last season and McDermott used it well. Soton also had money to rebuild there already strong league 1 squad.

Both teams have been near the bottom all season but after a poor start Soton were pulling away when Adkins was sacked. Reading were in the bottom three when he went although I still think it was harsh.
  • Soton allegedly spent £7m on Rodrigues and £12m Ramirez, so Adkins has had a lot more money to spend this season than McDermott. Givem £20m to spend, I wonder where Reading would be in the table?
  • On a side note, how refreshing is it to see an English manager get reinstated into the league?

But were the signings Adkins choice?

  • Would love to see him keep Reading up and Southampton go down.
