  • Anybody remember Shades records the heavy metal specialist shop in St Annes Court,Wardour St?

Remember them very well - used to buy mail order when I was a kid and then broke all the rules on a sixth form study weekend in London to go. Was in heaven. Bet its not there now though.

Long gone donnyaddick, closed in 1992 and replaced with Chocci's Chunes a dance music shop :(
  • Back in the day (the 1970s) I used to frequent an excellent little record shop in Bexley Village. I can't for the life of me remember the name of said shop though. Can anybody remind me?

That was Elpees - they had one in Northumberland Heath for a while as well. The one in Bexley had a great Punk singles selection.

  • Our Price - Erith.................but what was the independent named record shop that was by the old market?
  • ......what was the name of the record shop in Sidcup High Street; next to boots, opposite Woolworths? Remember buying Thompson Twins album on cassette in there in the '80's.

Like donnyaddick I used to order stuff mail order from there in my youth and visited a couple of times. Remember a guy called Kelv Hellrazer worked there, wrote for Metal Forces magazine. Wished he was from LA but probably came from Romford.

    Met Tommy Vance in there!

Last album I bought from Shades was an import copy of Presto by Rush.

  • I am going to dig out Keeper of the Seven Keys by Helloween as that was the album I bought when I went there (I'm not proud!)
  • Morps Music in Lewisham was my heaven. Sadly long gone.

Are Sister Ray and Selectadisc in Berwick St still around.

Clem - Sister Ray is definitely still there, will have a look tomorrow for Selectadisc.

Yes TW Records which ray owned,he also had a shop in Plumstead High Street.

A Charlton fan and used to supply the records during games.
There was one in erith as well.. got my down in the valley CD from there!

Shades was owned by a guy called Mike and yes Kelvin did work there,he also wrote for Metal Forces, lived in london and after leaving shades worked at the same place as me, he was a big Fan of POISON. Great bloke and knew tons of bands, had some good times with kelv. Had long peroxide hair what a dude.

  • Ahhh memories...25 years ago as a young whipper snapper, all my pocket money was spent Saturday mornings at TW Records in Plumstead and then onto The Valley in the afternoons...every other week

My mum worked in the one at Northumberland Heath, it was a great escape from Erith School many hours spent listening to unknown bands in the used section.

Sister Ray moved into the Selectadisc premises a few years ago. I think the Record & Tape Exchange is the only other music related shop hanging on in Berwick Street now.

I had many a happy day rummaging through the racks of the record shops on that street, & there used to be a fair few more that were around on Wardour St & around the Chinatown area. I used to love grabbing some of the promo albums that had been sold to the shops by journos. Always before official release & always dirt cheap! All of that is sadly gone now though!
  • Remember a place during the 70s in Berwick Street, where you went downstairs into the basement and it smelt of burning joss sticks

Was just before Sister Ray but on the other side of the road.
  • Fopp - Earlham Street, just off the Seven Dials. Stacks of £3/£5 CDs in all genres, as well as hundreds of DVDs. However, although it used to be an independent shop, it might be an offshoot of HMV.
  • Selectadisc went a few years ago, there were a few branches that were always packed, don't understand why they went tits up

There are plenty in SOHO, Reckless, Blackmarket, Sister Ray, Phonica and there is a Fopp.

Fopp is owned by HMV, god knows what will happen to them, probably worth saving more than HMV

  • Thanks, Badger
  • Used to have a client in Tunbridge Wells & used to love going down there just to go to Ape - great little store, the staff obviously spent a lot of time writing up their own reviews & had a great selection of all sorts of music. Been a while since I was down there, but hope they're still going.
