On and off 6 hours .... Waking up for shit and piss stops (IBS) and have 4 young kids who seem to want a dump at earlier and earlier hours in the morning
Mrs has/is breast fed them all so wasn't involved in any night time feeding action and she (with a bit of agg) got em all into a decent feeding pattern pretty early on so they fed at 11pm and slept through the night
Lie ins don't exist anymore with 4 boys there's always action required and they aren't interested in my ailments or sleeping requirements

On a weekend I generally deal with the twins first thing Saturday morning so the Mrs can have a bit of a lie in this allows me to lie in long enough on Sunday morning to watch match of the day in bed.

I've always been an early riser but would have an afternoon nap if I felt tired but now I'm up early with no possibility of a nap.

It's like a time-machine. You go to sleep in the present and wake up in the future.

    Ahem.

Sympathies to those who struggle with sleep , be it through young kids or other stuff , does anyone have any good tips for getting a good nights kip , do the hot choccies / hot drinks work before bedtime?

A decent mattress and bed. Get the best and biggest you can afford. You spend 1/3rd of your life in it so you're better off being comfortable in it. No TV or other distractions (within reason :-)) in the bedroom, just make it a room for sleeping in.

I've always been a light sleeper but now I seem to wake up early and can't get back to sleep. Maybe that's a sign of getting older. :-) 6 hours if I'm lucky nowadays.

Do you perhaps have too much natural light coming into your bedroom in the morning? We installed external blinds last year and it definitely helps, and keeps the room cooler too, which also helps, if you don't have aircon

Sometimes I might get only 20 minutes. Other times I am completely out of it for 14 hours.
    Sometimes I have 8 days in a week, sometimes I have 6.
    Part of working night shifts.

When I was at school it would be between 2-4 hours and then lie in until I left for charlton on the saturday.
Thats probably why I am working night shifts..

What on earth did you do during your school years that meant you got by on 2-4 hours sleep?

    Anyway for me it's:
    Weekdays - about 6 hours
Weekends - as much as i can get

My favourite trick is falling asleep downstairs while watching the telly and waking up in the small hours. I then get into bed but don't drop off for ages and find myself really deeply asleep when the alarm goes off so feel totally knackered.

Not sure on makes, it's horses for courses really pricewise. Try the Bedpost in Eltham/Crayford or a good bed specialist, we got ours there and they are very helpful, and be prepared to take your shoes off and get on the beds it's the only way to test them out properly.

We paid a lot for our mattress, it's superking size and guaranteed for 10 years, which is the maximum life recommended. Turn it every month, and bigger the better especially if you have a partner who moves around a lot.

Also as Prague says, light is a big factor. I like to wake up to natural light so thin curtains suit us, but some people prefer darker/thicker curtains.
